Woody and spicy up front, with vanilla and a run of dried fruit — prunes keep coming up — underneath. It's a young Guadeloupe agricole finished in new oak (and, one taster notes, ex-cognac), so the barrel does a lot of the talking. Several find the palate fruitier and livelier than the nose promises. At 60% it's warm but not aggressive; give it a rest in the glass.

This rum from Karukera in in Guadeloupe was in slot #16 in my advent calendar. It was distilled in 2020, then first aged for 8 months in new French oak barrels, then in ex-cognac barrels for 6 months before bottled in 4000 bottles. The nose is round, woody, spicy and fruity with scents of vanilla, cinnamon, orange and a little nutty. At the palate it’s round, woody, fruity, spicy and sweet with flavors of prunes, vanilla, honey and hints of tobacco. The finish is rather long, woody, fruity and spicy with flavors of prunes, vanilla, pepper, burnt sugar and coffee.

Karukera has many great bottlings, this one made me very curious with its high abv. As expected, the rhum strikes with typical agricole aromas. Unfortunately, the alcohol is not perfectly integrated, which is not surprising given the relatively short maturation in the barrel. An Agricole, elegant and at the same time wild with light young wood aromas, accompanied by vanilla.

This Karukera L'expression Brut de fût is a nice surprise. The color is superb and makes you want to start the tasting. The very pleasant nose is woody and spicy with sweet notes. On the palate, you can feel the alcohol degrees. They carry the different aromas beautifully. The rather long finish is woody, spicy and round.

#4649 09.03.2024 relaxing at home with some nice samples from a good friend. Nose Wood, light roasted, plum, dried fruit, spices, sugarcane, floral. Palate Wood, light roasted, spices, intense, medium dry, plum, fruity, faint chocolate, floral. Finish Medium to long, wood, prunes, floral, light chocolate, light coffee. ABV is pretty well integrated and the rum needs to rest. The empty glass has some citrus and sugarcane.

More powerful than the first batch. The mouth is very surprising and much more fruity than the nose. Shortly after the fruit comes the spices which quickly take over with a rather pleasant wood in the background. The finish is a little too alcoholic for my taste but quite long.

A mix of power because it's young (18 months if I remember correctly) and woodiness (double passage in new barrels if I'm not mistaken), quite atypical! A really good quality-price ratio for amateurs with trained palates.

A Guadeloupean a bit lacking in aromas I find, with markers we already know without breaking three legs of a duck. However, it remains good to drink with a nice woodiness.
