One of the best Hampdens I've ever had in a glass, despite the relatively low alcohol content of only 46% and LROK Marque. A real fruit bomb of overripe bananas, fermented pineapples and papayas and the whole thing is topped off with a wonderful tarry diesel note and smoked fish. I had two bottles of this, but unfortunately this bottling is no longer available. What a pity. If I could, I would fill my whole cellar with it.

My sense of smell clearly perceives a Hampden, but a Hampden with the handbrake on, which is most likely due to the low percentages and the 2000 LROK batch. There is also relatively little ester to be found - but the typical fruit aromas: pineapple, bananas and papayas in the background. On the palate, the fruit from the nose, some toffee, cherry, nut and far from the glass: herbs, medicine and aniseed - the aroma spectrum is very broad, but the body and intensity are unfortunately rather weak. At the end, the herbal, medicinal and aniseed combination intensifies into a finish typical of Hampden. The finish is long in comparison to non-Jamaicans, but in comparison to Hampden it is rather short. The dilution to 46% is not quite as bad as I first suspected and know from the 1998 batch. In my opinion, water does the 1998 batch no good at all, but it's not quite as bad with the 2000 batch. Nevertheless, this rum would have been a tick better if it had been bottled at cask strength. 79 points
