Saint James Rhum Ambré 47 1970
Acetone-laced vanilla caramel popcorn on the nose that opens into papaya, lime and cherry on the palate — a 1970s Saint James that tasters say barely resembles any modern agricole. Expect red fruit (prunes, cherries), sugarcane, cappuccino and licorice, with real cedar and barrel weight. Several found it "a rum of another era," fascinating and unusually fruity for 47%.
- Fascinating vintage nose
- Cherry and red fruit
- Real barrel character

How does Saint James Rhum Ambré 47 1970 taste?
Aggregated from 17 community reviews.
Old-school agricole, fruity with cherry and cedar Loved by the people who chase old-style agricole — fruity, woody, full of character. The main gripe: the finish thins out and dilutes more than the nose and palate promise.

A rum from another era! For its richness of scents and flavors and very similar si barbancourt of the 50s/60s! Chapeu for this Saint James!

8,8:On the nose, a great first impression with juicy sugarcane, flowery with violet, yellow, dried fruits, cherry and orange peel, roasted wood notes like caramel, roasted nuts, cocoa, spicy, as we see strong barrel impact. On aeration, the cane becomes herbaceous, mineral, earthy, pairing tasty pastry, biscuits, meringue with vanilla and fruits like berries, prunes, banana, hints of custard, yoghurt. 8,4:On the palate, the attack is juicy, syrupy with sugarcane, herbaceous, grassy, fresh with tea, perhaps some root, mineral, fruity with dried fruits like figs, some orange peel, later lime peel, banana, berries, cherries and plums, as the wood is cedar, roasted with cappuccino, gingerbread and meringue, spicy and slightly salty, as some metallic patina, licorice come out, when the rum is well oxidized. 8:The finish is weak, diluted, considering our nose experience, dry&tannic, still long, sour, sweet with caramelized brown sugar, the oak presence is strong, sugarcane, fruit and roasted notes from palate linger on in weaker edition. Unbelievable just how unrecognizable this nose from the 70’s is to any other contemporary SJ I’ve tried. Like acetone-laced vanilla caramel popcorn. Fascinating. Carries over to the palate but what seems acetone on nose develops into papaya, lime, and tropical fruit on palate. I was not expecting this but it’s an amazing expression. So much pop and sizzle in it despite relatively low ABV. One of the most interesting tastings in some time. Incredible how much the flavor profile of a distillery can so radically transform over the decades.

Těžko z vůně poznat agricole původ. Karamelový nádech, třešňové dřevo, vanilka, Amaretto. Chuť už agricole prozradí, ale rozhodně je to něco nestandardního. Zase to má třešňový styl, znatelný sud, vanilka a působí sladce. V závěru ještě vystoupí sušené datle.

Woody nose with intense red fruits, cherry tart, a background cane sweetness with notes of licorice, coffee, cocoa. Tobacco can be sensed on the finish as well. Really good. In the mouth you are enveloped by the red fruits(plums, plums, cherries) a bit unripe, medium woodiness, a bit of tobacco and in the medium finish you can also glimpse some licorice and some spice. In the empty glass a magnificent woody scent. It has the typical Saint James profile, with a few more degrees it would have been more expressive.

Višně v čokoládě, nejdřív lehká citrusová nakyslost a pak nasládlost a výrazné kořeněné aroma
