Velier Caroni 6th Employees United HTR 1996

Tar, burnt rubber and wet asphalt hit first, then licorice, menthol and a heap of spice and wood underneath. This is a slightly less "dirty" Caroni than the classic — a few tasters note more oak and herbal, gin-like juniper notes and only a touch of tropical fruit and sweetness. At 66.6% it's a heavy, oily beast that runs hot but stays balanced.

This was the final one of the batch and was getting a bit tipsy after this one. To be honest we went back and had seconds, so I was lucky I had a driver to bring me home. The nose is full os roasted oak with tar, rubber and fruit coming in second. Caramel and light vanilla are trailing along. The palate is also kind of heavy on roasted oak with tar and rubber with fruit closely behind. Caramel and a light touch of vanilla finishes off the palate. The finish is long with roasted wood, rubber and mango with a touch of vanilla.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

On the nose, more artificial and inconspicuous than the other two in the series, but on the palate, the rum convinces me more. It reminds me here because of the taste of a spicy (red) needle extract strangely reminiscent of the recently released WP of RA - and I liked it very much against the current. In short: The palate pulls out the weakness of the nose again and therefore the rum gets from me just like the other two of the series 90 points.

Beautiful nose, very balanced, intense wood maturity and spice, some coconut gives a Spanish impact. Beautiful, fat caramel notes. Then very, very woody in the mouth. Mega spicy (juniper, maggi, licorice) and bitter. Long finish. You have to like the brute load of wood and spices. I personally like it a lot. The highlight is certainly the nose.

A special release from Velier, however its probably not their best Caroni. In saying that, its high praise indeed as it's still a full blown tropical aged 25 year old beast from THAT now closed distillery! You can tell its DNA, ashpelt and rubber, and there is a nice sweetness to it as well. Lots of wood which is probaly why I am getting a slight bitter note? Spicy.

02-03-2024 Tasted at Whiskymessen.dk Seventh rum was another Caroni. This one could not quite keep up with Dirty Harry. Not saying it’s bad at all. Nose not that different between the two of them. But not tha same taste. Slight more wood in this one and less tar.

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
