Velier MHOBA FAQ Plastic 2017
"Hampden meets Agricole," as one member puts it, and that's the hook — a South African pot-still cane-juice rum that drinks like a Jamaican funk bomb crossed with something grassy and wild. Overripe banana, glue and varnish lead, with sour yoghurt, raspberry and roasted wood underneath. At 64.3% the alcohol lands surprisingly well-integrated, and a few drops of water pull out even more fruit. Only four years old but tastes far more mature.

How does Velier MHOBA FAQ Plastic 2017 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Wild, funky cane-juice rum with yoghurt and glue The runaway favorite Mhoba for most tasters — funky, fruity and complex, with alcohol that sits far calmer than the proof suggests. If you want a long finish, this one runs a touch short.

Very tasty but overall too intense in my mouth and very woody for its young age
Review by Gunnar Böhme "Bauerngaumen" 🤓
Rating confirmed from 5 months ago: 88 points. In the nose raspberry jam (and nicotine?). Hard to distinguish from a Clairin. On the palate, the South African seems round, deep and powerful, that's how it should be. Fine stuff, awesome shit - keep it up, Mhoba! 👏

24.02.2024 Great tasting event at Whisky Watcher with food and lots of bottles. Retasting and I still like it a lot. --------------------- After resting 15+ minutes this rum starts to release a lot of flavours in the glass. In order to release even more I added a few drops of water. A very nice cooperation with Velier and a very good final result. Fruity with smoky wood, varnish and clear Agricole notes. There is a nice hint of chocolate, anise and floral notes as well. Getting the bottle is almost impossible and the price went through the roof. If you get the chance give it a go.

Second tasting: very good Jamaica Funk from Africa ( 1)Unusual nose, even for Mhoba: very fruity, fermented at the same time and many other flavors in a previously unknown combination to me... I like excellent. The palate can unfortunately not quite keep up and the aftertaste is relatively short only the fermented fruit and the butter note remain very long.Great new experience and for the output price top price performance! Meanwhile, unfortunately, much too expensive, if you can get at all.

Hampden from Martinique. Tremendous complexity after 4 years and super integrated alcohol. Overripe fruit with undertones of agricole. Sour yogurt. Dry salted bacon on the finish.
Review by Giorgio Garotti
Compared to the habitation velier on the palate it is more complex and has an excellent richness of flavors! It also gives you a very pleasant very fruity and sweet finish! Mhoba is surprising me more and more!
Review by Jarek
So far my favorite from Mhoba, next to the Mhoba Antipodes (which, however, shows fewer rough edges). Addendum "Small" Mhoba Cross-Tasting 2025: Still one of the better Mhobas. Less spectacular than an Ingwe, more in the direction of Antipodes, but more complex. I find the cherry note in particular very tasty.
Review by DosenZorn
Tasted as a 5cl sample, at first a smell of marzipan and plastic when poured, this changes after some time to fermented fruits, especially banana, slightly smoky and metallic and it lives up to its name on the nose. A good portion of plastic when freshly poured. On the palate, chocolate, barrel and an interesting sweetness, which is then overlaid by slightly bitter wood and spices in the finish. It was my first Mhoba and I like it very much.
Review by Mirco
Mhoba has potential to release great stuff in the future. The current bottlings point in a positive direction. This bottling is still a bit too wild for me. Raspberry yogurt as described by my predecessors fits quite well. Nice ester notes.
Review by LukaŽiga
8,6:On the nose, fermented, overripe tropical fruits like banana, dairy like yoghurt, cream, medicinal with esters, polish, slightly synthetic, roasted wood notes like pastry, biscuits, smoky, spicy with allspice, flowery sugarcane, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, green, yellow, citrus and red fruits arise, apple is baked, rum becomes slightly pungent, dirty, rubber joins, sugarcane is vegetal, caramel, roasted nuts and maple are obvious. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is intense, medicinal with esters, solvents, slightly plastic, sugarcane honey, sweet, flowery, vegetal(briny olive), dark with licorice and fruits are fermented, overripe with citrus, tropical, yellow fruits, red like raspberry, berries. The wood is toasted with chocolate, pastry, buttery, smoky, spicy with allspice, dry. 8,6:The finish is long, dry&tannic, medicinal with solvents, rubber, slightly metallic, fruity with overripe tropical, red fruits, berries, sugarcane is vegetal, floral, herbaceous and wood roasted, oily, smoky, spicy, salty. Edit:12.6.26

