A DOK that lives up to its name. Lots of esters and totally funky. The combination with sherry, which I am usually very skeptical about, is a success here. The alcohol is not perfectly integrated and the finish is a little peppery. Given the abv, however, this should come as no surprise.

Very interesting in itself, rich fruit notes, along with an aroma that on one hand has roasted notes, but also heavy sweetness of dried fruits and honey. Flanked by subtle spices and last but not least a fairly decent fieriness, the alcohol asserts itself emphatically here. Overall very interesting and already surprisingly complex for its young age; the overall construct has potential and is pleasing, but so are various other (young) High Ester releases with sweet wine finish, some of which are even better balanced.

A young Hampden as esterified as it is radiant. The nose is as intense as it is versatile, with a huge medicinal blast (esters, glue, nail polish, solvents) followed by a fruity earthquake (banana, pineapple, mango, papaya, lime) and beautiful notes of pastry roundness (marzipan, caramel). There's a slight woody influence and some spices (chili, vanilla) that enhance this very tasty olfactory profile. The attack on the palate is opulent with the same medicinal and phenolic heaviness. The cask does its job, offering woody, roasted notes leaning towards sherry and spices (chili, vanilla). The funk is concentrated on tropical fruits, citrus, and pastry notes. The rum is powerful and astringent, but impressive in its integration of alcohol. The finish is intense, warm, funky, astringent, and slightly bitter. The tannins graft onto the phenolic notes to numb the palate, while the fruits lose some of their flavors. The woody and spicy notes prolong the gustatory pleasure. A raw but very well-crafted Hampden, with many qualities for its young age.

Young, wild Hampden with distinct ester and solvent character. On the nose fermented pineapple, banana, and lacquer, accompanied by citrus and a hint of herbs. On the palate raw, explosive, and strong in alcohol with intense fruit, salty spice, and a slightly bitter touch. The finish is long, hot, and edgy. An uncompromising, unruly Jamaican showing a lot of character but clearly marked by its young age.

On the nose a classic delicious DOK... I love this scent! On the palate then surprisingly, besides the typical ester bomb quite bitter wood influences and peppery spices !The finish holds initially bitter wood flavors, which later turn into bitter herbs before! At the very end, fruity notes appear again.one notices his young age, whereby the bitter notes surprise me a little!

#7 RumXHighE(a)ster weeks: Blind tasting: Hampden C<>H approx. 27 years of aging (1993) approx. 60% high ester Very fruity, spicy, high ester, glue with a hint of the barel. Result: Intersting one. My thought was of an older rum because of it‘s darker tawny color, but here you can see what a continental agining in a sherry barrel can do wonders. After an half hour and third dip i found the sherry barrel in the finish. I enjoyed this one a lot 👍🏻

Crazy DOK! The sherry influence is strongly noticeable and of course also gives quite a bit of sweetness. It reminds me mostly of vanilla pudding, caramelized banana, fermented pineapple almost like vinegar, and milk chocolate with a lot of glue. The alcohol is overall very present, which is not surprising but could still be better integrated. Still absolutely delicious stuff! I feel similarly about this as with the predecessor PX DOK: the aging exclusively in sherry casks doesn't feel natural and makes an actually not yet matured product drinkable faster. Whether you like that or not is up to each person to decide. But I find over 100€ a bit too much for a 2-year-old PX cask rum...

Blind tasting sip of Worthy Park with finish because I found WP banana and some grapes somewhere. Well. We're practicing 😅 Nose besides the banana 😉 lots of esters and glue, some marzipan. On the palate again the full blast of esters, lots of tropical fruit, quite a bit of wood and also the sherry note comes through clearly. Finish then rather a bit roasted, I find the finish actually rounds off this alcohol and ester bomb quite well. Also added two drops of water once. On the palate then more pleasing, but the finish is clearly too bitter for me.

For a DOK I find a surprisingly floral nose but of course also esters, glue, caramel candies and pineapple. Even a bit of marzipan. Sherry is clearly noticeable. The alcohol does not hide - it's almost 70%! Accordingly, the first impression on the palate is biting. With a few drops of water it gets better and spice, fruit and sweetness balance nicely. Then quickly takes over a dry and somewhat unpleasant bitterness. Unfortunately costs a few points. The aftertaste is surprisingly short and slightly bitter.

Blind tasting, #Easterweeks Day 7: At first sniff I thought 'High Ester' and 'I know this.' Based on the color, I was quite sure the rum had aged at least 8 years tropical. Alcohol quite present but not disturbing. Guess is 65%. After cross-tasting various possible rums, I settled on Hampden 2010 C<>H, 10y, 68.5%. Wrong again. Crazy what 2 years of pure sherry cask aging can do, although I didn't really perceive the sherry much. Very interesting.

Rum X Easter 23.4.22: Lots of esters, on the nose lots of nail polish. Tastes like tropical ripeness, slight tingling on the tongue. Guess 12 years, around 64%. I guess a Habitation bottling. Far off, my guess. But cool rum. The color in such a short time is very intense.

It's been a great year, probably one if the craziest one's ever 🥰 Met many new run friends both online and in person, travelled a lot Germany, Belgium, France and Sweden. Next year should be a bit more tranquil I hope, because I have a ton of samples 🙃 Nose Intense, fresh, ester, fruity, overripe, banana, light pineapple, light chocolate, light caramel, glue. Palate Intense, warm, oily, fruity, light glue, overripe, ester, banana, light citrus, light berries, spice. Finish Very long and warm, intense, fruity, ester, light chocolate, pineapple. Empty glass Vanilla, light chocolate, faint caramel, banana, berries, glue.

