Jack Tar Caroni Le Soleil 1997
Caroni die-hards are the crowd here: this 1997 Jack Tar bottling piles on the classic tar, leather and menthol, but it's the extra fruit that wins people over — pineapple, strawberry, orange peel. Give it time in the glass; the nose starts quiet then opens up. At 63.8% it drinks "surprisingly soft" for the strength, but the palate stays sharp and full-on.

A rum tasted at the Spirits Museum. A rather quiet nose, but the aromas are there, initially smoky, with lots of wood and tar. Then fruit, especially pineapple, comes through. The palate entry is surprisingly soft, given the ABV above 60%, a little closed at first, then everything opens up. Very fruity for a 1997 and, above all, the machine shop never takes over. The finish is wonderfully long, marked by tar, rich and balanced. A very fine representative of the vintage.

I like this one better right away than the La Lune, you immediately notice more power and especially fruit. A rather calm nose, but the aromas are there, initially smoky, lots of wood and tar. Then the fruits shine through. The entry on the mouth is surprisingly soft considering the ABV of over 60%, initially a bit closed, then everything opens up. Very fruity with nice yellow and berry fruits.

This Caroni bottling needs time to air out in the glass. Initially, the notes are very light on the nose, but after a while in the glass, the fruity notes with a hint of leather and garage "dirt" emerge. On the palate, this is so good! Close your eyes and savor it. A wonderfully fruity start, with notes of pineapple and strawberries coming through beautifully. Leather, menthol, and the typical dirty notes also come through well. A wonderfully long, warm finish.

From the first sniff I like this Caroni better than its co-release La Lune. The typical HTR markers are present, as well as tropical fruits and light menthol. This combo just suits me better due to the higher fruit content.

A very nice representative of the 97 Caroni bottlings. Despite the alcohol content of over 60%, this one is quite integrated. Beautiful continental HTR markers as expected were fulfilled. All in all very good.

#7431 11.10.2026 Relaxing with some samples while listening to some nice Trance on Spotify. Nice caroni with an OK price tag in my mind. Needs time in the glass to open up properly. Raosted wood, fruits, spice, leather, smoke, diesel, caramel, molasses, tar, rubber, mint, chocolate, tobacco.

Crosstasting 1997 Caronis from continental storage: Very round, well-balanced Caroni. Great alcohol integration, lots of HTR aromas with oak, tar, rubber and dark spices. Round, full-bodied, drinkable. A very good representative of the vintage.

A lot of smoke, few Caroni left

Nice chocolate and mild nose is in contrast with a heavy taste with leather notes. Definitely for advanced audience.

Rooty, woody tones, along with medicinal flavors. Shorter but pleasant finish.

Vintage 1997. With 8.7 out of 10, it's among the better ones I've had in my glass.

Review by Matej
Another day another exceptional sample. The aroma of this sample is more fruity, with orange peel. The aroma of tobacco, wood, herbs and various medicinal aromas prevails here. In my opinion La Lune had better aroma. The taste is much more sharper than in the case of La Luna. There is a hint of vanilla, but the dominant flavors are fruit, mint, tar and strong cigar smoke. The finish is relatively long, with tobacco, herbs and spices predominating. Another great sample that will please the more experienced person, but if I have to choose, I would choose La Lune.
