"I'd sip this, don't mix it," as one member put it. Only two years old, but Texas heat pushes the barrel hard: heavy oak, roasted nuts, caramel and vanilla, with a slightly funky, sweaty-animal edge and dark cherry underneath. Tasters keep calling it surprisingly mature and full-bodied. The alcohol shows at 58.5%, and one found it a touch dry and bitter.

Here Batch 21-1 at 58.5%, the second of my two souvenir bottles from San Francisco. Nose: of course almost identical to Batch 20-1.Powerful and complex with wood, vinegar, caramel, tropical fruit, molasses and a nice leather-tobacco-smoke blend. Very pleasant on the nose, encourages tasting.A bit finer on the palate than Batch 20-1. more licorice, more cassis, but also a bit shorter in appearance. Still strong oak and nicely toasty. A real positive surprise for me. Only 2 years aging, but under the blazing Texas sun. Alcohol very well integrated in both. Lots of flavors on the nose and palate. The must have tried in any case!

Alcohol unfortunately not quite as well integrated. Overall, significantly less fruit notes and generally complexity compared to the new batch with 51.9% and for me personally too dry, a bit too bitter and too astringent. Has somehow something straw-like in the finish...

After batch 20-1 (for the review see RX3293)now 21-1:Very similar to the brother with 62%, if the nose here also seems a bit rounder. Perhaps because of the lower ABV, but also because another note joins, which is rather musty-musty to me and reminds me of damp wood.On the palate similar: Again a bit more moderate, more well-behaved, than the younger with more power and at the same time even more the impression of drinking an older Spaniard. Unlike many of these bottlings but not boring, but quite tasty and yet somehow different!Overall, perhaps a bit more boring than the bottling with 62%, but equally worth trying! Young and yet with character and again something new from a rumtechnisch rather unknown country. I like that!

Back to a crazy tasting at my buddy Thomas's place: time for molasses rums! 🍹 Balcones Texas Rum – 58.5% A Texan rum, naturally intriguing! Distilled in a pot still from molasses of various origins, then aged 24 months, it shows a nice intensity with its 58.5%. The color reflects the wood influence over this short period. Surprisingly mature and round for its age... worth watching!

Quite dense woody notes. Red fruit, cherry pit. Some tannin. Some sulfur. Nice attack but doesn't unfold afterwards. Interesting without being crazy.

Unmistakably a Balcones product! Despite only 2 years of aging, it feels surprisingly mature. On the nose, fruity aromas show, dark cherries, blackcurrant; somehow also like a net melon with a slightly overripe hint. Also a bit "funky", reminiscent of fresh spicy sweat, not unpleasant or stinky, rather animalistic. Floral undertones, grave flowers; plus some leather and tobacco, vanilla and cocoa and the distillery's typical aromatic oak aromas. On the palate very full, nutty and spicy with caramel and molasses; in the background some sour fruity accents, the melon now seems rather unripe, also cherries again. Distinct oak builds up, a bit charred but not bitter, vanilla, also minimal coconut. Very tasty! In the long finish again the highly aromatic oak with roasted nuts, lots of vanilla and some coconut, little charcoal abrasion and also the spicy-sweaty impression is back. Anyone who likes the Balcones style of whiskies will also enjoy this rum.
