People already deep into Savanna's Grand Arôme will know what they're getting into here: a cask-strength Réunion beast full of overripe strawberry, pineapple and banana, with fermented, almost vinegary funk and green olive underneath. One taster nicknamed it a "Caroni-savanna" for its roasted, spicy edge. Intense and a little rustic — several say it needs a long rest in the glass before the 63.9% stops overshadowing the fruit.

Excellent Savanna representative with nice fruit esters, mint tea, heavy and compact sweetness, a bit of olive and wood - a nice bottling with great balance. Excellent.

14.05.2022 Had a nice meet up with some nice rums, good friends and also new rum enthusiasts. Notes Medium dark in colour. Nose Intense, fresh, faint wood, faint smoke, fruity, berries, light pineapple, faint chocolate. Palate Oily, intense, medium spicy, light chocolate, berries, light pineapple, spices, light olive. Finish Long and warm, light olive, light roasted wood, faint salty, light pineapple. Extra note. Needs to rest for a good while or the ABV will overshadow all the nice flavours.

A testosterone-fueled Savanna with high aromatic concentration. The nose is strikingly fruity, with exotic fruits and red berries, but also very ripe and fermented, almost hinting of vinegar. Spicy notes accompany this livelier side, which stings the nostrils. The medicinal aromas are firm and the floral and herbaceous notes a little more present. The alcohol comes out more with the barrel. A rather beastly Savanna that needs quite a bit of aeration. The attack on the palate is quite virulent. A spicy edge emerges at first, then tropical fruit and strawberry lurk in ambush, accompanied by esters. Roasted oak and herbaceous notes (tea) complete a dry, powerful, even slightly rough profile. The reduction on the Grand Étant Sec makes all the difference here. The finish is long, imbued with the fruity notes typical of Grand Arôme (exotic fruit, strawberry) and more roasted, woody and herbaceous notes that lend a certain bitterness. Spices, tannins and medicinal notes are also present in this aromatic melting pot. Compared with Grand Etang Sec, this is a tasty Savanna, clearly more powerful, but which shows to its cost that reduction can be useful in certain cases.

The run has the same barrel number as the Savanna Reunion The Wild Island Edition - Grand étang sec 2006 (RX11969). According to the label, they both came into the barrel on the same day. At first they come across as quite different, but after a while in the glass they become somewhat alike. Nevertheless, the Grand étang sec is slightly better.

Beautiful balanced nose with pleasant sweetness. The sweetness continues on the palate, complemented with strawberry and pineapple. The finish continues harmoniously with a slight honey note.

Cheers to Mirco for curating this tasting set! Looking at the bottlings side by side really has the potential to shift some ratings :) Among the GAs, the RumX bottling came out on top for me, with the Chronicals surpassing Thunderstruck (which surprised me tbh). Overall the profile and with that the individual bottlings has/have so much to offer and explore that I would gladly enjoy a bottle of each contender.

Online tasting organised by Mirco, super interesting tasting! I'm not an expert in Savanna so that was definitely an experience. Seventh one in the tasting, this one is rather peppery, acidic and very fruity. Nice and easy sipping actually.

🎨 Beautiful gold with coppery reflections, thick tears slowly running down the glass. 👃 At first nose, I find lots of ripe tropical fruits, papaya, guava, Goa apple and jujube. A beautiful note of esters embellishes all this. After leaving it aside for a good twenty minutes, this first contact gradually fades and evolves into a nose more focused on the characteristics of an old armagnac from a baco and ugni blanc blend! Wondering, I refer to the technical sheet which specifies aging in cognac casks and finishing in armagnac casks. Cool, I'm not too far off 😅 This aging brings ripe and candied fruits (strawberry, cherry, grape, orange), candied stem (angelica) and Christmas cake spices (cinnamon, star anise, vanilla, nutmeg, ginger). a slightly sweet side on almond and honey nougat. The nose deep in the glass, I find here and there a bit of solvent, a slight menthol veil and a fermented aspect on the famous green olives also well present. A magnificent, evolving, complex nose with a beautiful fruity concentration 🤤 😋 Lively mouth, very intense, warm, spicy, alcohol well present but not "too" disturbing for me. Watch out, there are watts! Retro-olfaction on citrus especially candied orange coated with dark chocolate. Then juicy roasted Victoria pineapple in salted butter, as well as very ripe strawberries sprinkled with sugar, all accompanied by solid esters. There is a taste of cotton candy. Small olive note at the end of the mouth. Mouth quite austere compared to the nose (where the integration of the alcohol was just incredible) but still quite pleasant. ⛳ Very long finish on a mouth coated by robust and spicy wood, bitterness and harshness on orange zest and 95% dark chocolate. I have the sensation of a lit cigar tobacco leaf evolving on different Christmas tea infusions. An empty glass very herbal, lively (like an old sheep cheese), acidic and still brined. NB. A really beautiful grand aroma. Compared directly to the Etang sec, the sun sets here and it becomes noticeably spicier, more complex, and more intense due to the higher alcohol content. It subtly reminds me of a super pimped-up mango lassi with green Kampot pepper, ginger, honey, and lime. Really very tasty and exciting to try compared to the Etang sec. Overall, though, a bit more demanding and rougher in comparison.

Rums from the Savanna distillery are some of my favorites. I recommend everyone try especially the ester-heavy pieces like Grand Arome or HERR. You haven't felt so much fruit in just a few drops of liquid for a long time.

Nose: great aroma as we like it/pineapple/banana/smoky... it's intense and solventy as desired Mouth: smoky/green olive/strawberry candy Finish: long/spicy/bitter I find it good, but not wow. I've already tasted better Grands Arômes from Savanna and without the fuss of this Piton des Neiges. Very happy to have been able to taste it during this Master Class, because I would never have had the chance to taste it otherwise. Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Mirco's brilliant Savanna online blind tasting. Rating from this tasting. Color again light brown amber. The nose on this Sample 7 is very comparable to the first two rums in the lineup. With so many top-notch Savanna bottlings at eye level, the differences are only found in nuances. Here too, a combination of woody spiciness with the Grand Arome ester notes. On the palate, it feels a bit sweeter. Also wonderfully balanced, intense, bold, and yet with perfect drinking flow. Really nice. You just have to admit that the Savanna Grand Arome hype has a well-founded basis. Again, a long aromatic finish that remains complex and tasty on the palate flavors.
