Here's the surprise: this continentally aged '98 Caroni carries more sweetness and red fruit than the usual tar-and-rubber assault. Dark chocolate, dried fruit and vanilla ride alongside the classic rubber and tar, with a touch of strawberry a few tasters caught. Long, layered finish. The one recurring gripe is alcohol integration — several notice a bit of heat that isn't perfectly tucked in.

Edit: had it again in the glass yesterday, in contrast to the 98 No Smoking, it loses ground and here the alcohol is suboptimally integrated in comparison. For me on the GRF, in contrast to the 1998 Caroni from Rum Artesanal, by far the better of the two. Although it is again only a continental 98 Caroni, from memory I find this one of the best of the vintage in its group. And for 350€, I think it's a fair price.

On aeration, tropical and candied fruits arise, molasses is earthy with tobacco, dark with licorice, roasted nuts, cappuccino, spicy allspice join. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is intense, industrial with burnt rubber and tar, medicinal with menthol, later petrol, varnish, some iodine, oily, fruity with citrus, yellow fruits, raisins and cherry hints, fermented, dairy hints join, roasted wood notes like dark chocolate, caramel, cocoa, sweet, spicy with allspice, vanilla and black pepper join, molasses is dark with licorice, vegetal, slightly herbaceous. 8,9:The finish is long, dry&tannic, with toasted oak notes like caramel, cappuccino, chocolate, nuts, smoky, meaty, spicy with clove, vanilla, peppery, industrial and medicinal, fruity with dried, citrus fruits, slightly fermented dairy hints, molasses is dark with licorice, black tea, earthy..

#5405 18.06.2025 Enjoying a few samples after work while relaxing in front of the telly 😊 Nose Wood, light roasted, fruity, light nutts, light vegetal, dried fruit, faint citrus, faint chocolate. Palate Oily, balanced, fruity, wood, faint cherry, faint floral, spice, light dried fruit, light nutts, light coffee. Finish Long, wood, light roasted, light caramel, light dried fruit, light earthy, faint smoke. Empty glass Light smoke, vanilla, light caramel, raisin, faint cherry, light chocolate. Needs to rest for a while to really open up. Very well balanced Caroni in my mind and not the traditional tar and rubber partial dominance. German Rum Fest 2024 sample.

Beautiful 1998 with a typical vintage profile, aromatically diverse. In addition to the intense barrel, spice and HTR notes, this release also has a pleasant sweetness. The rum's only fault is the somewhat pungent note on the palate, which points to less than perfect alcohol integration. Overall, however, on a high level and a really good 1998 Caroni.

Rum Friendly Club, advent calendar, day 24. A Caroni nose, rich and dirty, fruity and woody, with a heady note of dark chocolate almost on top of the classic tar and rubber combo. The palate keeps this balance with all the aromas from the nose and adds dried fruits. The finish is endless while maintaining all the aromas in balance until the end. A very beautiful rum here.

Pleasantly technically smooth Caroni just how I want it to taste, if they write the year 1998. Pleasantly technical, both on the nose and on the palate. Nothing bothers me there, and if I compare it with other pieces that appear from this year, it's one of the better ones.

First of all, many thanks to Zabo for the sample! Great rum, a really nice experience. It brings what you expect from it: rubber, dirt, dark influences. Along with red fruits, light vanilla notes in the finish, and a bit of sharpness from the alcohol that isn't perfectly integrated. But you do want to get hit in the face when you drink Caroni – that's the fun part. Goes on the wish list!

A fantastic Caroni from 1998. But it's a lighter, softer version than I'm used to. A bit sweeter, with more vanilla notes, a touch of strawberry, red fruit, and a touch of typical rubber. But also strong alcoholic notes, which are a bit too prominent for my taste. The flavor lingers nicely.

Tasted a continentally aged '98 Caroni at Rum Love Festival Wroclaw 2024. Intense nose of tar, rubber, dark chocolate, and dried fruits. Palate has rubber, wood, vanilla and tar, with dried fruits returning in the finish.

Yesterday, I tasted a Caroni for the first time and was not disappointed. I found the famous rubber and tar aromas typical of Caroni and it was very good. Perhaps a little negative note on the integration of alcohol, which doesn't allow it to pass the 9/10 mark, but it's still an excellent rum.

The final sample of the RFC calendar with a "slight" delay. Beautiful slightly dirty nose with a mix of fruits. Taste-wise, just technical enough. The finish is pleasantly vanilla, licorice, of course technical, and at the very end it tastes like Islay whisky.

Nose: Clearly recognizable as Caroni right from the nose: dirty, industrial notes, tar, and dark spice. Along with that come wood, tea, dark fruits, and a bit of vanilla. The rubber note is rather restrained for me, while the tar and spicy side is clearly more present. Palate: Classic Trinidad character with tar, wood, and dark spice. Also dry fruits, some coffee, dark chocolate, and a pleasant, heavy depth. The alcohol is noticeable and not perfectly integrated, but still within limits. Compared to the very top Caronis, I miss a bit of rubber, but the profile remains clear and typically Caroni. Finish: Long, warm, and harmonious. Tea, dry fruits, wood, dark spice, and tar linger for a long time. The slight sweetness in the finish nicely rounds off the rum. Conclusion: A very good, complex, and classic 1998 Caroni with tar, dark spice, wood, and dried fruits. Not as rubbery and brutal as some top Caroni bottlings, but very coherent and pleasant to drink.

Very good rum. The alcohol is, as already described, quite rough. But within limits. At least for me. Nice asphalt and rubber as I like it. Simply wonderful, this dirty vibe. Dried fruit, leather, a hint of chocolate is also there.

Quite a strong dried-fruit character, with a nice leathery touch coming through at the end. Surprisingly light-bodied for a Caroni, maybe because it spent more time aging in Europe, giving it a much cleaner character overall. For me, this is a Caroni I could happily drink anytime!
