Sour cherry, sherry and a whiff of glue lead here, with grassy sugarcane and dark caramel underneath. The Oloroso cask does a lot of the talking — several tasters find it softens the raw Sajous funk, and a few wish it hadn't. At cask strength the heat needs a few minutes to settle. One reviewer called it a "really nice daily driver," others just enjoyed the cherry-and-sherry combination.

Have 2 samples of this, so there will be 2 sessions. First impression: the smell immediately filled the room, one could recognize the Clairin, but in a muted intensity I have yet to find the Sherry component. The taste is quite hot and burning, but not unpleasant.

31.10.2025 Retasting at Tom's wedding. ------- This one was hidden on a top shelf and I was the first one asking for it at the Tiki bar in question. The nose is fruity with sugarcane, nuts and vanilla trailed by grass. The palate is also fruity with lots of cane, wood and spices trailed by grass and tea and a hint of sherry. The finish is long and woody with sugarcane, grass, tea and dried fruits.

the white rums from Hait/Clairini taste very good. if you let this good base mature in a cask, it automatically becomes a masterpiece. you would think so, but it's not like that. in fact, a lot is lost in the cask and a lot is gained. very drinkable with a cherry aroma that I like.

I had heard this rum when it was first released and it had made a decent impression on me, but now with the open bottle at home I must say that it really has something that captures me! A perfect integration between the sajous that retains its authentic flavors and the sherry cask that enriches it with black cherries, cream and meringues!

I am a fan of all unaged Clairins and this is my first aged expression. So nothing to compare to. But i am – unlike other reviewers – not disappointed. Yes, in the smell is not much clairin left and the oloroso cask clearly takes the center spot. But this is ok for me. I also really enjoyed the taste where there is enough sajous left and works really nicely together with cherry, black cassis and dried plum as well as sherry. Really loved this. Got 2 bottles. Update: i am correcting this score down by a point due to more tasting experiences but also after a new side by side tasting with the other release aged in whisky and rum casks catching up in my mind.

Doesn't quite come close to its sister bottling at 50.1%, as the additional alcohol content works to the detriment of balance in a direct comparison.

Update: Good but not great. Most conspicuously it lacks depth. Taste and alcohol integration is fine but I must agree with what someone said that it reminds you of a surface-only rum from Panama. I am a sucker for a beautiful bottle though and I just love how this one looks. Presents itself really well on the table. Perhaps that actually encapsulates this rum, great exteriors but not much in the way of layers. Too demanding to be a true easy sipper but not rich or deep enough to sit as a true tasting rum. That being said it’s not a bad rum. A tragic hero of sorts with its profile that lacks a home.

8,6:On the nose, the first impression we get is sherry forward, with an earthy funk in the background.There are estery tropical fruits with overripe banana, dried fruits with apricots, raisins, vegetal notes with an olive, some glue.The wood is roasted and spicy with baking spices, vanilla, fruit cake, complex and inviting. On aeration, the sugarcane is juicy, grassy and waxy. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is tasty like a bag of sweets with dark fruit caramel sauce. There are strong sherry notes with red fruits, berries, dried fruits like raisins, prunes, some tropical with banana, pineapple.The sugarcane is vegetal, mineral with the olive, black tea.There's even a little bit of Sajous late on the finish.Excellent sherry aged rum, and fun zesty sajous funk.The wood is charred, spicy with vanilla, cinnamon.Our tasting buds are enjoying the balance and complexity in one.... 8,5:The finish is long, a bit bitter, dry, but tasty with dried fruits, berries, vegetal, waxy, mineral sugarcane with some tea, roasted, spicy wood with green pepper... Like super rum. Very fruity nose, red fruits such as cherries are particularly recognizable here. You can smell it from a meter away. Also red fruits, cherry and sherry on the palate, but wood is also recognizable.

The sherry cask (Oloroso) is very dominant, almost a little too much, as it rather suppresses the typical fresh Clairin notes. On the nose I have red fruits (especially sour cherry), fig, burnt sugar, sweet baking spices and olive. Clove, tea and cherry on the palate. Spices and vegetal notes on the finish.

The Oloroso cask has done a great job, but I find both on the nose and on the palate the Clairin comes through clearly, with the nose overall having more of the sherry cask.Overall a good to very good rum. However, I like both "sherry bombs" and the unaged Clairin profile, but neither are my favorites, either alone or in combination. Quite positive I find the alcohol integration and uniqueness.

I found this rum very intense and well marked by the sherry cask. A pleasantly fruity nose, reminiscent of black cherry, with the presence of cane and a strong barrel and a hint of wine. The palate is intense and lively on the attack, but the fruitiness quickly returns with burnt sugar and vegetal notes. The finish is soft and not very persistent, which contrasts with the power of this rum.

It feels a little bit unusual for me to taste and give impressions on a rum that hasn’t yet been reviewed here on RumX..I’ll definitely come back a second time and adjust my thoughts, but here’s my first, quick, review. The nose has gotten the biggest influence from the ex-Oloroso casks, with red fruits (I get bitter cherries upfront, possibly figs), and a sweeter sugary note, almost like honey but not so strong. Then, the true Clairin essence starts to coming through, with grassy flavors, raw cane, a fainted hint of green olives. What was a lime peel note i used to get from the unaged Sajous, now seems to me more like chamomile. The palate is an whole other story: the fierce soul of Haiti is still there (sugarcane, grass, lime peel) maybe a little bit softened by those red cherries.

Surprisingly a lot of glue on the nose, lots of sherry and also grassy hints. Reminds me a bit of the Hampden Pagos. On the palate nice and creamy with plenty of sherry, agricole-typical aromas and fruity notes. Slightly sour.

