04.10.2025 Retasting at the Nobilis Warehouse Tasting #3 -------- A very nice and fruity release. Great balance between the roasted wood and fruits complimented with spices and light chocolate. I liked the smoky wood and fruit/pastry mix on the finish.

Day 17 of the Samples de Luxe calendar and tasted again a year and a half later. Explosion on the nose, with varnish, overripe tropical fruit, funkiness and a kind of sweetness that calms things down. The alcohol attacks hard, but immediately the aromas fill the mouth. A touch of solvents, a nice bitterness and a touch of plum. The finish is rather long, and you can feel the almost 30 years of ageing! The wood remains relatively discreet but present. The empty glass adds a discreet rubbery touch. A very fine rum. To be tasted again with a little oxidation. My money was on Habitation Velier's LROK 67%.

It causes a real alarm in the glass. You are almost overwhelmed by glue, solvents and varnish as soon as you put your nose over the glass. Despite this - or perhaps because of it - you want to keep smelling, as the situation gradually eases a little and other aromas come to the fore. In the mouth - contrary to expectations - the fruity notes dominate in the form of sweet pineapple, banana and mango. I really like it! For me, on a par with the Rumclub Treasure Cask C<>H. 2nd tasting: I simply love this rum. From the nose to the finish. An explosion of flavor on the palate.

Edit: found another 5cl sample and tried it as a mixer. Bomb!!! Upgraded rating. In a spontaneous comparison, there were a few candidates from 1993 in the mix today. First off, there was no real loser, all on a very high level. In the end, it's just personal nuances that could differ on another day. My personal ranking would be 1. RX12618 2. RX12648 3. RX11797 4. RX11400

On aeration, it becomes sour, lemon peel arises, molasses is vegetal, grassy with hay, sweet with honeycomb, anise and allspice join, some rubber. 8,9:On the palate, the attack is intense with medicinal notes like esters, glue, solvents, fruity with tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, mango, red and citrus fruits, sour, barrel impact is obvious, the wood is toasted with pastry, meaty, smoky, spicy with allspice, burnt, as molasses is vegetal, briny, sweet with honey, peppery. 8,8:The finish is long, dry&tannic, slightly mineral, medicinal with esters, rubber, fruity with tropical, citrus fruits, hints of plum, barrel impact is obvious with toasted oak notes like burnt sugar, pastry, fruitcake, smoky, spicy, burnt with bacon, molasses is vegetal, grassy with hay. Classic profile, slightly smoky, more on the sour side, although without completely overturning. Unfortunately, this dominance of acidity and barrel influences is already somewhat at the expense of complexity.

A fine example of Hampden aged on the Old Continent. The nose is extremely fruity, like a true basket of tropical fruits (banana, pineapple, mango, papaya), red fruits (cherry) and citrus (lime, orange) that perfumes the nostrils. Medicinal notes are concentrated and very well integrated into the whole. Notes of oak, vanilla, spices, brine and olive intertwine for a very aromatic blend. The empty glass leaves an impression of harlequin candy. A nose that combines power and elegance. The attack on the palate is frank and direct, with very sensual flavors of tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, banana), lemon and marmalade, followed by warm spices like cinnamon and pepper, then accompanied by much drier smoky and woody notes. The pastry and gourmand side coats the palate with its heaviness. The alcohol is well integrated. The aromas tend to fade slightly at the end of the mouth. An intense pleasure but slightly too short. The finish is very long, dry and spicy, even empyreumatic with very heavy smoky notes. The heaviness intensifies on exotic fruits, citrus and medicinal notes, all quickly caught up by a touch of leather, pastry, mineral notes and an almost astringent woodiness. A very nice continental Hampden overall, which perhaps lacks a bit of depth compared to its 1990 counterpart.

This is a 1993 that does not convince me 100%! The acidity is predominant, it lacks complexity, marzipan and pastry are only perceptible in the background. Barrel influence is also present... It definitely can't keep up with the other 93s

Delicious. Heavy with lots of fruit and acidity. Wood pleasant with leather, something almond-like as in macarons. Also something reminds me of printer's ink or rather matrices.

