Caroni S.B.S Trinidad „The Beast“ #2 1993
Caroni obsessives are the audience here — this 1993, 28-year Trinidad column-still bottling drinks like the distillery's signature in full force. Expect glue, varnish, rubber and leather on the nose, then earthy tobacco, menthol and a firmly bitter, oaky palate. Several tasters call it "rounder" than the first Beast, with a bit more fruit peeking through, but it's still a demanding, tarry dram.
The community says- Classic Caroni funk
- Complex, rubbery nose
- But: Bitter palate

Just like the first version, this is truly a beast. However, the second version feels (from memory) rounder and more delicate. There are hints of fruits alongside Caroni notes (which however are pretty much overwhelmed by leather and wood)

Interesting one. I will remember this rum mainly because of the sourness and tech taste combo.

Compared to the previous "Beast" this one is slightly better, but only by margins. I got a good price on this bottle and that convinced me to get it. The nose is woody and smoky with leather, varnish and solvents in almost perfect harmony. The palate is intense, complex and medium bitter with roasted oak, leather varnish and a hint of tobacco and coffee. The finish is long and bitter with roasted oak. Price to quality can be argued, but it is a palate teaser.

Fun thing. I did not have the first Beast. I found the nose extremely cool. It reminds me of plastic toys from the nursery. I also found a lot of Caroni notes. Then in the mouth it's joined by some neat smoke and varnish. And in the finish first, a surprising amount of fruit components. The finish is long. But with time remains the taste of an ashtray filled with menthol cigarettes.

74 points. Decent nose, wood juice on the palate, slightly unpleasant.
