Sip this neat and give it time — it needs a good half hour in the glass to settle. The nose is a Hampden fruit bomb: ripe pineapple, banana, glue and varnish, with marzipan sitting underneath. Then the palate swerves hard into acidity — several tasters call it almost vinegary, "on the acidic side of things," and the finish turns woody and a touch bitter. At 57.7% the alcohol stays well integrated. Wild, old, and not for everyone.

Today in direct comparison to RX11000 No difference in color. Nose: also hardly any difference, maybe a bit more funk and fruit here. Palate: here I notice the biggest difference: RX11400 goes a bit more towards sour (sour milk, rancid butter) RX11000 has a slight resin note at the start. Today the sourness hardly bothers me, therefore +0.6 Overall the difference is marginal. Again a surprisingly light Hampden from 1993 for its age. These rums seem so full of aromas that they no longer take on color 😉 Nose: Right after pouring there is no doubt where this rum comes from. Without direct comparison the nose appears very intense with lots of varnish and a lot of butyric acid. Similar (just not as intense) I remember it from the 2000 Hampden GH. Palate: wow, that's really a lot of acidity, almost like a "spoiled" wine! That's somehow unpleasant. Otherwise very intense. The sourness decreases a bit over time in the glass. Wood and roast notes are now clearly present. Long aftertaste with the typical tendency to slightly salty green olives. Hmm, overall very good but the acidity on the palate is too much for me. Other notes said the sourness fades - looking forward to a second tasting.

Disappointing. The spicy nose with medicinal notes reminded me of Fiji. In the mouth and on the palate, however, the acidity is far too engaging, almost vinegary. It gets even worse with water. I think it's okay but absolutely not top league.

Wonderful typical HD nose with lots of fruit and a load of esters. Woody notes also come through. Alcohol barely perceptible. Slight acidity stings in the nose 😯 On the palate ohhh what's happening here 😳😳😳 very sour, slightly musty and woody . Nose and palate don't go together for me. Finish is then already very bitter and woody (old musty wood 😮) Nose would be clearly over 80 for me ... but the taste drops so incredibly, too bad.

The smell is somewhat surprising with a rather unusual lactic acid note, although the aroma on the nose with the typical fruit esters, wood influences and subtle pastry notes and spices is still quite convincing. On the palate, however, a very dominant fruit acid stands out, which comes across too extreme for me and clearly overlays the rest of the profile. Even if the nose still provides a few plus points makes me taste no longer too great joy. For me, the first really disappointing Hampden bottling from 1993. //Update August 2023: Second attempt from a different sample. The lactic acid is gone. While the rum remains on the intense astringent side, even for the 1993 C<>H vintage, I no longer find the offending notes now. Therefore, clear upward correction. Not the best 93, but absolutely on par with the great releases of the vintage.

#4716 04.05.2024 Had a nice exclusive tasting at Romdeluxe with our little rum group. Nose Intense, fresh, fruity, banana, glue, ester, light wood, light citrus. Palate Intense, spicy, light wood, faint smoke, fruity, pineapple, naturally sweet, ester. Finish Long and warm, fruity, pineapple, faint chocolate, ester, light polish.

An old, mature high ester. Exactly my thing. Nose: intense and powerful. A crass ester with lots of acidity and clear vinegar notes. Lemon, lime and pineapple, plus glue with solvent. But there's also a dense marzipan sweetness behind it. Very nice, fun. 8,6 Palate: very unexpectedly sour, somehow totally different and somehow good. Astringent, sour esters with lots of lemon, pineapple and kiwi. Becomes a bit buttery on the back, like yoghurt with an artificial jelly bean sweetness. But in the end, the sour esters predominate with a sweet finish. 8.8

This RDL JMC rightly belongs to the Wild Series, not just in name... The nose is perfectly balanced: the fruity, fermented aromas paired with not too dominant ester and intense marzipan scent is simply top!!! The palate then surprises clearly: initially still the classic marzipan/vanilla sweetness, the aromas shift into a strong acid-heavy fruit world. And initially so intense that everything else is overshadowed. Gradually the differentiated fine fruit/spice and wood aromas appear... This is not easy to handle.. The finish is then noticeably gentler again and remains mostly with the sour fruit aromas... This JMC is quite wild despite its age and definitely not for beginners. You have to give it quite a bit of time. Especially on the palate.

