Habitation Velier Foursquare LFT White 2021
"Not the typical Foursquare profile," as one member puts it — and that's the whole point. This unaged, long-fermentation pot-still white throws glue, olive, lime and green vegetal notes at you, with a floral, almost Clairin-like edge. Despite the "High Ester" name, most tasters find the funk surprisingly restrained. Interesting and different, though several note it's a bit linear and could use time in a cask.

How does Habitation Velier Foursquare LFT White 2021 taste?
Aggregated from 95 community reviews.
Atypical unaged Barbados white, glue and olive People find this a genuinely atypical Foursquare — glue, olive and citrus over a floral base. Divisive: some love the complexity, others find it thin, hot, and less estery than the name promises.

Overall a very interesting rum from Foursquare which is partly reminiscent of white Jamaica rum and Rivers Antoine. My good friend Björn “Romsoffan” offered me a glass of this somehow different Foursquare at Foursquare Appreciation Day, released by Habitation Velier. It’s what Richard Seale call, a Long Fermentation Type (LFT). It’s a Pot Still from both molasses and cane juice with Esters 555 gr/hlpa, which is the same level as HLCF from Jamaica.

I’m into Foursquare, but the white FS doesn’t grab me at all. Neither on the nose nor on the palate does it convince, quite the opposite. Lots of vegetal notes on the nose with glue and floral hints, slightly nutty and musty. Not really my thing. On the palate sharp, floral, green, musty, medicinal. Hard for me to finish the glass...

My first thought was that this shouldn't be bottled. I think if Velier wasn't behind it, the cut here would be worse. Ester and Foursquare is really exciting. But not my cup of tea. If something like this was still stored with barrel ageing at Foursquare, I'd be thrilled. The ageing could take the beastliness out of the distillate.

I don't know what makes this rum high ester, but overall I like it very much. Nicely balanced white rum, fruity at first, then slightly astringent.

This is a retasting and I stick to my initial score 😊 ----- Velier really knows how to pick them. A well balanced white with fruit and light spices and a lovely floral note. Well rounded and dry on the palate and there is a very light minty note in the profile. The empty glass is really nice.
Review by Giorgio Garotti
Very pleasant white rum where Foursquare manages to keep an excellent balance once again! That said, for me it lacks a bit of intensity and richness of flavors that I definitely look for when tasting a white rum!
Review by Leo Krüper
Very interesting white rum. Could also be a very good round Worthy Park. I hardly notice the high esters. The long fermentation makes me think more of Clairin. A mild, round, drinkable white rum for the %. I just don't see any possible use for this rum. Too expensive and unspectacular to drink straight. It lacks something special for mixing (and is far too expensive).

Day 6 RumX Rarities. An explosion of flavors on the nose: fruit, artichoke, wood wax, banana cake. The palate is fairly smooth, even if you can feel the watts. Dark vegetal aromas and very bitter chocolate beans. But also a clear floral edge. The finish is fairly short, but there's still a soft, almost sweet edge. The empty glass resembles this rum, with great complexity but little depth. For my taste, the aging is lacking.

A very atypical white Foursquare, whose name "High Ester" unfortunately does not represent much. On the nose, there are many floral and vegetal notes, including olive, iodine, citrus and apple. On the palate, medicinal notes are added to the floral and vegetal notes, as well as to the citrus already present. The aromas are rather timid and dissipate quickly in the mouth, while the rum itself is a bit unbalanced and lacks aromatic tones. The finish is of very average length, pushed by very light menthol and eucalyptus notes and some fruits. A rather linear and a bit flat rum, but which should be interesting in mixology.

Shop visit Rhum Attitude Brussels May 2025. Took it as a sample. The only unaged rum I bought. It doesn't make it to the top in the selection either. Sugarcane and citrus fruits are okay, but otherwise too much glue and too medicinal.
Review by zabo
An unaged one that I really like, I wouldn't have thought so. I'll try it again as a mixer.
Review by Thunderbird
Surprisingly gentle on the nose with a floral, fruity note. A little glue is perceptible. But high ester? Rather no. The palate is dominated by herbal aromas and some citrus fruits. The finish also lingers with herbal aromas. This is a different kind of Foursquare, good but not outstanding
Review by Jarek
Retasting as part of the RumX Rarities Experience… I still find Foursquare’s experiment interesting and tasty. This time I found the glue note much more pronounced.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Rarely experienced such an incomprehensible confusion when tasting. Nose first full broadside artificial vanilla aroma of Dr. Oetker, taste then iodine, herbs, medicine, olive, very Vegetabil. Unfortunately, even in the daiquiri not my case. I would never guess foursquare! Will probably lie in the long fermentation😄
Review by Galli33
Interesting stuff 😮💨 Unaged Foursquare — definitely more on the atypical side 😜 It actually reminds me more of a Jamaican rum. You only get that lovely FS coconut note in the finish. A nice rum that will clearly be a hit in a blind tasting.

