Caroni devotees will feel right at home here: this 1997 HTR is all rusty machine-shop, tar and rubber, with roasted wood, dark chocolate and burnt sugar underneath. A few tasters catch sour cherry and tropical fruit if they let it breathe, plus a light sweet undertone beneath the dirt. One member likened it to the well-loved Thompson and Bürgermeister bottlings. The one gripe: at 63.8% the alcohol runs a touch hot.

A good '97 Caroni, but nothing outstanding.

8,8:On the nose, the first impression we get is vegetal and spicy with baking spices and anise, slightly metallic.The wood is roasted with caramel, some fruits pop up like sour cherry, lemon and rubber from industrial notes. On aeration, the rum is dirty, furry, tar arises and a lot of roasted notes like chocolate, nuts, coffee and some confectionery, the molasses is dark with black tea and musty. If we wait long, we notice tropical fruits. 8,9:On the palate, the attack is slightly sweet, mineral with roasted, smoky wood notes like burnt sugar, pastry, dark chocolate and later butterscotch, fruity with berries, dried fruits, tropical, when the rum is really oxidized, from dirty industrial notes, rubber and tar are present, as the molasses is dark with black tea and herbaceous...very round and tasty. If we are patient, tropical fruits and tannins might be detected. 8,6:The finish is long, less round, dry&tannic, smoky and roasted, furry, mineral and minty, dirty, industrial, less fruity...

Top 97 Caronis often have something like cake/baking mix, butterscotch/fudge alongside the dirty notes on the nose...and the Spirits Shop delivers really well here! On the palate, there's plenty of workshop, toasted and burnt sugar. A really good bottling that (almost) comes close to the Thompson Krake or the Mayor!

A really great 97 Caroni with an eternally long finish. I'm glad to have got hold of a bottle of this. I would like to have another one. I don't have that many comparisons yet, but this one is on the top shelf for me.

My first Caroni. From the smell alone, I would have guessed whisky first; intense cask notes, plus vanilla, rubber, and anise. On the palate, tar, dark chocolate, and a mineral taste come through. Medium finish, but very alcohol-heavy – lingers for a long time.

As expected, the opening is intense with the typical dirty, smoky rubber notes. There is still some vanilla, but I miss the fruity notes. Taste is ok, roasty and tarry, slightly sweet and again no fruitiness. The finish is long but too alcoholic, unfortunately. But still a good drop.

Nose: You can immediately notice the Caroni DNA. Alternating rusty and fruity powerful notes come through on the nose. Taste: The notes from the nose are clearly reflected on the tongue. Delicious! However, the alcohol could be better integrated.

Yum! Those little notes of camphor, a beautiful integration of the alcohol, fruits, a very nice balance, that mechanical grease side which takes us away from the usual tar notes, I loved it!
