Velier Caroni 6th Employees United HTR 1996
Tar, burnt rubber and wet asphalt hit first, then licorice, menthol and a heap of spice and wood underneath. This is a slightly less "dirty" Caroni than the classic — a few tasters note more oak and herbal, gin-like juniper notes and only a touch of tropical fruit and sweetness. At 66.6% it's a heavy, oily beast that runs hot but stays balanced.

How does Velier Caroni 6th Employees United HTR 1996 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Woody, spicy Caroni, less dirty than usual Most owners rate it high and call it a well-balanced 1996 Caroni — wood-forward and spicy rather than filthy. If you want the tar-bomb version, other bottlings dig dirtier.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Also has the typical nuance of tropical fruit notes for the sixth Employees-Release of the Caroni-Employees series, reminiscent of mango and kiwi. The United-Blend appears a bit more roasted, the profile is intense, the Caroni-HTR style remains unmistakable. High level, despite a high rating but no longer a 96 top class.

Very herbal note with gin associations. On the palate, the gin continues. Very special bottling.

Unfortunately, not my cup of tea. Much juniper, wood and bitterness.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

A special release from Velier, however its probably not their best Caroni. In saying that, its high praise indeed as it's still a full blown tropical aged 25 year old beast from THAT now closed distillery! You can tell its DNA, ashpelt and rubber, and there is a nice sweetness to it as well. Lots of wood which is probaly why I am getting a slight bitter note? Spicy.
Review by Mirco
Classic 1996 Caroni with dark, oily notes of tar, burnt rubber and wet asphalt. Behind that develop dried fruits, some citrus zest and bitter herbs. Powerful, deep and wonderfully dirty, a prime example of the vintage.

This was the final one of the batch and was getting a bit tipsy after this one. To be honest we went back and had seconds, so I was lucky I had a driver to bring me home. The nose is full os roasted oak with tar, rubber and fruit coming in second. Caramel and light vanilla are trailing along. The palate is also kind of heavy on roasted oak with tar and rubber with fruit closely behind. Caramel and a light touch of vanilla finishes off the palate. The finish is long with roasted wood, rubber and mango with a touch of vanilla.

Beautiful nose, very balanced, intense wood maturity and spice, some coconut gives a Spanish impact. Beautiful, fat caramel notes. Then very, very woody in the mouth. Mega spicy (juniper, maggi, licorice) and bitter. Long finish. You have to like the brute load of wood and spices. I personally like it a lot. The highlight is certainly the nose.

A very well balanced 1996 between sweetness and typical Caroni notes. Probably the best from Employees 6th release 👌
Review by Beach-and-Rum 🏖️🌴
Rather atypical Caroni with few dirty notes. Fruit and sweetness are hardly present. Instead, more spices, wood and herbal notes. Compared to many other Caronis from Velier, I only like it moderately.
Review by Gunnar Böhme "Bauerngaumen" 🤓
On the nose, more artificial and inconspicuous than the other two in the series, but on the palate, the rum convinces me more. It reminds me here because of the taste of a spicy (red) needle extract strangely reminiscent of the recently released WP of RA - and I liked it very much against the current. In short: The palate pulls out the weakness of the nose again and therefore the rum gets from me just like the other two of the series 90 points.

First time ever I’ve smelled and tasted Pine in a rum! Very interesting! Small sips recommended! 😉

Alcohol not quite optimally integrated. Spicy and dirty, a bit juniper. Exciting and thrilling with lots of character
Review by Michal S
Compared to other Caroni employees of the 6th series, somewhat weaker. The nose even after an hour in the glass is relatively unremarkable, the taste makes up for it, lots of licorice and menthol, baked notes. Great sample for trying, not a bottle for drinking.

Vintage 1996. I rate it 9.0 out of 10, belongs to the absolute top among more than 1,300 rums I've ever scored.
Review by Florian Perolini
Superbly spicy, tangy and candied fruit, wood, dirty caroni side but not too much. Perfect balance.
Review by Cédric Meyers
It's confusing, I start to wonder if the sample I got is really a Caroni. On the nose I have no typical markers. I find them a bit on the palate but it's light. On the other hand, you can clearly feel the 66 watts passing.
Review by Arnaud Faverjon
Nice profile, more herbal and medicinal than others, not too dirty, a nice step aside in the Caroni universe.
Review by Julien Frn
Notes of: anise/cinnamon/peppery/volcanic stone/licorice/hydrocarbon/menthol/rubber/leather/toffee/light wood/... And quite rich. Beautiful opulence, a nice heavy 26-year-old. Not the best but still very pleasant.
Review by Alex1981
Solid heavy 1996 Caroni that ticks all the boxes. Balance of heavy industrial notes, wood and slight fruits/sweetness. Some strange bitterness/herbal(?) notes that keep it from a higher score.

02-03-2024 Tasted at Whiskymessen.dk Seventh rum was another Caroni. This one could not quite keep up with Dirty Harry. Not saying it’s bad at all. Nose not that different between the two of them. But not tha same taste. Slight more wood in this one and less tar.

Quite gourmand, clean TDL.

Probably the most expensive sample I've ever had. Small one for 2000,- sweet good
