What surprises most people is how far the bitterness goes — wet wood, cedar and extremely steeped black tea run from nose to finish. Underneath sit dried figs, prunes, raisins and a heavy tobacco note that lingers forever. A 33-year Port Mourant from Velier's old Demerara era; rich and intense, though the oak and bitter edge don't win everyone over.

A port mourant with mixed continental and tropical aging! The years in barrel are all felt and in tasting it you feel like you are transported to the middle of the woods with hints of damp wood and moss! It has a bit bitter side that I am not crazy about if not it would have deserved a higher face..it still remains a crazy rum for intensity and persistence!

A great rum from the old Demerara era. Opulent dried fruits meet wood and tobacco notes, heavy sweetness in the background, along with subtle spice and wood. Taste-wise archetypal for the 70s Demeraras - and thus proof of what formidable rums were produced and bottled in this decade.

Edit: after direct comparison with the 75 Silver Seal PM, it won by a hair. But in my opinion, it's close behind the 64 Cadenhead. Short trip through the year 1975 with some good things from Jakob's endless treasure chest. Very good rum, but unfortunately loses compared to the Rendsburger. It's rather on the 'herbal' side. Complaining at a high level. Thanks for sharing.

100% dried figs, woody and leather ... Old Velier Demerara rum is the best thing you can taste in the rum world. The rums have been aged in the tropics for several years by mistake and nobody has refilled the barrel. The Andel tax was 90% or more, which is why the taste is especially full and intense. Even though it is an extra expensive product, I recommend to taste a rum from this series at least once in your life.

A very woody nose (cedar) and less complex than the 1971 Silver Seal and 1974 Velier PM. But the dried fruit is there, with yellow fruit and bitter molasses. The first palate is quite sharp, then the wood comes in, oak and cedar wood. Extremely infused and bitter black tea, dried fruit and nuts. The finish is very bitter, but I don't mind it at all. A very fine rum, but it suffers a little from the PM 1974 and Silver Seal 1971 tasted at the same time. Thanks Artur for the sample.

Old Port Mourant with a lot of depth. On the nose wood, licorice, leather and dark dried fruits, plus a bit of wax and a fine spice. On the palate dry and dense with lots of oak, tobacco, spices and a slightly bitter note. Despite the age, it doesn't feel tired but surprisingly present. A classic old PM with plenty of character.

The color is very dark and dense, on the nose it is full-bodied and explosive (you can smell it from a distance) with plums, raisins, lots of matured notes, tea, leather, quince, damp wood, vegetables (olive), burnt sugar, a bit of tobacco and chocolate, it really has a lot of personality. On the palate it is compact and decisive with raisins, intense leather, plums, warm spices, rubber*, Sichuan pepper, tea, anise, light tobacco and some matured notes. The finish is persistent and medium-long with added licorice, anise, damp wood and coffee. Really a great rich and complex rum, but it doesn't quite match my taste. In the empty glass: damp wood, matured notes and raisins. It oscillates between 8.5 and 8.6 but objectively it is at least a 9. Thanks to Olivier *Not having found the rubber scent in other reviews, it is possible it comes from a poorly washed small bottle that previously contained a Caroni.

Not inferior to the Rendsburger 1975 Port Mourant at all. However, here comes a super exciting raspberry spirit (wild raspberry) through which I find super interesting. Spicy, fruity, fresh, complex and extremely round and aromatic. Alcohol perfectly integrated. Vintage Demerara PM as it is written in the book. Thanks Jakob for the opportunity.

A legendary Port Mourant with multiple facets reflecting the quality of the 1970s bottlings. We have a superb nose, dense and complex as desired. An incredible combination of dark fruits (raisin, prune, plum, and black berries) and fresh woody notes, leather, tobacco, coffee, cocoa, and spices (licorice, cinnamon, anise, pepper) offering wild elegance. It's a heavy, very dark profile yet full of freshness, notably herbs, black tea, and wood moisture, but also indulgence on molasses and creamy caramel. A marvel for the nose. It's quite heavy, full-bodied yet hyper harmonious on the palate. The palate receives a very dark and bitter aromatic palette: licorice, anise, cinnamon, damp wood, tobacco, cocoa, coffee, leather, molasses, caramel, and black tea unify under the same banner for a rich spectacle of complexity and emotion. Plum, black berries, and dried fruits (prune and raisin again) add extra indulgence perfectly complementing this profile, both bitter, creamy, rich, and elegant. The alcohol is superbly integrated; you feel the age did masterful work to develop extraordinary aromatic depth. The finish is incredibly long and contains a multitude of aromas: earthy and herbal notes contrast with Demerara sugar, damp oak, leather, cocoa, coffee, and spices. Bitterness is present but balanced by the same dark fruits (raisin, prune, plum, and black berries) bringing a subtle and poignant final touch. An anthology Port Mourant that is a reference to try at least once in your life.

A remarkable rum in terms of balance, especially when you know what to expect from a 1975 Port Mourant. The profile is, of course, heavily oaked and the bitterness is clearly present, yet it never overwhelms the lovely fruity and round notes. In my opinion, this Velier bottling is less atypical but more approachable compared to the Silver Seal I tasted (cask n°2042). A superb tasting experience !

Although considered a sacred monster, I don't appreciate it very much, the nose is very pleasant with predominant notes of dried plum. On the palate extremely woody note which I don't particularly like. Very long finish.

Woody and bitter all the way from the nose to finish. Barrel is quite present. Extremely intense rum! Herbal on nose with plum, cocoa, raisin and cherry notes. It needs time in glass to expose full strength on nose. Complex and intense on palate. Woody and bitter, but rich of herbal notes, plum, dried fruits, tobacco. Nice finish on roasted nuts, earthy, woody and bitter notes with demerara sugar present as well. Nice rum, awaiting to taste its 74 and 72 brothers:)

When I was missing aspects in veliers Port Mourant 1974, i find them here with the 1975. The woody goodness is balanced with loads of black tea, raisins, prune and anise. Strong tobacco finish that lingers forever
