CDI Caroni Trinidad 1993

Here's the twist: this 22-year Caroni doesn't taste much like Caroni. Several tasters went looking for the classic tar and diesel and found a fruity, citrus-forward, lightly peppery pour instead — "guter Rum, schlechter Caroni" as one put it. There's dark chocolate, plum and cherry, a metallic edge and some tar, but at 48% many feel it's diluted and short.

The community says
  • Fruity, citrus nose
  • Plum and chocolate
  • But: Feels diluted

How does CDI Caroni Trinidad 1993 taste?

Aggregated from 21 community reviews.

Fruity, light Caroni that lacks Caroni Divisive. A few enjoy the fruity, chocolate-and-plum profile, but most Caroni fans find it too light, diluted and short — closer to an Angostura than a real Caroni.

This is a very rare bottle and there is a reason why. This rum is a typical Caroni from the nose to the finish. The nose is velvety with tropical fruits and camphor, some barrel with the typical polish and tar as well. The palate is well balanced with plum and cherries in the foreground and smoky barrel and ester to it. The finish is long and persistent with plum and spices. Price to quality is very good.

Hardly typical Caroni flavors present. Tastes more like an Angostura. Disappointing bottling from Compagnie des Indes.

Unfortunately for me an absolute flop. Tastes more like an Angostura rum with 1% caroni times obliquely viewed. Unfortunately very weak and quickly gone. Since the felicite with only 40% can even more....

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

À part le nez et ce côté métallique.. On est très loin des standards habituels de caroni

In short: good rum, bad Caroni. Little to no typical notes, but an enormous sweetness and fruitiness. On the palate, additionally a peppery spiciness. Overall, a good rum, but the name brings it into spheres in terms of price, which it does not live up to. Easy to drink or put another way, perhaps a little too much diluted.

Caroni

Avg Rating 8.8/10 over 610 Rums

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
