Velier MHOBA FAQ Plastic 2017
"Hampden meets Agricole," as one member puts it, and that's the hook — a South African pot-still cane-juice rum that drinks like a Jamaican funk bomb crossed with something grassy and wild. Overripe banana, glue and varnish lead, with sour yoghurt, raspberry and roasted wood underneath. At 64.3% the alcohol lands surprisingly well-integrated, and a few drops of water pull out even more fruit. Only four years old but tastes far more mature.

How does Velier MHOBA FAQ Plastic 2017 taste?
Aggregated from 148 community reviews.
Wild, funky cane-juice rum with yoghurt and glue The runaway favorite Mhoba for most tasters — funky, fruity and complex, with alcohol that sits far calmer than the proof suggests. If you want a long finish, this one runs a touch short.

Very tasty but overall too intense in my mouth and very woody for its young age

Rating confirmed from 5 months ago: 88 points. In the nose raspberry jam (and nicotine?). Hard to distinguish from a Clairin. On the palate, the South African seems round, deep and powerful, that's how it should be. Fine stuff, awesome shit - keep it up, Mhoba! 👏

24.02.2024 Great tasting event at Whisky Watcher with food and lots of bottles. Retasting and I still like it a lot. --------------------- After resting 15+ minutes this rum starts to release a lot of flavours in the glass. In order to release even more I added a few drops of water. A very nice cooperation with Velier and a very good final result. Fruity with smoky wood, varnish and clear Agricole notes. There is a nice hint of chocolate, anise and floral notes as well. Getting the bottle is almost impossible and the price went through the roof. If you get the chance give it a go.

Second tasting: very good Jamaica Funk from Africa ( 1)Unusual nose, even for Mhoba: very fruity, fermented at the same time and many other flavors in a previously unknown combination to me... I like excellent. The palate can unfortunately not quite keep up and the aftertaste is relatively short only the fermented fruit and the butter note remain very long.Great new experience and for the output price top price performance! Meanwhile, unfortunately, much too expensive, if you can get at all.

Hampden from Martinique. Tremendous complexity after 4 years and super integrated alcohol. Overripe fruit with undertones of agricole. Sour yogurt. Dry salted bacon on the finish.
Review by Giorgio Garotti
Compared to the habitation velier on the palate it is more complex and has an excellent richness of flavors! It also gives you a very pleasant very fruity and sweet finish! Mhoba is surprising me more and more!

So far my favorite from Mhoba, next to the Mhoba Antipodes (which, however, shows fewer rough edges). Addendum "Small" Mhoba Cross-Tasting 2025: Still one of the better Mhobas. Less spectacular than an Ingwe, more in the direction of Antipodes, but more complex. I find the cherry note in particular very tasty.
Review by DosenZorn
Tasted as a 5cl sample, at first a smell of marzipan and plastic when poured, this changes after some time to fermented fruits, especially banana, slightly smoky and metallic and it lives up to its name on the nose. A good portion of plastic when freshly poured. On the palate, chocolate, barrel and an interesting sweetness, which is then overlaid by slightly bitter wood and spices in the finish. It was my first Mhoba and I like it very much.

A little too much ester for my taste, lots of watts, otherwise well balanced.

Gotta say it..for me, it’s weirdly good..on the nose I sense banana flavored yogurt, then a combination of metallic and smoky note..the palate is even more funky, with a unorthodox mix of oranges, chocolate and a butter-y and peppery back palate! The finish is pretty dry, although kinda short. First Mhoba for me..and really makes me crave for tasting more of this distillery!

What a lovely rum. If all mhoba where like that it would dominate the nerd market for high intensity rum. A really balanced flavour profile of glue apricot and woody spice. I want so much more of the! Please mhoba do this yearly!

After trying a few Mhoba’s this is prob one of the best ones. Quite complex with some very pleasant spicy notes. Quite meaty (not a work I use often with rum) but pleasant
