One taster said it drops you straight into an old machine shop with the sun baking rubber tires — that's this Caroni. Tar, oily varnish, glue and leather up front, then tropical fruit, orange and vanilla underneath. A 1999 vintage aged 21 years at a hefty 65.7%. Powerful but many find it stays balanced, with an endless roasted, minty finish.

A rum tasted in a bar. Superb nose of mechanical workshop and fresh pineapple. You immediately feel transported to a motorcycle repair shop, with the sun beating down and the tires heating up. You can feel the alcohol on the palate, and then the aromas take over. A certain acidity makes the palate very fresh. Like an acidic but very tasty passion fruit. Vanilla and wood, thick fat. The finish is extremely long, with tropical fruit and machine shop. A fine representative of the '99 vintage. The marked acidity on the palate loses it a few points, but it's still an exceptional rum that makes you want to have more. The empty glass is splendid!

When tasting this Caroni, I immediately feel transported to the disused locomotive depot of an often visited Caribbean sugar factory, where the typical smell of various oily, tarry substances is in the air (the steam locomotives parked there were fired with heavy oils, the old wooden sleepers could still have been impregnated with tar creosote).Rums that remind me of beloved places, I like especially. So this one is definitely one of them. Big thanks to Distilia for the great sample at the 11th GRF in Berlin!

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

Finally, a really awesome Caroni in the glass again. Strong stuff. Tar, rubber, lacquer, and solvents are very clearly recognizable here, surprisingly also a bit of mint, but that doesn't diminish the Caroni experience.

This is a very nice Caroni and I'd put it in the medium heavy to heavy category. Typical Caroni flavours complimented by some fruits and a mint touch. Love the roasted wood notes on the palate.

Top-notch medium-bodied Caroni! Consistently lots of tar, rubber, and a good amount of glue. On the nose, dried fruits dominate, from the palate various tropical fruits. Alongside the strong roasted notes, you can taste a slight mint that becomes stronger in the finish.

Online tasting with Rum Explorer, Matt Pietrek and Mitch Wilson tonight! A gentle Caroni, slightly dirty, a bit earthy and some dried fruits as well. Texture is not so intense, it is not up there with the heavy Caronis but it's a nice one.

From the first series of Distilia's Gold Age of Piracy, this Caroni is a beautiful tribute to the pirates of yesteryear. The nose is dense and rich, you can feel Caroni's heavy and gritty side with tarry and rubbery notes. Yet, it has a very elegant profile that combines spices with well-integrated wood in the background and very soft caramelized notes, leather and smoke for a bit of depth, but also exotic fruits, dried fruits, and orange that nicely complete the aromatic spectrum. An intense and very charming nose. The rum is powerful on the palate but very smooth. The dirty side comes through with an oily texture and petrol notes, but also varnish and glue that add a chemical taste in the mouth. Then come rounder and more indulgent notes ranging from exotic fruits to wood, including leather, vanilla, chili, and caramel. It's quite a heavy profile but balanced, complex, and full of charm. The alcohol is well integrated despite the displayed strength. The finish is very long, dry, and delicate. It dresses itself in more chocolatey, roasted, toasted, woody, vanilla, and caramelized hues that end the tasting on a more subtle note. The industrial garage whiffs support to prolong the pleasure. A superb bottling that manages to combine both the power and finesse that Caroni can show.

This 21-year-old Caroni from the 1999 vintage shows a beautiful clear shining golden-brown color. On the nose, some dirty aromas come through immediately, without being overwhelming. There is also a certain roastiness present. Over time, the rubber and tar aromas, as you would expect from a Caroni, become stronger. On the palate, there is more fruit and also a light glue note. The rum has a certain sharpness, but the woody spice along with light caramel and dried fruits balance it out. The finish is medium to long and ends on a spicy note together with a light delicious mint note. I wasn't so enthusiastic at the first sip, but due to the increasingly dirty aromas over time and the surprising fruitiness, I like it very much in the end. Smelling the empty glass is a pleasure.

Nice nose, but finish is way too bitter and unbalanced to my taste. I had to dilute to about 48% to make it drinkable. Otherwise it was too hot, pungent and bitter. Apart from these downsides, it’s quite nice.

A very interesting release from Caroni. It's not a very heavy edition from this legendary distillery, but it is a worthy representative. On the nose, both elegant and dirty, with present tar, railway sleepers, and solvents, but also dark chocolate, tobacco, dried fruits, and tropical, ripe fruits. The aroma also has a certain freshness: delicate salt and menthol. On the palate, intense, sweet-dirty-bitter. What's extraordinary is that these flavors intertwine, creating a whole. A very coherent rum, with a long finish, wonderfully integrated alcohol, and a unique character.

And now for the third GAOP bottling for me directly after the Enmore 29y. Can the Caroni keep up? Let's see! On the nose I have oil, earth and rubber. Hidden behind that is a slight sweetness and green apple. Only now do I see that this one has 65.7%!!! Would have given it a maximum of 56%! Tarry and musty at the same time. On the tongue then bäääm! I don't think medicine that tastes of moss, tar, licorice and rubber has ever tasted so good! And no, the high alcohol content is imperceptible! Eucalyptus, green bell pepper and camomile make their presence felt. The whole thing is accompanied by hints of vanilla. The finish is as long as the Enmore. These two are so different, I can't decide on a winner tonight and I'm not going to!
