Mezan Travellers Belize 2008

Sipped neat is where this Travellers 13-year lives: chocolate-covered marzipan and caramel up front, with a pencil-shaving woodiness sitting quietly underneath. A few minutes open it up to dark chocolate wrapped around orange zest. At 46% the body reads a little diluted mid-palate — one taster wanted more punch — but the dry sweetness and spice keep it interesting to the end.

Chocolate-caramel sipper, nose beats the palate Well-liked as an unpretentious after-dinner sipper — chocolate and caramel win people over. The recurring gripe: the palate feels thinner than the nose promises.

As soon as you open the bottle, you sense the sweetness of chocolate-covered marzipan, followed by caramel, with a discreet woody note. Dark chocolate enrobes orange zest after a few minutes. On the palate, the attack is soft with caramel and chocolate, spices spice things up, citrus fruits are still present but this time yellow lemon takes pride of place. A slight tannic edge, not unpleasant, adds a hint of bitterness. Medium-long finish on caramel and lemon zest. Pleasantly surprised by this unpretentious bottle, a fairly mild but very interesting rum.

A rum tasted at the Lucerne Gin and Rum Festival in 2024. A well-balanced nose with varnished wood, tropical fruit, a pastry side and a vegetal side too. The palate is clearly in the background, diluted, with an interesting dark chocolate and pencil lead side. The finish is short, on spices and cask. A rum with a fine nose, but too diluted.

Couleur auburn, nez de « taille crayon », mine de crayon certainement le bois. Bouche sur le bois sans être gênant, on retrouve la mine de crayon et un équilibre assez plaisant ! Finale sucrée sur le caramel.

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 250 Rums

Travellers is the rum that put Belize on the map. It began in 1953 as a bar in Belize City, grew into a family distillery under the Perdomo name, and today is synonymous with Belize rum. Its molasses spirit comes off a hurricane-proofed column still in three different marques, and a deep stock of aged casks has made it a quiet favourite of independent bottlers around the world.
