Mount Gay Rumclub Private Selection Ed. 23 BMMG 2000
Most tasters flag it early: blind, almost nobody pegs this as Mount Gay or even Barbados. The nose is the star — pineapple, marzipan, yellow orchard fruit, a touch of glue and smoke. On the palate the oak and spice take over, drier and more tannic, with smoky wood, chocolate and leather trailing. A pot-still Barbados that goes its own way, and most people are glad it does.

From community reviews · summarized with AI
Atypical, fruity pot-still Barbados, dry oak finish Widely liked and a fair deal — an atypical, fruit-forward Mount Gay most rate well. A few find the palate too woody and dry after that fantastic nose.

This is a very atypical but delicious Rum from Mount Gay🤤Blind you’ll never say this is a MG 😅 The alcohol is integrated well. Some atypical tastes in mouth and finish with some notes of licorice, tobacco and a nice taste of the oak barrel. It‘s an awesome everyday rum with a good price per value ratio. I see this one slightly behind the 2000 MG from S.B.S Update: Found some nice licorice and rubber notes 😜 The second sip was a lot better, more impressive. By far the best from mount gay🤤🤤 enjoyed it a lot

Wow, this Barbados Rumclub really has a fantastic nose. Very, very fruity, especially banana and pineapple are recognizable. On the palate, I don't like it as much. Unfortunately, the alcohol dominates here.
Review by Christoph
A strong smokiness that fades with time and gives way to pineapple and lychee, which can also be found in the taste together with some chocolate. The whole thing is not Hampden Funky, but it is still exceptional in its own way. The finish is again completely different, leathery and nutty with some tobacco. Dry leather remains on the palate for a long time.
Review by Johannes
I blindly guessed it to be Clarendon. It has a lot of bitter almond and marzipan in the taste. But if you know it, it is of course a typical Mount Gay. PLV very good!

We tasted four Mount Gay 2000 releases at the Rum-X Community Tasting. The tasting was very entertaining, but the rums only made a small contribution. Overall, the rums were very similar, the differences lie in the nuances. Personally, I don't like the profile that much, as the fruit is simply missing. Even in the post-tasting, it is difficult to perceive new nuances in the fourth. Leading notes: banana and cereal (keyword: banana wheat 🤫), peach and peach iced tea are also new. In terms of taste, the rum club is venturing into new realms. It is significantly fruitier but also more acidic: pineapple and various citrus fruits, almost Jamaican. The floral notes remain in the background. The finish is not particularly exciting - the acidity almost takes over.

Nice funky nose with glue, tobacco, herbs, lots of barrel and slightly smoky and subtle hints of unripe pineapple and fermented yellow fruit. The taste is then quite woody, dry, bitter, peppery and very astringent and tannic. Also tobacco, dried fig and slightly nutty. Overall, I find it too woody and smoky and not particularly pleasant to drink. It also lacks any fruit... I was hoping for more, I'm glad I only took a sample...
Review by MarcT
Usually I find Mount Gay quite dry and spicy, but this is quite enjoyable. I had this as a comparison of different bottlings of this Marque, and found this to be the best variant, albeit by a small margin only.
Review by tojo
A rather atypical Barbados representative. In addition to fruity notes on the nose, there is also smoke, wood and a sweetness reminiscent of marzipan. The palate then turns back to the fruit notes with orange, mandarin and yellow fruits. Leather and barrel on the finish. I like it! 👍
Review by Thunderbird
This is a very different MG.. it clearly stands out from the usual... whether I like it... I'm still struggling with myself... Regardless of the clearly fruitier note on the nose and the woody smoky aroma on the palate, there is a scent that somehow reminds me of furniture wax! To really be sure, it requires another tasting! Maybe also in a cocktail.

A beautiful interplay of yellow fruit (mirabelle plum), wooden barrel and spices on the nose. This continues on the palate: toasty, spicy notes alternate with candied fruit and chocolate. The finish is spicy and rather dry.
Review by Alexander Rasch
A very successful Mount Gay and a nice old Barbados rum. I have a soft spot for Mount Gay and am therefore fully satisfied. Especially the nose is a treat. Very different from the Last Wards and therefore a great addition.

05.04.2024 Mount Gay Extreme Rare online tasting mit Dirk. Retasting and I still think this is a pretty good release. Price to quality is very good in my mind. ----------------------- Typical barbados rum from nose to finish. Price to quality is very good. The nose is fruity and has light smoky wood to it and some vanilla after resting. The palate is typical Barbados with lots of fruit and smoky wood, vanilla and chocolate is trailing. The chocolate gets more obvious once the glass is empty and has been standing for a while. The rum draws nice curtains in the glass. The finish is long and warm with smoky wood and tropical fruits.

Not bad, but personally a bit too one-dimensional and bitter with too prominent alcohol.

