Savanna fans expecting a classic grand arôme ester bomb should recalibrate first — this one leans on its red wine cask instead. Expect burnt caramel, orange marmalade, dark chocolate and cinnamon over roasted oak, with a creamy body and a long oily finish. At 55.6% it sips surprisingly well. #4453 05.11.2023 just came back after visiting a former colleague and he offered a few rums to try. I only have notes because I came unprepared 😊 This one needed to rest for a while to take off the edges. Nose: fruity, roasted wood, cinnamon and a touch of coconut. Palate: roasted wood, fruity, raisin, caramel and light chocolate. Finish: medium to long with oily touch. Fruity with some chocolate and spices. The empty glass hasld some light vegetal and solvent notes.

Deviates from the known profile of the Grand Aromes from La Reunion but quite clear. May be partly due to the barrel influence, but the usual DNA with overripe strawberries and mint is completely missing here. Instead, the already mentioned wood notes come to bear paired with clear spice and fruit esters, which show themselves for a Grand Arome but comparatively subliminal. The rum leaves me somewhat perplexed - the wood and spice impact is too clear to me, from Grand Aromes I expect even more estery explosion.

Farbe: Bernstein Geruch: Sahnig, Toffee, Schokolade, Rosinen, Datteln, Rotweinschorle süß. Geschmack: Cremig, vollmundig, würzig und lecker. Toffee, Schokolade, Datteln. Abgang: Lang Cremig, würzig schokoladig.

Beautiful color. The red wine cask is very profound and fits the rum well - but it lacks the grand arome character, which is a pity. Fruity and creamy, sips well for it's abv.

0,2% Unterschied zum anderen RdL Fass und dennoch so ein riesen Unterschied aromatisch im Glas. Hier sind eher zitrusmarmelade, Ananas chutney, dunkle Schokolade, Kaffee, Vanille, Zimt und mehr Eichenfass zu finden, das Rotwein finish ist auch eher im Hintergrund. Der andere gefällt mir deutlich besser im Direktvergleich da er mehr wie ein grand Arome schmeckt. Dieser ist eher ein traditionelle für mich...

Weird degustation journey: borderline unpleasant nose, quite weak, alcohol and underlying decaying smell. Very good attack: Orange and lively but quickly turns to burnt caramel and wood. Longish finale but not super interesting. Great to sample. Would not buy a bottle

Light nose Very pleasant on entry, with pep (cola? orange?). Moves on to caramel, then gives way to bitterness (white citrus, burnt caramel). Burnt caramel finish, a little too bitter for me.

I can't detect a Grand Arome profile here. The red wine cask is well integrated. But overall, I don't really know what to do with this rum. It's not a bad rum.
