It's a tropically-aged 1974 Caroni with the classic tar, rubber and bicycle-tube nose, then menthol, dried and tropical fruit, dark chocolate and roasted wood. Several call it surprisingly fresh and fruity for a Caroni.

Thank you for the 2nd opportunity to have this rum in a glass. The tropical Veliers are certainly a touch more delicious, but you still have liquid history in your glass. Great stuff.

An incredibly addictive, full-bodied and complex nose with mechanical workshop, vegetal and even floral notes with citrus and other fruits. Dry herbs and an incredibly fresh side for a Caroni. Vegetable and woody notes provide support. The first taste is full-bodied with quite a bit of alcohol, the mechanical workshop is very present, fresher than usual with vegetal notes. Fruit and pastry notes round off this rum. A perfect balance is achieved. The finish is long, although shorter than for other Caronis. All the aromas are there, in balance, and fade fairly quickly, although some linger for a particularly long time.

Wonderful Caroni from 1974 with great depth and historic character. Despite clear dilution to 46%, it shows complexity; tar, rubber, dried fruits and spices merge harmoniously. The maturation brings multi-layered wood notes without exaggeration. Compared to the Velier brother, a completely different approach, less power but fine nuances. Impressive and absolutely worth enjoying.

Extremely exciting to be able to drink a Caroni from 1974. Got the sample a few months ago and waited for the right moment. Of course, a little more ABV would be good for him, but I think you can get over that with this rarity. Thanks Rik for the sample 🙏🏼

A Caroni distilled in the year of my birth. Expectations are high...A great nose as if from a single mold. Very dirty, very, very awesome varnish!!! Then fruits and nice wood maturity with lots of spices. Enough power in the 1920s Blenders glass as well. It doesn't need time to breathe either.In the mouth it's a bit too weak then. Long, woody finish. 34 years in the tropics are then but long.Pure Caroni magic, the bouquet.😊 The rest is solala.

8,7:On the nose, heavy industrial notes like tar and rubber, bicycle tube, roasted, smoky wood notes like nuts, oaky, mango and citrus fruits, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the molasses is herbaceous, menthol shows up, spiciness, various fruits like passion fruit, pineapple and mandarine. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is heavy, industrial with tar and rubber, sweet with roasted wood notes like caramel, leather, roasted nuts and dark chocolate, spicy with anise, salty, quite fruity with passion fruit, mango and citrus fruits, the molasses is mineral. 8,3The finish is long, dry, very industrial with petrol, rubber, menthol, the molasses is vegetal, the fruits tropical and citrus, as the wood is roasted, sweet with confectionery, dark chocolate, nuts, coffee, spicy and oaky.

Wow! What a highly unusual Caroni! Green apple rings and citrus fruits, as well as mint, dried fruits and the typical Caroni rubber and bicycle inner tube note on the nose. On the palate then very oily, fresh and very elegant and complex. Green fresh sour Granny Smith apple, menthol, some dark chocolate and light Cuban coffee, as well as just the right amount of "Caroni dirt" and smokiness. The 46% are not thin at any point but make the whole extremely drinkable and almost dangerously smooth. I like it very much! Didn't expect that. Easy sipping Caroni with a rather unusual profile.

Hot, the nose smells like shoe polish that grandma has been hiding in the cellar since 1974. My poor brain tells me not to drink this, so it smells like a grand cru. And indeed, it is. Very fruity on the palate, tart, with a fresh menthol finish. Alcohol imperceptible but nicely oily on the palate and a beautiful length. Superb! Tasting notes to be enriched throughout the evening…

Classic Caroni, which despite dilution brings out all the classic markers well and intensely. Rubber, tar, dried as well as tropical fruits, as well as wood, leather and menthol are present in varying degrees.

First tasted blind and didn't get it at first. The nose is really very vanilla-like. I almost guessed it was Foursquare. Very pleasant on the palate. Very restrained thanks to the lower strength. But still a great rum. The aromas are really great despite the low alcohol content.

Tropically matured Caroni like the Velier ones. It was diluted to 46 %, however it still has enough power. Dirty components and tropical notes in the nose. The palate is very similar, with a long finish.

Caroni 1974, you have to take the chance. Short and sweet. I actually really like it with its 46%. Brings a lot of fruit on the palate. The dirty Caroni notes are there but rather on the edge. Thanks Oliver for letting us try this rum at the first Community Meeting alongside many others.

Sample received from RumX :) Very interesting because very accessible for a Caroni with a nice mix of exotic fruits and empyreumatic aromas. Contrary to what the reduction might suggest, the rum is of a beautiful intensity with a nice texture and good length on the palate. You could almost call it elegant!

At first very dominant on wood and petroleum on the nose, but after letting it air for 30 minutes more subtle flowery and spicy notes appeared. The taste is sugary sweet, with again petrol, wood and spices. An unmistakeable top note of fleur d’oranger and geranium that ends in menthol. It punches above its ABV because of the menthol, making it more full-bodied than you would expect.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

What an honor to be able to taste this beautiful rum. Compared to the Velier bottling, you can clearly notice the strong dilution. But nonetheless, an excellent complex Caroni with lots of mint and cask influence.

Very pleasant. Now I understand all the descriptions of rubber, also burnt, oil and dirty. I probably wouldn't have described it like that myself. Draws beautiful oily "window arches" in the glass. Nose fresh menthol but not intrusive, nice accompanying smell. Smoky tire when the temperature on the street slowly goes over 40. Taste refreshing and at the same time heavy. Finish sparkling and holding from heavy oily to fresh mint (After Eight). Very well integrated alcohol. Thanks RX that this was in my premium sample pack! Too bad I will never drink it again in life at that price.

Wonderful Caroni with a fine interplay between alcohol and aromas. Despite or perhaps because of its slightly lower alcohol content, it is wonderful to drink and intense in taste. The nose is wonderfully intense and typical of the 1974 vintage. An absolute must for Caroni lovers.

How good this is, in spite of the reduction. Typica htr powerhouse nose with dirt and rubber, menthol and fruit. On the palate the reduction is really coming through. Wood and tar, rubber and fruit. Ends super nice with roasted aromas and chocolate. Full proof this would have been an all-time great bottle