A little too much ester for my taste, lots of watts, otherwise well balanced.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A striking Mhoba that doesn't do things halfway. The nose is lively, fruity, very ripe and slightly acidic, with beautiful medicinal notes on the esters, glue, and polish. Also found are fermentative notes on cream, butter, and yogurt. In this profile, sugarcane, spices, and floral notes are a bit more in the background. The palate is very powerful on fruits (ripe banana, citrus), spices (vanilla, chili), and medicinal notes (solvents, esters, fermentation). Sugarcane, caramel, butter, and toast lie in ambush to slash the palate. The alcohol slightly unbalances the overall profile. A robust rum, dry but also thick and creamy. The finish falters here compared to the rest of the profile. While the spicy (chili), empyreumatic (smoke), and meaty (bacon) archetype is seductive, the length is far too short to leave a strong impression. A finish below expectations despite some fruity and shimmering sugarcane notes. A very good rum overall that will satisfy fans of the genre but lacks length at the end to reach the top.

Tasted together with the Habitation Velier and the Glass Cask. The FAQ comes across much more brutal than the Velier, with a more pronounced apple cider vinegar note. The Glass Cask is even a bit more intense here than the FAQ. After some time, the FAQ develops a nice anise cookie note. On the palate, the Velier is a bit more floral than the two contenders, who both bring a nice, long spicy-sweet finish. My favorite of the three remains the Habitation Velier. It’s not as intense, but more balanced/coherent.
Review by Stylo
Gotta say it..for me, it’s weirdly good..on the nose I sense banana flavored yogurt, then a combination of metallic and smoky note..the palate is even more funky, with a unorthodox mix of oranges, chocolate and a butter-y and peppery back palate! The finish is pretty dry, although kinda short. First Mhoba for me..and really makes me crave for tasting more of this distillery!
Review by Alexander Rasch
My first Mhoba and I have to say it is quite special. Especially the nose with very intense notes, which remind somewhat of expired yogurt with lots of acidity, is a matter of taste. On the palate an absolute blast. Super sweet and hardly any acidity. Like a toffee cookie. Very successful and a lot of fun.
Review by Santo
The nose is crazy! With esters of sugar cane and fermented vanilla yogurt. The palate is slightly woody, complex, creamy and toasted. The alcohol is super well integrated considering its high strength and young age. A somewhat special Mhoba!
Review by DomM
Interesting one! Very nice raspberry yogurt on the nose.
Review by Jakob
Mhoba extreme - not my favorite from South Africa, but a very exceptional taste experience. The young age of the rum is noticeable, yet fresh green aromas and a nice sugar cane sweetness also pave their way. Interesting.
Review by Oliver
Hampden meets Agricole. Super exciting!
Review by Mentalo
Raspberry, yogurt, ester power, fermented fruits. Alcohol is well integrated. Slightly too much bitterness on the finish. Mhoba remains an exciting distillery. For me, the FAQ doesn't reach the Velier Antipodes Collection bottling.
Review by Johannes
A very special rum, but I somehow like it! Beautiful interplay of lacquer, a green fruit basket, and esters.
Review by Christian Rudt
Comes in comparison to the French Cask altogether a little more hearty, with more spice. Otherwise dominate here overripe, fermented fruit. Also ne great bottling but I says the French Cask more to.
Review by tojo
An interesting rum. On the nose red fruits (grape, red wine), fermented fruits, subtle ester notes and young wood. On the palate spicier, a pleasant sweetness, roasted aromas and fruit. Finish very mild, light spice and fruit.
Review by Gyuli
Medium ester with a solid texture. Quite woody. This is my first time trying South African rum, and it has a similar nuance to Savanna rum. The taste is varied yet not vague, with a distinct character. Intense but not spicy considering the strength, with tropical fruit notes. Dry and delicious. The price is a bit high, so I'm satisfied with one experience. I'd like to try other Mhoba rums!

