For seasoned enthusiasts of Jamaican funk: a young yet surprisingly mature 60% Hampden that rewards attention with grilled pineapple, candied fruits, pear, olive, smoke and vanilla. Dry, unsweetened and intensely flavorful, often compared favorably to other HLCF bottlings. Many RumX members praise its balance, long finish and how well the high ABV is integrated, though some note the price and youthful edges.

How does Velier Hampden Elliott Erwitt HLCF 2016 taste?

Aggregated from 79 community reviews.

Intense young Hampden funk bomb For seasoned enthusiasts of Jamaican funk: a young yet surprisingly mature 60% Hampden that rewards attention with grilled pineapple, candied fruits, pear, olive, smoke and vanilla. Dry, unsweetened and intensely flavorful, often compared favorably to other HLCF bottlings. Many RumX members praise its balance, long finish and how well the high ABV is integrated, though some note the price and youthful edges.

Perfect for

Fans of high-ester Jamaican funk who enjoy cask-strength, unsweetened rums with grilled pineapple, candied fruits, olive and smoky notes and want a characterful modern HLCF reference.

Less suitable for

Beginners, those sensitive to high ABV, or value-focused buyers who may find a 5-year 60% Hampden too intense, youthful and expensive for casual sipping.

Stands out extremely positively in a direct comparison of the two2016 Hampdens, which were released under the aegis of Velier. Clearly more harmonious and with far better integration of the alcohol.

Very tasty! Great nose, in the first moment when you take a sip it has briefly a somehow unpleasant mouthfeel. However, this fades very quickly, then spreads a great flavor palette in the mouth! The rum develops from rather acidic ester notes to a sweetish pear with a slight eucalyptus note.

With a drop or two of water, this rum works wonderfully. It is harmonious but also complex. Rather on the spicy side and less funk. It seems older than the 5 years. The rum still has a very good PLV.

Cross-tasting with RX27 & RX11980 I have to raise my initial rating significantly. In direct comparison, better than the new Hampden HLCF Classic 2017, but still a corner behind the Velier HLCF 2010

somehow seems to have more than just 5 years under its belt. Very round on the nose, and there are many nuances to discover: fermented and candied fruit, pear, smoked bacon, olive, butter croissant. Smoky on the palate, mirabelle plums, pear, candied fruit and brine.

What I like about this rum is how well the ABV has been integrated. A very well balanced rum indeed. The price is stiil up among the others though. The nose is fruity with ester, waxes, honey, chocolate and vanilla. The palate is warm, complex and extremely well balanced with fruits, honey, sugarcane, chocolate and vanilla as well as a nice smoky touch. The finish is long and warm with pineapple, vanilla and again that lovely smoky note.

So, now I'm finally going to try it. Thanks SaibotZtar for the split 👌 The rum is relatively young. It clearly stands out from the HLCF Classic in terms of quality ... but on the other hand only so much that it's easy to understand why it was packaged in a bottle with a cool photo on it. That makes it look even better 🤣 Conclusion: Good, but overpriced. My sweet spot here would be 3-5 more tropical years, I think. I like the nose much better and more mature than the palate.

An amazing Hampden! Found it at my favorite bar in Copenhagen. The first thing I find that hits the nose is banana and chocolate. I got notes of fresh fruits, cocoa, citrus and vanilla. Very interesting Jamaican rum to me