Does a DOK get better when it goes into a PX cask? Well, on the nose it actually does, as expected: intense esters and intense sherry. Esters with vinegar, pineapple, banana, and solvent or polish. I like that. PX with sulfur, dark fruits, yes, almost a bit like red wine. That makes it a bit unbalanced. Personally, I don't like that so much. Matter of taste. On the palate, the esters are powerful. This is even enhanced by the PX. Initially astringent, then pineapple and banana with marzipan come through again. The sherry cask gives clear sulfur and some phenol. At the back, the esters remain and it becomes increasingly berry-like. On the palate, I prefer the PX maturation, but in my opinion, it's too much and no, a DOK doesn't need that!

I must confess that I can’t perceive much of the PX finish, the high esters and high ABV leave little room for other notes. Similar on the palate. But just the fact that S.B.S has once again released something ‘experimental’ should be honored 😊

Day 7 in the RumX Ester calendar, blind. I'll keep it short: the full load of esters, glue, pineapple. I think Jamaica, but I don't want to commit. That I don't recognize a DOK immediately surprises me a bit. Here the sherry cask made me think. I'm not the biggest DOK fan and I don't find sherry finish so great either (actually almost no finish...), so I'm not the biggest fan of this rum either. Overall, not a bad bottling, surprising for the age and was available at a fair price back then!

Hits exactly my taste again. Unlike the Wagemut I had before, a good step up. Once again, big thanks to Jarek who let me have his bottle. Edit: had to correct it upwards again after trying with a few drops of water. Then it becomes an absolutely good sipper. That scares me.

Flavor-wise a real highlight, but the alcohol is a bit too strong. From nose to mouth you find the classic aromas of ester, tropical fruits (especially pineapple), wood and vanilla. The sherry cask influence is clearly positive from the start. Unfortunately, the noble drop burns a bit too much, even for high-ABV lovers. Still a great rum!

On the nose, the acetone-dissolved fermented fruits come out stronger than on the palate. Here, overripe pineapple, petrol and sherry compete for dominance, but to give a quite pleasant overall picture. The result is impressive for such a short aging. IMHO the best S.B.S DOK so far, especially because the higher alcohol content compared to the 0.2 ltr bottles with 50/53% comes across as more intense in taste without the percentages overpowering everything. In my view, the best you can do with a high ester Jamaican, little time but good cask management in a continental climate. I must add, however, that I prefer the grilled pineapple profile of a DOK more than the light pineapple aroma of a C<>H of white gummy bears.

Well. This is strong. The dok character is here. The sherry cask calms it a bit. Nice glue. Sherry. Intense style. טעימה אצל חבר הדוק הראשון שניסיתי. הפרופיל הזה פרופיל טוב ומובן איך רבים ממש אוהבים אותו. אבל אני לא מצליח להתחבר עד הסוף. המון לקה. השרי מורגש בקטע לא רע. יש אננס ובננה. חזק מאוד. אבל... בקבוק מגניב שיהיה לך אם אתה רוצה לפנק בפצצות הטרפנטין האלה :)

My RumRatings review from 4 years ago: The rum immediately shows where it belongs. Hampden High Ester is the program right away. The rum should stand and breathe for 40-60 minutes so it becomes less aggressive. But it remains intense ester notes. Lots of fermented fruit, solvents and some banana. But the sherry cask helps the rum. There’s also a pleasant sweetness noticeable. On the palate the rum is brutal. I find the ester notes very intense and unfiltered. Here too the sherry cask helps a bit with a light sweetness and nice wood notes to rein in the esters a little. The rum is long on the finish and can still be tasted the next morning after two meals. Tasting another rum afterwards makes little sense. I admit the SBS is brutal and maybe the first rum I prefer with a little water because it takes the extreme sharpness away. The rum clearly stands for pure ester. The PX cask fits well and gives the rum a bit more depth and softens everything a bit. Absolutely exciting but only for absolute lovers of high ester rums.

Not at all what I expected on the nose! Little glue and butyric acid, but nice pineapple, rum raisins, sugary dough. Basically a sweet dough piece with baked pineapple and raisins. The alcohol doesn’t bother despite the ABV! On the palate you do notice the almost 70%, alongside the typical fermented tropical fruits that also stay in the finish. The alcohol is just too much for me here, even though it’s very well integrated. By the way, it’s worth leaving the glass standing, unexpected chocolate/caramel/spice and tobacco notes come up on the nose. The empty glass develops the aroma of smoked ham overnight. Very exciting. In summary, extremely diverse and complex on the nose, but the high ABV makes it tough on the palate. Probably outstanding in a blend as a flavor contributor – or in cocktails?

Tried as a 5cl sample. My first DOK in a crosstasting with LP TECA(RX307). Upon pouring, a very nice intense fruit note on the nose, but very quickly overwhelmed by glue, polish, and lacquer. On the palate quite strong alcoholic, behind that a nice fruit basket with a somewhat artificial aftertaste. The Sherry finish is also present through the sweetness. In the finish, woody notes come in. The alcohol really burns your throat here. If it were better integrated, I would certainly have more fun with this. I like the TECA much better. Both are brutal ester bombs and nothing I want every day. Overall, the DOK is not quite my thing. Maybe it's just this bottling.
