Mezan Trinidad 2003
"My first Mezan and pretty disappointing," one taster wrote, and that's the recurring theme: a lovely nose of light wood, cherry, vanilla and red fruits that doesn't carry through to the palate. Several describe the mouth as flat and watery despite the 46% — copper, metallic edges, light spice, short finish. A 16-year Trinidad that promises more on the nose than it gives.
- Inviting nose
- Cherry and red fruit
- Soft, easy sipping

How does Mezan Trinidad 2003 taste?
Aggregated from 23 community reviews.
Pretty nose, flat watery palate Pretty divided, landing mid-pack. The nose wins most people over — cherry, wood, soft vanilla — but several call the palate flat, watery and a touch metallic. A few enjoy it; some say cocktails only.

8,2:On the nose , we find a molasses rum with roundly medicinal accents. Aromatic herbs, sometimes resinous, sometimes chlorophyll, bring depth and freshness. The toasted oak takes us back to a little more familiar territory, as do the slightly tart red fruits which follow, burnt sugar . With airing, an icing sugar. We then bounce from one marshmallow to another, then coming across a soft vanilla or powdered strawberries. Once again, the lightly toasted white wood brings us its slightly more robust aromas with dried, nutty fruits. 8,5:The palate is coated by a woody and caramelized wave, with a fairly pleasant concentration, then surprisingly a nice wave of grapefruit. Vanilla envelops a pinch of roasted spices, then we find notes of slightly resinous molasses. Nuts are caught in a brittle but nevertheless delicious nougatine and dried, poached fruits. After long time, blackcurrant heavily.... 8,2:The finish is fine and light, with caramelized and dark fruits. There is a small layer of smoke.

Only for coctails, maybe....

Tobacco (almost cold tobacco) and smokiness first embalm the nose. Then comes a much sweeter scent and sweet fruit (mango? cherry?). It makes you want more. On the palate, first the alcohol, then a strong bitterness. Then a little sweetness and light, sweet fruit. As is often the case, aeration brings a little roundness and softness. All in all, the nose was promising. Too bad the taste doesn't match it. It's still pleasant, but the alcohol is too present despite the reduction to leave room for the aromas.

An open bottle for this tasting. The nose is light, diluted but with aromas of earth, bourbon, vegetal and pear. On the palate, the aromas of the nose are absent. It's flat and watery. The finish is very short, with a lingering vegetal edge. The empty glass is on the bourbon. A disappointing Trinidad rum, the nose is fine but the palate and finish are flat and diluted. Should be very pleasant in mixology.

Nose Fresh, light wood, leather, workshop, spice, light fruit, cherry. Palate Light, light wood, cherry, light caramel, nutmeg, light floral. Finish Short to medium, light wood, naturally sweet, dried fruit, light, spice.

It’s a bit flat for my tastes, some subtle interesting notes on the nose which is nougat and red fruit or cherry. The mouth is a bit empty, copper and metallic elements with a hint of washing up liquid. The finish is long, with gentle warmth and light spice mixed with damp earth. My first Mezan and pretty disappointing, with not enough going on and lack of balance