For my taste, this old clairin is too marked by the barrel, with red fruit and sweetness dominating the nose on the first part of the palate. The profile of the clairins is too broken for me, too round. The balance of the old Vaval and Casimir is much better and more representative of what this terroir has to offer.

The Oloroso sherry cask has enhanced many rums in a creamy and fruity way. This is also true for this rum from Haiti. Besides nice fruit and agricole tones, the creamy caramel note points to the Oloroso cask. Spices and wood are present. On the palate, it is noticeably spicy with wood, sherry, dried fruits, and caramel again. Pleasantly warm and even a bit funky is present. The vegetal notes follow and lead into tea and herbs. The medium-long finish shows a nice spiciness again with sherry, tea, and cask notes. Interesting roasted aromas, as tasted on the palate, linger. An exciting product and the price-performance ratio is also okay. Thanks to Leo for the sample.

On the nose I find the mix of red fruit sherry aromas and vegetal notes of the sugarcane distillate a bit unusual, but as soon as the first drop enters the mouth, the individual components come together into a harmonious whole, with the sherry casks setting the tone.

Colorful rum with strong notes from the barrel. It has the typical wildness of the clairins, which is refreshing. Well balanced with exciting aromas, it has the fruity side and spices aswell, but misses some more depth.

On the nose, it's explosive. Sour cherry, candied citrus zest, sweetness of a local cane soaked in sunshine. On the palate, old cherry in grandmother's eau de vie, on the kirsch. Overcooked caramel. A gunpowder side at the finish. Many markers more or less present for a 4-year-old, thanks to full tropical. Atypical product suitable for a tasting spread out to make the transition between agricoles (Madeira why not) and more fruity molasses (Belize, Mauritius, Jamaica).

The actual smell of the unaged Sajous is almost completely overlaid by the sherry. The floral, herbal notes are very much in the background. The sour note is still the most tangible of the original. Flavor-wise, there is a bit more of the actual sajous, complemented by spice, wood and fruit from the sherry. In the finish then licorice and hay.Alcohol is somewhat tamed, could nevertheless be a bit better integrated. I like quite well, but not quite on the level of the 22 months Clairins from the Mount Gay cask.

If You are a sherrybomb guy. Thats a product for you. Personally, i love this rum. 4 years in sherry cask provided great red fruit, cherry-like flavours which are very scrumptious. On the other hand. Agricoles and Haitian rums tend to lose flavour to the detriment of casks. The funky goodies dissapear when barrels come into the game. If You buy a Haitian rum, You expect to be provided with plenty of wild and floral notes. In this case, those notes are well hidden, which is a big no no in terms of such key factor. However, that is a marvellous product that is very enjoyable. Give it a try, but dont expect lots of funk.

Bonus round. Good to drink but much of the Clairin character has unfortunately remained in the sherry cask which you only notice on the palate. Remains a good sipper.

Interesting bottling. The oloroso cask clearly has the say on the nose, the typical Clairin aromas are only very subtle. In the mouth, the sherry also dominates at first, but over time this recedes in favor of sugar cane juice aromas. Very pleasant to drink, even if the typical Clairin notes are kept in check by the cask. The finish is long, woody and somewhat bitter/astringent. All in all, a tasty bottling that should appeal to all those who find the white-aged Clairins "over the top".

Tasted as the 5th in the Clairin session: cherry nose. However, somewhat weak. But nice fruity taste. Also the cherries but with a slight medicinal touch. Finish however a bit short. Corrected upwards by 0.3 in the night tasting.

Among my favorite vieux sajous. An interesting and versatile bottle. It drinks with disarming ease but is at the same time a complex rum. Aging in ex-sherry casks hasn't made it too sweet. Recommended drink!

On the nose immediately a very nice, spicy sweetness consisting of vanilla, toffee, butter and fruity notes like mirabelle jam. The wood is only noticeable in the background, almost overwhelmed by the wonderful fruity sweetness, which fits perfectly. On the palate then much more sour, fruity and more wood. Unfortunately, the alcohol is not so well integrated but supports the spiciness. Then a unique earthy note appears, reminiscent of freshly pulled roots with old milk. The medium-long finish is very vegetal with wood and tea.

Fantastic Clairin. I find it almost magical how well the cask elevates the Clairin to a new level. While the Sajous in its pure form is an acquired taste, this is simply wonderful. Perfect combination of spice, wood, the fruitiness from the wine and some freshness. Very happy about this bottle!

On the nose , my first impression a hit of varnish and very intense sherry . On the pallet: wood , cinnamon, cherry, olive then finish nutmeg with mineral . That Rhum for me very sweetness and interesting ;)

On the nose some raisins, fresh sugarcane with dark brown sugar. Also sherry and dark wood notes as well as some glue, very complex and harmonious. On the palate very intense, similar to the smell, the roasted notes turn more into cocoa in taste. The taste of intense brown cane sugar lingers in the mouth for some time. Very successful, for me it got a bit better/rounder after the bottle was open for a while.

Perfect, grassy, taste woody notes up perfectly balanced with sherry and grassy notes. Wonderful masterclass with Daniele Biondi. It was great to try to whole range. The story of Clairin and Haiti 🇭🇹 is absolutely amazing. It is a privilege to be able to try such a pure product at home.

This is so unlike any of its relatives. And honestly a bit disappointing. It is by no means bad. But it tastes more akin to a sweet Panama rum than to anything clairin. I am sure it will have it fans but I am not one of them...
