Velier Caroni 6th Employees Ricky “Dirty Harry” Seeharack HTR 1996
Pour this neat and give it fifteen minutes in the glass — that's when the tar, rubber and dark caramel really open up. It's a classic dirty 1996 Caroni: heavy oak, roasted notes, and ripe mango or baked banana hiding underneath. Several tasters rank it as their favorite of the 6th Release, calling it more balanced than its Sonny Black sibling. Not much fruit up front, though.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Pleasant that even here the long tropical aging does not turn into overly harsh bitterness. The bitter notes are present but nicely balanced with the very pronounced tropical fruits (mango, kiwi), tar, metal, caramel, wood, and spice notes. After repeated tastings, it clearly ranks ahead of the sister release honoring Sonny Black for me, because in my opinion it offers a much more balanced overall picture. One of my subjective favorites from 1996, because with its great tropical fruit aroma on the palate without noticeable flaws, it achieves an absolute unique selling point.

Authentic Caroni with an extremely dense structure. Powerful tar and rubber aromas dominate, accompanied by dark caramel and a hint of tropical fruit. On the palate, the rum remains raw and powerful, with smoky spice and deep spicy notes. Despite 66%, surprisingly focused, showing classic Caroni DNA with great precision and intensity.

For me, the best of the 6th Release! Blind, I would probably have guessed a 2000s rum, since there are quite a few dirty Caroni notes present. But this complexity is just amazing!

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

Almost zero fruit to be found here but neat smoke, tar and dark caramel. Nice thing but I'm still not a fan of smoky caronis for now.... At the very end, some baked banana actually comes through. Wicked!
Review by Joachim Guger
The color, again a dream.Dense, full, balanced Caroni nose. Varnish, charred oak, tar and rubber. Compared to the Sonny Liston, um Black, fruitier and a bit fresher. In the mouth now warmer, more balanced and much more tar and rubber.Long finish, in the pan warmed condom.😃The nose I like the Sonny clearly better, but this is in the mouth a madness.

A real Caroni cracker. Beautiful 1996 representative. Vanilla-caramel-wood ripeness in a harmonious foreground in front of tar, rubber and mango. Very very nice. Really great 1996 Caroni. Insanely delicious. I think I like it almost better than the Last.

Great nose! Intense yet balanced on the palate.
Review by Kevin Sorensen 🇩🇰
Another great Caroni. The nose is intense with roasted wood, rubber and tar trailed by fruits and caramel with a dash of medicinal notes to it. The palate is also intense with smoky wood, rubber and tar with fruit, caramel and vanilla trailing. In the back i can find chocolate and leather. The finish is long and has roasted oak, rubber and dried fruit to it with a light medicinal note. This one also got really good after resting for more than 15 minutes.

In the battle for the crown were the ever-popular Caroni 21, the Last, and the Dirty Harry. According to my personal feelings and preferences, my ranking would be: 1. Dirty Harry 2. Last 3. Caroni 21 All three absolute knockouts, no question. On another day, it could of course look different again. But here, it’s really just about nuances.

Successful bottling.

Typical profile from 1996 Caroni vintage and quite close to others like United, Toolsie, Manmohan. However, probably a little less balanced and slightly dryer. Still a very good rum though. But no surprise here, that's a Caroni 😊

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang & Jakob, 2023-07-27 Part 3: A clear improvement compared to the Caroni 21, even if the 0.2 points don't look like it. Less fruity on the palate, but spicier, rustier and even more complex.
Review by DaveLamb
When first opened, performed slightly better than "Sonny Black" and "Employees United", more balanced and with a little more complete finish, but when left in the glass for a while, these three performed almost equally. dirty enough(rubber、tar…), but the fruity and spices flavor is decreasing after oxidation, instead of getting clearer with standing. woody is somewhat overwhelming. taste is obviously not as good as the nosing. lacking some elements.
Review by Beach-and-Rum 🏖️🌴
An excellent Caroni with a special fruitiness. The typical workshop notes are also present. In the background, I taste some caramel. I really like this bottling.
Review by Djehey
Yet another monument. Same year, almost the same strength and a noticeably similar profile. I would say this one is less about fruit and more about dark aromas. In the end, I was surprised by the fruity character of these profiles. It is not comparable, for example, to Caroni Navy where you first feel the notes of a mechanical workshop.

Tried it at Bar Lamp. Very nice Caroni, high degree of complexity, not very strong on the fruity side. Not my absolute favorite, but a gorgeous rum nonetheless. Update: 03.06.2026: Ein toller Vertreter der Employees, trotz 25 tropischen Jahren schön ausbalanciert und frisch. Hervorragend!

A really great representative of its kind. Just the right mix of Caroni dirt and a pleasant sweetness. Great bottling.
Review by JFehr
On the nose toffee. Dried fruits and slight bitterness.
Review by ArminK
The first sip was again too fast. Everything very sharp. After 10 minutes it comes top. The aromas are there: Caroni.... + caramel and tropical fruits. On the palate a slight sweetness with vanilla licorice and a bit nutty.

100 ml bottle. The best Caroni I know. If you have to explain to people unfamiliar with the distillery about Caroni's profile, this bottle is a perfect showcase. I'm not a big Caroni fan and it doesn't excite me too much, and I've also drunk some less good ones. This is a very heavy work of art. Dirty. With ripe and orange fruits. Banana. Lots of tar. Very tasty. Excellent.
Review by Michal S
Very nice Caroni, from the comparison of the 6th series employees for me just a bit in second place. Definitely recommend letting it develop in the glass so that the roasted notes, caramel, and wood come out. On the palate, asphalt and licorice add, overall quite a rich experience.

Last drops after Whisky Live Warsaw. Beautiful Caroni, a good one by Velier's standards. It display a nice harmony between tar, wood, tropical fruits and burnt sugar. Not one of the dirtiest Caroni, but still dirty. Quite fruity as well.
Review by Rumclub Latvia
Big. Fat boy. Concentrated and syrup. On taste there is interesting mix between orange, orange peal, tobacco leaves and some smoke. Very good rum, sip by sip becomes in symphony in your mouth.

02-03-2024 Tasted at Whiskymessen.dk Sixth rum was this amazing Caroni. We found it tucked away in a corner, but managed to get a sample. This was to be the best rum of the day. Caroni as I like it. Caroni is like women. Gets better with age. Very powerful nose. Wood and tar. Tast followed nicely the nose. Nice to have a sample on the shelf 🥃