Wow it is so devastating on the nose with solvents, esters and yellow-fleshed fruit dominating, all wrapped in oak and a slight alcoholic warmth that reveals itself as peppery. On the retronasal olfaction a slight herbaceous note emerges adding a new push. On the palate lemon and pineapple dominate along with the alcoholic warmth that comes out as solvents and is immediately softened by the peppery and the slight general sugary sweetness with a bit of vanilla. All softened by the barrel which closes the sip with notes of dark chocolate and burnt. The finish is medium-high intensity and the fruit returns powerfully, from pineapple and lemon giving nuances of plum, with a mineral touch. It closes with burnt notes and wild berries in a breath of smoke.

At first overwhelmed by lacquer and solvents, these soften after a few minutes and make way for tropical fruits, especially pineapple and mango, which then also dominate on the palate. On the palate also pastry and burnt barrel, but like the alcohol perfectly integrated. A rum close to top class!

Hampden C<>H 1993 – 57.8% A legendary vintage, in the line of the Samaroli 1993. Aged 28 years (mainly in Scotland), bottled at 57.8%, only 187 bottles produced. Mark C<>H, located between HGML and DOK, in other words a High Esters Rum of anthology quality. Bottling 100% Salon du Rhum, from selection to design — a true artisan passionate work led by Vincent and his team. Nose: explosive, fruity, complex, with a controlled power. That “glue/solvent” touch filling the room, pure happiness! Palate: first astringent, then you dive into a universe of caramelized pineapple, olive and basil. A real cake of ripe tropical fruits. Finish: long, warm, on grilled pineapple with a slight bitterness. A Jamaican killer, no surprise. Thanks David for sharing!

Similar level to the Whisky Jury bottling, but even more acidity and astringency. Because of that, the 1993 won’t be my favorite vintage. Still, it’s a good bottling with nice fruity notes.

... Hampden, legendary Jamaican distillery, which besides rum also produces alcohol for perfumes. In all rums from this distillery you can feel wild esters, after which your whole body soaks in the scent of yellow tropical fruit - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the rums you "must try before you die".

I expected something more, especially that funkier character, but all in all it’s very balanced on the nose while less so on the palate. In the glass it shows a pale gold color and is quite viscous. Very fragrant, smells of very ripe fruit and the alcohol is quite integrated, but if you sniff for a long time that acidic note always comes back and becomes very dominant, overall it’s pleasant. On the palate the fruit is very noticeable and the alcohol is quite pushed and like on the nose, the acidic note from citrus is very present! The finish is quite good but not too long. Let’s say not the usual Hampden, very different from the usual, distinguishable, a good dram in my humble personal opinion and it’s not too heavy to drink, you can drink it often even though the esters are noticeable and quite a lot but everything is very integrated. Obviously the opinion remains personal and varies with tastes and palates.

I was looking forward to wake you up with a 9.x rating via Push notification, but no. It is good, yes, but also pretty chaotic and not really balanced. Too much tannins, strange sour grassy notes that remind me of a cowshed (hay + cow dung), vanilla and some tropical fruits followed by…the end of this review. But the alcohol is integrated really good.

Nose: smoky / peaty with a vinegary type, barbecue sauce. Also a bit iodized. We keep the Hampden side with exotic fruits and wood. Palate: explosion of aroma, well balanced. Toasted Hampden and woody side that comes after the aroma explosion. Overall fresher. A bit too "light" and calibrated (which is usually positive to get out of Jamaican exuberance but here it's a tad too much). A little vinegary side, like vinegar pepper / veggie chili but I read it. Very peculiar, more different than what you expect when drinking a Hampden although the framework remains there. In any case very evolving and changing with aeration. Long finish.

Length, balance and impressive complexity but lacks the exuberance of younger Hampdens. Still magnificent. Second tasting allows me to appreciate it better because I prefer balance to exuberance.
