Here's the twist: this Jamaican pot-still drinks more like a Demerara. Several tasters said blind they'd have guessed Guyana — woody, roasted, butterscotch and vanilla lead, with only a faint varnish and tropical fruit hinting at the island. The palate is surprisingly soft for 59%, with brown sugar, toasted almond and a light minty edge. The funk stays quiet; the finish runs long and warm.

A New Yarmouth with a beautiful label. The nose is somewhere between Demerara, with salted butter caramel and spices, and Jamaican rum, with tropical fruit and a light varnish. The palate is surprisingly smooth, but immediately complex and full-bodied, with toasted almonds and very little ester. The finish is infinite and magnificent, with spices, varnished wood and tropical fruit. A great NY experience. The empty glass is very fruity, very Jamaican.

Masterclass Samaroli for the Rhum Club Paris /. A magnificent bottle, very pastry-like, with hints of almond, caramel, menthol and red fruit. Medium finish, but a real slap in the face!