Not that long but very interesting tasting ! A little harsh at start but developing nice fruit aromas and menthol finish ! En resume, mes notes de degutation : Au nez : Olive, Canne à sucre, Colle, Herbe, Zeste de citron, Abricot En bouche : Agrumes, Citron vert, Fruits tropicaux, Fruits jaunes La finale plutot orientee vers : Mentholé, Canne à sucre, Zeste de citron

Wow. So I was looking forward to it, but even my wife could read the result on my face. I don't find the alcohol well integrated at all, very sharp and spritzy, I've had much better newmakes in the glass. With lots of water it was somewhat better, it feels creamy on the palate but the personally unpleasant sharpness of the alcohol mutes all emerging floral and mineral notes. A pity actually. I'll do like Zabo and pour Coke over it and treat it with a lime.

Tried at the 12 GRF in Berlin: Unaged Foursquare and also High-Ester, that's exciting. Surprisingly little ester noticeable, reminds a bit of a fruit brandy. Certainly exciting to try in a Daiquiri.
Review by Filip Šikula
The first white rum that got me excited at first. A round, creamy aroma. After sipping it vibrates the tongue, but the alcohol integrated perfectly, the vollage is very pleasant. When you press your tongue it warms the whole palate and continues into the belly. This is a bottle you need to have.

Foursquare is a distillery from Barbados producing amazing rums for everyday sipping. It's a rum especially appreciated by rum lovers who are fed up with sugar and looking for a smooth, sweet rum full of coconut, vanilla, chocolate and caramel. Simply pleasant and not aggressive flavors.
Review by Yves Remord
An extremely heavy rum that has nothing to do with the 2015 white. An aromatic bomb that reminds me of the Port Mourant white 2015 Habitation Velier.
Review by Florent Apl
A nice white Foursquare, not the rum of the year but interesting enough to get yourself a sample. Slightly too expensive to get just for cocktails. On the nose I get sweetness, some buttery notes I associate with pastry, ester of course, and some citrus, more specifically lemon. The mouth is less complex, I get mostly sweet ester, some fruits and some végétal notes. The final is medium long, it starts getting bitter and linger on the végétal notes.
Review by Alex1981
Interesting and not bad for an unaged, but somehow also not great? Maybe expectations were a bit high after all the buzz around it, but also don’t get much esters out of it.
Review by Solidfunk
Initial aroma of classic Foursquare. Vanilla, toasted coconut, caramel. A little more raw and unrefined. The only other unaged Foursquare I've had is the Probitas, and that's a mixture. Water white pour. Some overripe fruit as well. Maybe banana. The waters are pretty big in this and they really blow up in the mouth. Some tar in the finish. This is really nice, and gives off some aromas I sometimes wish I'd taste more of in barreled versions of Foursquare. Really a potent flavour. Some pepper. Long finish. Sample from a bottle split organized by xamsx.

This has nothing to do with the typical Foursquare profile, which I generally like. There are estery notes and a slight sweetness. However, it's also quite tangy. A few years of tropical storage could make it very interesting.
Review by Mc Pirate
Very vegetal, ester-like nose, reminiscent of a Jamaican. A touch of chestnut honey tickles the second nose. Sweet mouthfeel! Impressive compared to the nose! Very fruity and sweet, finishing on a magnificent vegetal touch that might make you think of agave!
Review by Joël
It must be the olive in the smell that bothers me a little. It's ok, but I would probably use the rum for cocktails if I had a whole bottle of it.
Review by Mateusz
It’s very interesting rum and the fact it’s made by foursquare and Velier obviously adds to the anticipation of trying it, however I cannot say it beats some other estery rums I tried. I personally would not buy this one.🤔

Road Rummers S8 T2 - Barbados tasting Wow this is a beautiful white. Unfortunately the price is not so beautiful. This is a white I would not mix because it has a nice complexity. Looking forward to drinking more LFT's.
Review by Adrien B
It's good but I don't understand the price.
Review by FischeJ
Nice fruity. Also grassy. Almost reminds me of sugarcane juice or lightly also Clairin. I like it better than expected.

Read full review →Alongside a hard hitting whack of floor polish, petrol and varnish. It's pretty fantastic. Ti Punch it works excellently as well giving a really sharp yet sweet hit to the drink. A Daiquiri is a bit mental as well. As a sipper I'd probably look elsewhere but as a mixer...
