Hampden Rum Sponge No. 8 JMH 2001
What surprises people here is how soft it drinks for 55%. This is a 20-year continental-aged Hampden: glue, varnish and funky esters up front, then a wave of ripe pineapple, banana and mango, with vanilla, brown sugar and roasted wood underneath. The funk is dialed back rather than wild. A few tasters found the palate a touch watered-down compared to that gorgeous nose.
- Ripe tropical fruit
- Long finish
- Easy at 55%

How does Hampden Rum Sponge No. 8 JMH 2001 taste?
Aggregated from 34 community reviews.
Soft, fruity 20-year Hampden with restrained funk Beloved for its rich, fruity, funky nose and long finish. Most rate it highly; the recurring catch is a palate some find diluted and a finish that turns metallic for a few.

I like this rum very much

Another great continental ageing Hampden, that confirms this distillery is unbeatable wherever it is aged. Usual notes of ananas, vanilla and pastry on the nose, while drinking the esters are on the spotlight and some spicy notes appear too.

This sample arrive with he previous one and I'd loved a bottle of this one as well. A very good take on Jamaica indeed. The nose is funky with ester and fermentation notes followed by fruits and sweet vanilla. The palate is also funky with ester, tar and varnish followed by fruit and woody vanilla. The finish is long and warm with wood, ester and lovely fruit.

I loved the nose. Funky as hell with a super well integrated alcohol. The mouthfeel is great too but I didn't find it as pleasant as the nose.
Review by Maxence
Very nice nose both elegant and funky at the same time. Palate is very fruity and funky but the finish feels a bit too much metallic and toasted to my liking. Great continental Hampden overall and a good release from Rum Sponge.

3rd Jamaican Rum Sponge that I have tasted. The first 2 were very good. The 3rd one is on the same line. The nose is rich and bewitching. Fruit, fruit, fruit, funky. In the mouth, the alcohol is there, spicy. But the fruit is present: a sweet pineapple, a very ripe banana. Then some wood and pepper at the end of the mouth. This fruit remains very present in mouth after the end of the tasting. It is frankly very pleasant. A candy which stings!

Very nice nose, pineapple, ester and funky.

The idea of the blend I find good. Nose also really fine, but on the palate it is clearly watered down.

A restrained and dry nose, some glue, brown sugar, and tropical fruit. The mouth is fairly restrained as well, with deep oily and complex layers. Wood and some sap with a bit of oil. The finish is short with brown sugar, woody and then brings more tar and a sour note of sour peach at the end. A solid but not exceptional rum.
