Velier Chelo Clairin Vieux Sajous - Second Release 2017
Sipped neat at cask strength, this drinks like a clairin that spent four years in a barrel and picked up polish without losing its roots. Cedar and cut grass on the nose, then a fresh hit of sugarcane, honey and light glue. The palate turns floral and spicy with black pepper, vanilla and burnt sugar over a creamy body. Several tasters place it between a good agricole and a Hampden.

Aged clairin: floral, spicy, agricole-meets-Hampden Widely liked as a well-made aged clairin — floral, spicy and creamy with well-integrated heat. A few miss the raw sugarcane punch of the unaged Sajous.

Nosing reveals a heart of cedar wood and sugarcane. It’s camphoraceous and cool followed by freshly cut grass, resin and lots of herbs and flowers. There’s balsamic and a bit of honey. Sparse fruits complete the profile with cherry coke notes as well as dried fruits and lemon zest. Less tannic than expected on the palate. Cherry coke and lemon zest with a touch of rhubarb transforming into burnt sugar and cask notes. It’s hot with peppers, yet cool with camphor and very light touches of anise. Ends in green tea and flowers. Very vegetal finish with wood, green tea, rhubarb and camphor.

This is a very good Clairin and it will probably devides the waters because it's a bit different from the other releases. I like it a lot actually. The nose is light yet fresh with grass, floral, glue and vanilla as well as some dried fruit. This rum needs to rest before it surrenders all the flavours. The palate is sweet, warm and dry with dried fruit, spices, wood, grass and lovely floral notes. The finish is fresh and medium long with wood, vanilla, dried fruit and lovely floral notes. Should have bought a few bottles when I had the opportunity.

VSGBNose: not a classic Clarin, the oloroso cask has mellowed it considerably. Fruity it is, apple and honeydew melon with a little vinegar. In addition something vegatibles, maybe artichoke, green with something, like chamomile. Palate: hui, seems very sweet, sherry sweet, so quite full-bodied. Cherry, plum and dried, sulfured apricot. On the palate, the sherry fizz - as so often, or almost always - clearly drowns out the actual rum. If you like that, it is quite tasty, but for me always too monotonous and interchangeable. So also here.
Review by Serge
I have this bottle now circa 3-4 months open and I like it now better than at the beginning. For me, the Oloroso was the top and this one the flop, but I'm warming up more and more to this drop. From the nose to the nose, the palate to the finish, I like it very much with different moments that are sometimes closer and sometimes further from the unaged Sajous.

The smell reminds me strongly of an Agricole that has at least 12 years under its belt. So I was very pleasantly surprised by the smell. A lot of vanilla. The taste is then very roasty with fresh tones and again a lot of beautiful natural vanilla at the end. Really great for such a young distillate.
Review by Jakob
Overall, the rum seems somewhat closed, the fruity freshness of younger Clairins has already evaporated quite strongly by the storage - but the rum shows itself somewhat more dominant on the spicy side. Perhaps with even longer storage time would come up again a little more tension, so the rum but the concise freshness was taken, without the storage has already really struck positively. Does not pick me up so completely.

02-03-2024 Tasted at Whiskymessen.dk Eight rum was first time I tasted another Haiti rum than Barbancourt. This took me totally by surprise. This was so young, fresh and easy to drink. And tasted amazing. The first of many new Haiti rums in 2024

Very nice delicious Clairin! I really enjoy this series of aged clairins! I would always prefer these aged to the unaged ones! Here you can taste all the lovely clairin notes, fruits and also woody roasted notes which comes from the barrel!

Review by Benoit Mahe
I don't remember much about the first batch, but this one's a success: the clairin is clearly present, but with lovely notes of aged rum. Intensity, texture, sweetness, freshness.
Review by Leo Krüper
Even better than the 1st version. Nice ester and glue notes. Great, complex flavor that is right in the middle between good Agricole and Hampden.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Barrel and spices dominate. For me, the whole Sajous DNA is lost here :( still quite tasty but somehow I do not warm up to it and is for me rather close to a normal good Agricole than to a Clairin sajous.🤷🏼♂️

Tout aussi réussi que le 1st release mais pas tout à fait similaire. Ici le citron ainsi que la canne à sucre ont une belle place au nez et en bouche.
Review by Christoph
Nutty notes in olive water come across a bit strange. In addition, fresh sugar cane juice on wood with a pinch of citrus.