The fifth tasting of the night at Whisky Watcher the 24th of February 2024, with nice company. The surprise of the evening! I had not yet had the luck to try this. Wow, it has a plastic-like estery nose at first, going into a fruity nose. Notes of dried fruits, grass and some glue-like finish
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Delicious and very similar to the velier mhoba 2017. However, a bit more intense and less complex.
Review by Galli33
First sample from Laďa🥃😎 Fruity and funky with plenty of character. Overripe fruits, banana and esters meet caramel, dark chocolate and cedar wood. Full-bodied and intense, with a dry, roasted finish. Complex, slightly wild and very enjoyable! 🥃💪🏻
Review by Jussi Piirainen
On the nose: Nail polish notes after opening the bottle, but it then evolves to nice overripe/fermented and fruity palate with also yogurt notes, raspberry notes, sugarcane notes and little bit of woody notes. Taste: Overripe notes, spicy notes, slightly buttery mouthfeel, light citrus notes and light sugarcane notes. Little bit of cocoa and chocolate notes. Agricole notes appear little bit more on the palate after the rum has been sitting in the glass. Interesting complexity and good integration of alcohol. Finish: Spicy, woody, roasted notes, light cocoa notes. Light sugarcane notes. Light salty notes. Interesting finish that is rather long. I liked this rum a lot and it had interesting notes and the overall palate was somewhat hard to describe.
Review by Nils123
Not particularly complex, but still quite good. The alcohol is super integrated. Becomes butterier with water.
Review by DaveLamb
a little young? no no, a little rough and scratchy, not only the aging issue.
Review by Torsten Kunkel
The first impression - Sour. After a good 20 minutes, the sour impression has given way and ripe fruit, chocolate and spice emerge. The taste confirms the first impressions. Who has time will like it.
Review by Lukas Jäger
Mhoba is and remains exciting. Feels like every bottling is better and I can hardly wait to test even older bottlings. Insanely fruity, but in contrast to the fruit top dog Jamaica less tropical than "continental" fruits. A bit of fresh jam on the nose, really exciting. On the palate then more spice, wood and something smoky, but nothing particularly dominant, but quite harmonious. In the finish, this impression intensifies and a hint of sugar cane remains. Mhoba you have to try and should continue to keep an eye on!
Review by Richard Krupa
The smell is incredible, but the taste is too much for me
Review by Joe95
For me, the best mhoba to date. Very atypical, out of the ordinary even. The high esters give it a very truffled, earthy quality that my palate has never tasted before. A great success for this rather young rum. Add to this a rather well-integrated alcohol and a good length.
Review by Florent Apl
Thanks to Lada for the sample. I compare it to the Habitation Velier 4yo Mhoba, this one is more fruity, ripe tropical fruits, whereas the other one had more cacao and chocolate. It's very good as expected, I put it at the same level as the HV.
Review by Thunderbird
On the nose a fermented red fruit compote with a slight sweetness...on the palate first a tart sweetness that changes to a pleasant light spiciness. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is then more Agricole with herbs and gentle toasted spice! My second best Mhoba so far... after the Velier, these rums have a future

What an awesome flavour bomb! Complex, unique and super tasty stuff. My absolute favourite Mhoba to date, and I will savour every pour of it. If you can find a bottle for a reasonable price, it's highly recommended!

Mhoba Night Was very curious and full of anticipation. But unfortunately I am a bit disappointed. It's not bad at all, but in my opinion also a bit overrated for the price that is now being asked.
Review by Benoit Mahe
Disappointed, it is very special
Review by Piotr Ignasiak
Compared to the younger editions, the 4 years feels very mature. Wood tames the beast a little bit.
Review by Buddudharma
For me the most successful Mhoba I have tried so far. Lots of body, great classic profile, long finish.
Review by Michal Jurka
My top Mhoba, no contest here so far. On the nose beautifully funky and fruity, just like basket of ripe tropical and contimental fruits, bananas, papaya, canatloupe, sweet citruses, apricots, raspberries, I also get a hint of red fruit after the red wine cask. But there are also vanilla, buttery, creamy notes and chemical ones, glue. The palate seems to me more chemical and woody, the fruity side of spectrum comes later. Longer finish. After washing it down with water a bit I get light floral notes in my mouth. 64% is well integrated.
Review by Arthur Moreau
Special. On the nose a mix of yogurt, red fruits and esters, the palate continues on these notes adding wood and a bit of alcohol and especially a "salty" finish. Very special, I don't quite know what to think yet, but it's worth tasting.

What a lovely rum. If all mhoba where like that it would dominate the nerd market for high intensity rum. A really balanced flavour profile of glue apricot and woody spice. I want so much more of the! Please mhoba do this yearly!

After trying a few Mhoba’s this is prob one of the best ones. Quite complex with some very pleasant spicy notes. Quite meaty (not a work I use often with rum) but pleasant
