CDI St. Lucia 2002

7.9/10
17 community reviews ↓

People who chase honest, unsweetened Saint Lucia rum will find a lot to like here: orange peel, peach and papaya up front, a glue-and-ester edge, plus herbs and fresh cane on the palate. The big recurring gripe is the 43% dilution — several tasters feel it thins out the fruit and still leaves a bit of alcohol bite. One member even flagged a burnt-plastic note.

  • Orange and peach
  • Real ester funk
  • Honest, unsweetened

Fruity ester St. Lucia, held back by dilution Most agree it's genuine, well-made St. Lucia with good fruit and ester character, but the 43% reduction divides people — several feel it's watered down yet still a touch hot.

Could be a good St. Lucia if it weren't for the dilution. It has fruit and medicine, plus a certain length, but unfortunately still a certain spiciness/alcohol-heavy character.

A very good Lucia in terms of taste! Unfortunately, the dilution has a negative effect.

A similarity in the nose to the two comparison candidates Blackadder St. Lucia 1999 and Renegade St. Lucia cannot be denied. However, the CDI is further away from the two bottlings than the two '99 bottlings themselves are from each other - which was to be expected (1999 <=> 2002). Less leather, tobacco and fruit, but a lot more glue and still reminiscent of Bellevue '98. Herbs, fresh sugar cane and honey can also be found on the palate. But what stands out the most in comparison is salt. Yes, the rum tastes a little salty and unfortunately there is no fruit to be found. The finish is medium to short and the sugar cane, herbs and oak can also be found here. Definitely the weakest candidate in this series. Are the weaknesses due to the strong dilution? I can't say for sure, but it certainly plays a role. 76 points

Expert review by The Fat Rum Pirate

"This is well made "real" unadulterated rum. I probably enjoy it more than most will as I really like this style and even I don't think its brilliant. Something I'll probably just have an odd drop of every now and again. Maybe when I'm feeling a bit macho. Good but..."