Tasted as a 5cl sample. Very atypical nose for Mount Gay and Barbados in general. Pineapple, yellow stone fruit, mirabelle plum, marzipan, vanilla, spices, wood and subtly smoky. A great nose that I would never have attributed to Barbados. In terms of taste, it is a little more in the direction of Barbados. The pineapple aroma is special here. Very mild, with a nice heavy consistency and a long finish. A top rum that I can't criticize. So far my favorite rum from Barbados.

This rum was also featured in the Rare Tasting with Dirk from RumDepot. It has a slight smoky note, nutty, almonds, plus quite some fruits, plus a leathery note. If I had tasted this blind, I would never have guessed Barbados.

Goes down quite smoothly. Personally a bit sharp for 54 percent.

Nose: I would definitely describe it as dirty. Fruity and sweetish, but also smoky and reminiscent of plastic. The fruit is something between green apple and floury papaya, the sweetness something between honey, burnt sugar and marzipan. There is also some cookie dough. I like it overall. Palate: strong, spicy, a little fruity. Salty and bitter at first. Clearly resinous and rooty with a slight hint of mint. Also peppery with cardamom. The light fruitiness is difficult for me to discern, perhaps in the direction of grapefruit peel? There is some vanilla and leather at the back. Remains salty and bitter in the finish, with freshly cut branches at the very back. Nice nose, but too bitter on the palate for me.

First of all, I have to say that I am neither a big Barbados fan nor much less a Mount Gay fan. Especially the 2000s Mount Gays seem to be a special vintage that holds some good bottlings. Unfortunately, I have to say that this new Spirit of Rum is rather not one of them. While the quite intense nose with aromas of yellow fruits, a spicy barrel note and a hint of sweet marzipan is enticing, the palate disappoints me a bit. Surprisingly smoky, with too much barrel for my taste, leaving little room for typical Barbados aromas. That doesn't have to be a bad thing, but in this case, it's at least nothing particularly good. A vegetal, maybe vegetable note remains present until the finish makes room with dry notes.
Review by HenryL
As in comparable bottlings, here too a glue note on the nose. Compared to that, this one is a bit sweeter with ripe yellow fruits and almost a toffee note. The unripe banana can also be found here. The nose is overall super complex and fun! On the palate, unlike the Rum Cask, fruity with a sour, not ripe pineapple. The similarity to whisky is also present here. Besides the fruit notes, wood and spices also dominate. The finish is very tannin-heavy, not really my thing.
Review by Righrum
A kind of a thin rum. Decent enough not to be disappointed completely, but anyway not the best Mount Gay 2000. The taste, both nose and palate, are dominated by almond and almond sweet paste (Sicilia's calling), which is amazing but there's not so much more in here. Alcool is not well integrated, and the aftertaste is pretty short and thin.
Review by DomM
Out of a small cross tasting: Rum Mercenary is the most lifely with some floral notes while the other three have a more similar profile. Rum Cask is very well balanced an approchable. RumClub feels the most intense with some funky notes. The Duchess is the most elegant out of the bunch and my personal winner.

I had this sample in my stash for a long time 😁 A surprise with the super fruity profile, I really didn't expect that. It's a really pleasant rum, I liked it a lot.
Review by Basti
Just from the nose, I'd probably blindly classify it more towards Guyana PM. Also surprisingly dry and bitter on the palate. Not necessarily what you know or expect from MG, but still exciting.
Review by Mirco
A well-balanced rum that convinces with a pleasant mix of fruit, spice, and light wood notes. Ripe yellow fruits, mild vanilla, and subtle herbal tones form a harmonious overall picture. No outlier upwards or downwards, but exactly that makes it a very accessible and successful representative of its kind. Feels round and balanced without being boring.

I love this honey note - reminds me personally strongly of Rockley 1986Toll balanced and top PLV

Nose mild, reserved, light rum, later caramel; tongue complex, slightly sharp, lots to taste, exciting, okay.
Review by Martin Augustin
For me a recognizable, although not a typical representative from Barbados. Clear notes of marzipan and vanilla. Very fruity representative for its origin. Alcohol is well integrated. Good sipper with few edges and corners.
Review by Gil Firth
Bottle. Super fruity and tasty. Mount Gay makes great rum. Here it's quite an inactive barrel choice. Lots of fruit. Chocolate. Emphasis on banana and tropical notes. Also peach. In my opinion a very surprising and tasty release. Also has complexity, it changes a lot on the way up from chocolate to full of dried fruits and oranges.

Lakava vune, bad taste. Alcohol not well integrated.

A punchy mount gay on crack. Had some Jamaica funkiness in the nose the gave some Clarendon vibes and it has a surprising intensity. Knowing it's Barbadian heritage you recognize a lot of the typical flavours
