Hampden Rum Sponge No. 11 JMH 1998
Most tasters land in the high-8s here, and the dividing line is one thing: a smoky, almost "smoked pepper / chipotle bbq" note running from nose to finish. Hampden purists call it something genuinely new. Underneath sits the classic glue, grilled pineapple, marzipan and ester kick, with cedar and roasted barrel late. The one repeated gripe: at 62.6%, the alcohol could be better integrated.
- Grilled pineapple funk
- Unusual smoky note
- Layered, complex

How does Hampden Rum Sponge No. 11 JMH 1998 taste?
Aggregated from 11 community reviews.
Smoky, funky Hampden with grilled pineapple Loved as a different, more complex Hampden — that unusual smoky thread wins most people over. The common catch: the high ABV runs a touch hot on the nose for some.

Nose is very nice. It has a lingering smoked pepper / chipotle bbq note which I like very much. This comes alongside classic Hampden notes with pineapple (acidity as well as grilled) and some marzipan. Very nice. Intense yet well balanced on the palate. Smokiness is present again but not dominating. I get some herbal notes alongside Hampden funk with grilled pineapple and tropical fruits.

Delicious continental Hampden with a great smoky note, which goes wonderfully with the pineapple, the fine wood and the cooked fruit with spices. There is also a little spiciness (chili) on the palate, which with the pineapple and smoke really makes you want to barbecue. Alcohol could be better integrated.

FUNKY !

A well-made Hampden without being wow. The alcohol could have been better integrated into the nose.