On the nose, the full pack of estery notes: fermented (tropical) fruit, overripe banana, varnish and butterscotch. The taste is predominantly dairy products such as butter and yoghurt. Also fermented fruit and varnish. Doesn't quite meet my taste profile.

JMC corresponds to C<>H, and that's why RomDeLuxe on the nose comes very strongly over fermented fruits and buttermilk notes, alongside pastries and lemon peel. I like that a lot, and it already comes close to the Flens 2007. For the 28 years of aging, however, it is quite acid-heavy on the palate, almost vinegar-like. The 30-year-old RA and Rum Cask can do that much better.

Great High Ester. Compared to its vintage peers, the ester is not quite as dominant. Pineapple and tropical fruits come through more strongly here. On the palate, you feel something sour, which disappears again in the finish. Alcohol is excellently integrated!

In a spontaneous comparison today, a few candidates from 1993 were in the pot. First of all, there was no real loser, all at a very high level. In the end, it's only personal nuances that could be different on another day. My personal ranking would be 1. RX12618 2. RX12648 3. RX11797 4. RX11400

A beautiful fruit bomb from Romdeluxe. Nose as usual with Hampden with esters, fruit and especially pineapple. After half an hour, the alcoholic smell subsides. On the palate simply awesome, fruit and pineapple explosion. The 57% are very well integrated. Almost smooth.

What a bomb pineapple nose. Really fills the room when pouring. Wonderful. On the palate surprisingly smooth. Also a dominant pineapple here. However, no sharpness at all. Really a great drop.

Surprisingly very light color for a 28 years aging. On the nose very similar to GH 2021, with heavy ripe pineapple, glue and spices. On pallate would rate it a bit higher it's more sweet and more sour and less dry at the same time, albeit quite light. Alcohol well integrated, but overall probably won't be very memorable.

Fruit bomb! Besides the Hampden High Ester fruit basket, I find lactic acid, a strawberry Hubba Bubba fruitiness or Campino strawberry and some wood as well as slight glue. Also slightly salty and some olive. On the finish, the wood comes out more and then becomes somewhat bitter. A nice piece, but the high price remains.

Hampden, legendary Jamaican distillery, which besides rum also produces alcohol for perfumes. In all rums from this distillery you can feel wild esters, after which your whole body soaks in the scent of yellow tropical fruit - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the rums you "must try before you die".

(Edit: second tasting, now the rum has been in the glass for over an hour. Comments in parentheses added) The nose is initially strong, a mix of butyric acid, dough, and glue, maybe a tiny bit of banana. Slightly sticky cookie dough mixed with glue. Not the tropical fruit salad you usually know. (On the second try, the fruit component is stronger, fresher, leaning towards apple/orange, even chocolate briefly appears and the butyric acid is much less.) On the palate surprisingly, it feels like drinking sparkling wine. The acidity makes me hardly notice the alcohol at first and creates a strangely thin, almost watery impression. Actually rather unpleasant. (On the second attempt now much less "sparkling wine-like", almost sweet fruit and hints of oily ship engine. A massive improvement.) The finish is medium length with solvents, glue, and the typical chemical/mechanical aroma, diesel? Only on the lips after 1-2 minutes remains a faint hint of mango and honey. (Second try brings more honey and fruit as well as oil/diesel, glue is gone.) Somehow quite interesting, but is it really a nice enjoyment? I only find the somewhat unpleasant notes of the Jamaicans without the fruitiness here. Exciting as a taste experiment, but a few cl as a sample are enough for me. (In the second attempt with over 1 hour in the glass it shows itself much more pleasant. Also, the empty glass with a little water after 2 hours produces an intense aroma of wet leaves, tobacco, and slightly rotten grapes. There is more in this rum than thought. Rating +1.0) #21:250228

Getting a lot of smoke on the nose and the taste is too pungent. Had high expectations based on other CH bottlings, but this is definitely not for me.

The nose starts with pineapple, banana, esters and chemical notes, than it developes light marzipan and buttery notes and after further aeration it becomes bit acidic. The palate keeps it characteristic notes, but the acidity is bit too much on the palate, but not overpowering.
