The Calvados finish is rather disturbing to me; overall an exciting profile with fruit, medicinal and woody notes, but with a bit too present alcohol for my taste.

Powerful Grand Arôme profile with distinct ester aromas, fermented fruits, and solvent notes. Joined by citrus zest, herbs, and a slight floral touch. On the palate, intense and dense, the fruitiness remains present and is complemented by spice and fine bitterness. The finish is long, dry, and distinctive, with a clear Savanna signature.

fort dauphin #989: This bottling is something for collectors. Searching for aromas during tasting is extremely arduous. Candied fruits, some fruit yogurt, very light on the palate with a short finish. Despite the low ABV, the alcohol is not well integrated. wild island #985: Good fruity start with some wood and candied light fruits. Fermented fruit in the finish, also pastry and fruit yogurt. Great mouthfeel and a nice medium-long finish don't deceive about the comparatively restrained aroma intensity compared to other great Savannas. Big sips are a lot of fun to enjoy here and less so when looking at the wallet. 84 points wild island #984: Weak start, fermented fruit, clearly more than in Cask 985, but also significantly less fruit and volume on the palate. The finish is also relatively long and the absolute strength, here the cask comes through a bit. 83 points. wild island #987: Similarly weak as 989. A bit woodier and more bitter than the tasting colleagues. Cognac/armagnac in the finish very distinct. The finish is absolutely great and lifts the rum to a whole new level. Might have guessed an Agricole blind here. I like it 83 points madras #496: Hell yeah! Awesome stuff! From the nose to the start, in the finish it gets a bit thin (complaining at a high level). A very good balance between fruit and wood, wonderful mouthfeel. Sure, the comparison to the colleagues is a bit unfair since we have a good Grand Arome here. I love it! 89 Maputo #988: With associations to Cask 987, only much better. Everything more intense and better balanced. Great rum! 87-88

Together with DomM, a few Savanna were tasted today. Many thanks to Johannes for the samples. The biggest disappointments were the RX232 and the RX11264. My personal favorite was the RX9608. The RX11034 and RX11515 just managed to pass the 8-point mark.

The Calvados cask influence is clearly recognizable without being too dominant, but also makes the whole very dry, bitter, woody and you can almost taste the pectin of apple peel. The whole thing together with young wood, some cocoa, brine, light chili and salted caramel, olives, glue and lots of spices and subtly smoky... I like it much better when I try it again 1 year later! Nice thing!

The nose is relatively fresh but not entirely to my liking… there is a vegetal note to this, which I‘m not very fond of…. can’t quite put my finger to it… olive… cabbage..? A bit strange tbh. I prefer the palate over the nose. Some honey sweetness, fruits and olive-y salty notes alongside a woody maturity. Overall an interesting mix with some complexity on the palate.

02-09.04.2022 This was crazy week, where some friends and I rented a nice summerhouse on Rømø. The plan was to go nuts for a whole week with different rums without going overboard. The final agreement came to 6 rums a day and then enjoy nice walks or ferry rides during the day. Notes Medium dark in colour. Nose Intense, fresh, light wood, fruits, light nutts, apple, light vegetal. Palate Intense, warm, light wood, fruits, apple, faint workshop, light caramel, light nutts, spice, cinnamon. Finish Long and warm, medium spicy, medium dry, fruits, faint mint, light citrus.

A Savanna that hits with the force of a tsunami. The nose is powerful, with strong spicy notes that go hand in hand with the alcohol, which is very present here. It takes some time to air out and develop aromas of green apple (thanks to the Calvados finish), citrus (lime), dried fruit and notes of rubber and polish. After aeration, freshness dominates the glass and nostrils. The attack on the palate is intense, the calvados cask bringing out the green apple, but the spices and alcohol emerge to give the palate a boost and warmth. Roasted wood, salt and chocolate add depth. However, the alcohol tends to intrude on the palate and unbalance it; it could have been better integrated. The finish is long, dry and smoky. Bitter notes, wood, spices (cloves, pepper, salt, licorice) and toasty notes prolong the flavors on the palate. The fruit loses its presence, replaced by the warmth of the spices. A very intense Savanna, a little tense and could have done with a slight reduction for better balance.

