CDI St. Lucia 2002

People who chase dry, unsweetened single casks and don't mind a bit of glue and medicine will find their thing here. This 13-year St. Lucia leans on orange peel, peach, floral notes and a distinct ester/glue streak, with a herbal, faintly salty palate. The recurring gripe: at 43% several tasters feel it was watered down too far, which softens the punch.

The community says
  • Orange peel and peach
  • Real unadulterated style
  • But: Feels over-diluted

How does CDI St. Lucia 2002 taste?

Aggregated from 17 community reviews.

Dry, funky St. Lucia dulled by dilution Well-made, honest St. Lucia with fruit, glue and a salty herbal edge. Most tasters like the profile but keep saying the 43% dilution takes the wind out of it.

Could be a good St. Lucia if it weren't for the dilution. It has fruit and medicine, plus a certain length, but unfortunately still a certain spiciness/alcohol-heavy character.

A very good Lucia in terms of taste! Unfortunately, the dilution has a negative effect.

A similarity in the nose to the two comparison candidates Blackadder St. Lucia 1999 and Renegade St. Lucia cannot be denied. However, the CDI is further away from the two bottlings than the two '99 bottlings themselves are from each other - which was to be expected (1999 <=> 2002). Less leather, tobacco and fruit, but a lot more glue and still reminiscent of Bellevue '98. Herbs, fresh sugar cane and honey can also be found on the palate. But what stands out the most in comparison is salt. Yes, the rum tastes a little salty and unfortunately there is no fruit to be found. The finish is medium to short and the sugar cane, herbs and oak can also be found here. Definitely the weakest candidate in this series. Are the weaknesses due to the strong dilution? I can't say for sure, but it certainly plays a role. 76 points

Expert review by The Fat Rum Pirate

This is well made "real" unadulterated rum. I probably enjoy it more than most will as I really like this style and even I don't think its brilliant. Something I'll probably just have an odd drop of every now and again. Maybe when I'm feeling a bit macho. Good but...

Saint Lucia Distillers

Avg Rating 8.2/10 over 230 Rums

St. Lucia Distillers is the island's only distillery and one of the most versatile in the Caribbean. Four stills give it eight different distillates, molasses and cane juice, pot and column, which its blenders turn into everything from the humble Bounty to the cult Chairman's Reserve and the super-premium Admiral Rodney. It rebuilt itself after an arson fire and is now owned by the same group as Martinique's J.M and Clement.
