Here's the twist: this is a Caroni that plays it gentle. The tar, rubber and licorice markers are all there, but softer and rounder than the heavy 1998s many hunt for. A few tasters found real caramel and a touch of olive, though most agree the alcohol never fully settles — several call it hot and not perfectly integrated. Give it time in the glass.

Fair evaluation A continental 98 Caroni like many others... Very strong alcohol

02-09.04.2022 This was crazy week, where some friends and I rented a nice summerhouse on Rømø. The plan was to go nuts for a whole week with different rums without going overboard. The final agreement came to 6 rums a day and then enjoy nice walks or ferry rides during the day. Day 4 Notes Medium dark in colour. Nose Light wood, light workshop, light olive, faint chocolate, light cherry. Palate Oily, light wood, light tannins, faint coffee, light chocolate, faint coffee, faint salt. Finish Medium long, light wood, faint chocolate, light tannins, faint earthy, faint coffee. Extra note. Needs to rest for a good while to make the ABV settle properly.

Actually a very smooth Caroni. But when it comes to Caroni, I usually look for the heavy, dirty notes, and this guy brings them in a very mild, balanced form. Because of that and the not optimally integrated alcohol, it doesn't deserve a higher rating. The price is clearly too high.

For me, a balanced, rounded Caroni that unfolds its full flavor spectrum with enough time. It's not quite as dirty, but the typical Caroni aromas are present, plus lots of caramel and a bit of olive on the palate.

In my opinion, not quite as "dirty" a Caroni from the 1998 vintage. The typical markers you expect are clearly recognizable, but it doesn't stand out from the other bottlings of the vintage. Solid, but in my opinion the price is a bit exaggerated and the alcohol is not optimally integrated.

The 1998 Caroni bottling from The Whisky Jury does not differ significantly from the 98 Caronis that I already know. The dirty notes are there, even if they are not as pronounced. Unfortunately, the alcohol is not so well integrated. Needs a little more time in the glass.

06/02/2026: Road Rummers S09T03 @ TasTToe. A nice continental Caroni from vintage 1998. The usual dirty tar and rubber notes are definitely present, and the alcohol is integrated decently. Even though it didn't end up in 1st place, it's always nice to end a tasting with a Caroni. 05/10/2024: Salon du Rhum 2024.

Nice nose. Dirty, spicy, fruity, light caramel note. Unfortunately quite sharp on the palate, the same markers as on the nose appear alongside. The alcohol is very present and unfortunately suppresses the aroma that the nose promises.

Salon Du Rhum 2024 Great Caroni. It's been a long time since I tasted a heavy Caroni. This one stil packs a punch. Roadrummers s9t3 Whisky Jury tasting Stick to my score. Maybe not that complex but strong Caroni profile from beginning to end. So i like it.