Great Savanna tasting with Artur. A fairly present woody side, sweetness, apple and a slight tar. Vigorous and rich entry on the palate, then the aromas rise and almost immediately fall again. Cedar wood and apple are at the forefront. The finish is quite long, apple, more apple. Ah! Yes, the finish is in Calvados cask! A nice bitterness develops and this finish is well balanced.

By far the best of the 3 Wild Island (haven't tasted the Grand Étang Sec and the Piton), I think I really like its power and its gourmand side brought by the Calvados finish.

👃 Baked apple in caramelized sugar, acidity of artisanal cider, esters of fermented apple, fruit pastries. The fruity profile is accompanied by citrus, Cognac raisins, berries and earthy pear. A slight sap side. A note of dry biscuits with nut powder passing by. Then leather, rough nuts, black tea, dried mint, shoe polish and wood varnish. A nose more complex than it appears, aeration makes it evolve pleasantly. 😋 Many variations of Calvados cask and dry oak. Quite marked astringency. I get caramelized apples, passion fruit acidity, cough syrup, dried fruits, bitter vanilla chocolate, peppery and salty spices, leather, dried mint. More cask here compared to the nose and less fruit. ⛳ Long, warm, woody, dry, bitter. Old Calvados cask, cider apple, sour cherry, dried fruits, green olive, sweet pepper, chocolate, nuts. Long finish of green tea, dried mint leaf. 💡 Very good integration of the alcohol and the two aging casks, Cognac and Calvados. The latter is more pronounced. It reminds me a lot of the Unshared Cask cask #985 released in 2024 for Belgium (RX22325). No wonder, this Wild Island Vague carries the same cask number as the latter. Is it really the same cask that has been reused? In comparison, this batch is darker and more complex than the Mérou which is more fruity and balanced. But they are very similar.

Calvados finish is clear. Apple dominates the fruity tone. But alongside that, the Savanna is very dry, medicinal, and wood-forward in the mouth. Quite spicy towards the end. Alcohol is quite noticeable.

Interesting nose. To me too intrusive. On the palate then a kind of Calvados to taste. I like it very much. Recommendable rum that one should treat oneself to. I will order a bottle.

Savanna Vague: Hello everyone, here is my tasting feedback for the Savanna Vague: It is a traditional rum (molasses) vintage 2006 aged 13 years in ex-cognac and calvados barrels, with 64.5 degrees. 👃: The first nose promises a powerful alcohol then notes of burnt caramel, caramelized apples with in the background light but present notes of camphor and menthol. 👄: The very first aroma on the palate is caramel in the pan then camphor imposes itself as the dominant aroma. The finish surprises me for a traditional rum because its notes of damp wood and macadamia nuts remind me of some aged Martinique rums. The finish is rather long. In the end, we have here a rather good traditional rum but in my opinion it lacks balance and complexity. I found the nose more complex and seductive than the palate. The palate surprised me with this finish like an agricole rum. My sample was opened less than a year ago but it is already oxidized, so it should be drunk quickly.

I find this is a product that flew too much under the radar, a beautiful expression of the traditional ones from Savannah, with a cognac and Calvados barrel, magnificent with a real value. On the palate, I find the Calvados barrel stands out with targeted apple woodiness, a varnished wood aspect, quite present, the alcohol degree is quite high. Despite everything, the integration is perfect, a ration is necessary for this product.

French style rum Rums from the Savanna distillery are some of my favorites. I recommend everyone try especially the ester-heavy pieces like Grand arôme or HERR. You haven't felt so much fruit in just a few drops of liquid for a long time.
