Rhum J.M Single Barrel by Kirsch Import 2015

Agricole drinkers who want wood and fruit over raw grass will click with this young J.M single barrel. Cherry, vanilla and toasted oak lead, with a light resin/glue edge and a spicy allspice kick. Several tasters note the bourbon-cask influence makes it read less "typical agricole" than expected. At 55%, the alcohol is remarkably well tucked in — rounder than its age suggests.

Round, oaky young agricole with cherry Widely liked young Martinique agricole. Fans love the round balance, cherry and vanilla, and how well the cask strength hides. Main gripe: the finish could run longer.

Perfect for

Agricole fans who prefer oak and fruit over heavy grass

Second tasting: a slight resin note on the nose. Rating unchanged. A very good Agricole! Incredibly mild and round on the nose. Reminds me immediately of Foursquare. When I smell deeper into the glass, floral notes are added. Again round and mild on the palate, but here much more floral and barrel-heavy. There is practically no intrusive alcoholic spiciness. The aromas can all be found in the medium-long finish. I also find a hint of bourbon.

Palate Fresh, medium dry, wood, light roasted, fruits, light cherry, faint citrus, light floral, spice. Finish Medium long, balanced, wood, roasted, faint chocolate, light floral, light sugarcane. Extra note. Fruitier than the 10 and 15 year old releases.

Empfehlung!

Very French oaky in the nose. A typical acidity, also Armagnac. A bit glue-y too. Weird. Not agricole persé. Red fruits. In taste the agricole comes forward. More freshness. Lighter. Woody still with some bitterness. Nicely balanced flavours. I like this one a lot.

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 250 Rums

Rhum J.M is Martinique's oldest surviving distillery, tucked into a lush volcanic valley in Macouba on the northern slopes of Mount Pelee. It is the only producer on the island that makes its rum entirely from its own cane, milled within an hour of cutting, and its brown-sugar signature has made J.M one of the most beloved agricole names with collectors.
