#7330 19.09.2026 Relaxing with a few samples after my bike training, trying to release the sore muscle in my hip. Listening to a playlist on Spotify called Discover Weekly. A very nice Caroni with a good price tag at release. Intense profile with roasted wood, Industrial, rubber, tar, fruits, spice, molasses, smoke,, chocolate and a warm and dry palate.

Und einen Caroni zum Abschluss, sollte eigentlich gestern der Abschluss sein, aber egal :) Hat alles was man sich von einem Caroni wünscht. Teer und Benzin in Perfektion, noch etwas Würze, Leder, Gummi, gebrannter Zucker und Vanille und man hat eine richtig leckeren Rum.

8,7:On the nose, industrial with rubber and tar, medicinal with petrol, menthol, slightly dirty, intense, alcoholic, sweet toasted wood/oak notes like candied caramel, chocolate, roasted nuts, citrus, tropical fruits like papaya, mango, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, vanilla is out, yellow fruits, molasses is dark with licorice, black tea, with minty touch, pastry, biscuits join, salty, burnt, oily notes. 8,4:On the palate, the attack is quite intense with industrial burnt rubber, tar, petrol, medicinal menthol, later varnish, slightly dirty, oily, fruity with tropical fruits like papaya, peaches and citrus fruits, slightly fermented, buttery with dairy, molasses is dark with licorice, fresh with tea, a bit herbaceous and the wood is toasted, sweet, smoky, spicy, nutty, meaty. 8,5:The finish is long, dry&tannic, medicinal, industrial, dirty, fruity with yellow, tropical fruits, molasses is a bit mineral, grassy, herbaceous, dark with black tea and the oak is toasted with dark chocolate, nuts, spicy with vanilla, pepper, meaty..

This Caroni 1997 really needs a lot of time in the glass... I recommend at least 45 minutes. The nose has a pleasant sweetness, leather, candied dried fruits, a bit dirty, overripe papaya, a bit of peach and light wood. Alcohol barely noticeable. On the palate oily consistency. Peach, papaya, candied fruits. Leather, a bit of tar and dark chocolate. Almost a bit flat at first. Tar aroma especially in the finish come the dirty bitter aromas but all super smooth... Very harmonious. Alcohol perfectly integrated.

As Tobi already wrote, this rum needs a long time to breathe because at first you still perceive an unpleasant alcohol note which dissipates over time. But waiting is rewarded – tar, gasoline, and solvents form the basic structure, complemented by leather, tea, papaya, and light peach. On the palate, menthol comes in which nicely rounds off the finish.

As such, I find this bottling of a Caroni quite okay, but although it has all the markers you know from this vintage, it lacks the certain kick I get from comparable bottlings.

More like a dirty Caroni among the 97s. Clearly tar and petrol. Haven't had such a dirty fellow in a long time! Also bottled quite a while ago...

Freshly poured you feel like you're at a gas pump, the petrol notes are quite dominant. It needs a lot of time in the glass to become rounder and develop. Then you are rewarded with tar and rubber notes, plus unusual exotic fruits like papaya and rambutan with a slight sweetness. On the tongue you no longer notice the alcohol at all, the 61.8% ABV are incredibly well integrated. Along with the tar comes black tea, burnt sugar and a fine meaty spice. I don't know this from the 97 Caroni, where I rather have a metallic, industrial character in mind. The finish brings notes of menthol and red dried fruits, it lingers for a while - fun to work on!

Schönes Bernstein als Farbe, klar und strahlend. In der Nase ist das ein ganz schön dreckiger Geselle. Echte Überraschung. Heftige Benzinaromen, Teer, Werkstatt. In der Intensität so nicht erwartet. Nach einer Stunde im Glas mäsigt sich diese Aromenpalette und es kommen mehr würzige Noten und Holznoten durch. Am Gaumen dasselbe Spiel. Zuerst massiv die dreckigen Anteile und mit der Zeit wird der Rum vielschichtiger. Etwas Minze kommt dazu und vor allem der würzige Anteil drängt sich nach vorne. Der ABV sehr gut integriert. Der Abgang ist lang und zum Schluss bleiben die Caroni-typischen Aromen am Gaumen hängen. Mit etwas Zeit im Glas eine Freude.

Dieser Caroni benötigt auf jeden Fall Zeit im Glas, damit der leicht stechende Benzin Geruch etwas besser eingebunden wird. Dann hat er eine schöne Nase die durchaus ausgewogen ist. Am Gaumen viel Fasseinfluss und hier habe ich viel Kräuter Tee gefunden. Wird im Abgang immer trockener und es kommen deutliche Bitterstoffe. Dabei sind die klassischen Caroni Noten und der Dreck immer präsent ohne aufdringlich zu sein und hallen lange nach. Für mich kein Überflieger Caroni, aber ein interessanter guter Rum, der schön abgerundet ist und wo das Fass schon spürbar mitreden darf.
