Online RumX and Swell de Spirit tasting, March 2024. And re-tasted two years later. Right away, you dive into the world of old rums with woody notes and salted butter caramel and roasted notes. The freshness on the palate is the surprising element here, a light and refreshing mint. So the balance is exceptional and different from other NYs tasted. In the finish, coconut and a slight smoky side gain importance. The freshness and cedar (cigar box) remain present. A NY 94 that stands out for its freshness.

The nose is really fun and whets the appetite for the typical 94 coconut caramel vanilla and cask profile. The taste is then much more burnt and smoky than expected. Some slightly burnt caramel, heavily toasted coconut chips, tobacco, leather and milk chocolate, as well as medjoul dates and vanilla pulp and strong mocha. Very tasty but not my absolute favorite of 94 New Yarmouths!

8,6:On the nose, the first impression is quite rigid with coconut, caramelized dried fruits as raisins, apricots, some vanilla, the wood becomes charred with airing... On aeration, the molasses is vegetal, there is some polish, citrus, nuts and meaty notes arise... 9:On the palate, the attack is mostly woody with notes like spicy oak, hazelnut, pretty strong, chocolate, becomes roasted after a while with caramel, smoke, perhaps peat.The molasses is vegetal with tobacco, earthy.We have dried fruits and toasted coconut, few new wood notes arise like vanilla, resin, with malty touch. 8,5:The finish is long with burnt, roasted, dry&spicy wood and notes that come out of it, there's toasted coconut, some other unclear tropical fruits, dried fruits and quite unpleasant bitterness... Edit:3.8.25, oxidation upgrades this rum well up from 8.4 to 8.7

Wow this is a stunning 94 NY! Compares very favourably to the corman collins version I tried recently. The nose is an absolute smorgasbord of aromas. Hot and spicy on the palate with perfectly integrated alcahol like the corman collins version. I'm getting fruits, wood, and caramel with a lengthy finish. I am going to enjoy this bottle😍 a perfect alternative for all my whisky drinking friends! The only downside is that I didn't realise the bottle was only 500ml until I received it. I guess it's probably not a bad thing if it brings the price of admission down. As an update, in direct comparison with the Excellence Rhum NY94 I can detect some smokiness is this one that isn't as present in the Excellence Rhum.

Edit: Ultra approachable nose, impossible to detect 66.7% alcohol, vanilla, coconut, dried fruits, caramel, tobacco. Palate: of rare intensity, roasted fruits, dried fruits, still a lot of coconut, tobacco, but also spicy, smoky notes. The wood is well blended, accompanies the palate in a beautiful length without overpowering the rest. Obviously very long finish, and in the same vein. —— Old note Nose: easy, coconut wood caramel tobacco, invisible alcohol, Palate: clear, different, powerful, remarkable identity. Never tasted anything like this? Tobacco, smoke, light cooked fruits, strong coconut Finish: I missed notes + bounty/coconut, and a bit of leather? Heavy & quite burnt!

So this rum has triggered a buying frenzy of unprecedented proportions. I am curious. My few experiences with 1994 New Yarmouth have not impressed me so far. The profile has been too soft for me so far. After a few hours of breathing, an impressive bouquet unfolds: Glue, coconut, milk chocolate, dried fruit, some bergamot. Extremely round, somewhat restrained and yet very complex. Surprisingly fruity in the mouth at first, then incredibly woody with strong tannins. The mouth is much more bitter and dry than the nose: dark instead of milk chocolate, with coffee, leather, dried apricot and bergamot again. What is strong is that the rum really reveals new facets in the mouth. The finish is again very woody, astringent, with some allspice and tobacco and unfortunately not as long as I had hoped. This is a great rum, even if it's not my preferred profile. Reminds me of the Monymusk MBS, El Dorado Albion or the Foursquare Pleni and that's quite a statement.

Classic NY profile, rich, dense aromas full of coconut, vanilla, spices and fresh tropical fruits - with a subtle peat note or an impression of burnt tobacco on the palate. In a direct comparison with other representatives from the vintage, I find it slightly inferior because I personally don't completely like the peaty note. However, the rum is at the highest level, is on a par with the other NY94 releases in terms of quality and is an absolute success.

The most elegant, finest rum of today's horizontal tasting (three NY 1994). Appealing cognac note. Very harmonious, rather light rum, which is only slightly inferior to the FRC NY 1994 in the finish.

Wow. A 27 year old NY and then also 24 years tropical grips and in barrel strength. There I am curious 😍.Nose: wonderfully dense, intense and very aromatic. Initially sweet and spicy with a subtle tobacco note and toasted coconut. Dark fruits, such as cherry, currant and blackberry, as well as dried apricot and blood orange, join in. Caramelized behind, almost a bit cola. Woody-vanilla-smoky at the back. Excellent. 92Palate: fantastic here as well. Concentrated, intense, great flavor density. Spicy, woody, fruity and toasty-smoky at the same time. Also a pleasant tobacco note again. Plus vanilla, licorice, some nutmeg, roasted nuts, but also dried date and orange peel. 92Really great old NY, has a lot of a Demerar.

For me, the clear winner in crosstasting between 7x NY94. Totally round and complex, but incredibly long-lasting due to the high content. Overall, however, an incredibly good vintage of high quality.

An authentic and captivating New Yarmouth 1994. The nose is particularly round, wrapped in notes of dried fruits (raisin), coconut and very indulgent pastries (caramel, toffee, brown sugar, viennoiseries) that perfume the nostrils. Roasted wood, leather, chocolate, coffee and spices (vanilla, chili, pepper, nutmeg) are powerful, helped by slight phenolic notes (polish, varnish, glue). An intense but enticing nose that gains amplitude with aeration. The attack on the palate is very powerful. The profile of old New Yarmouth resonates with a thunderous impact on the palate: coconut, dried fruits (apricot, raisin), spices (vanilla, pepper, chili, nutmeg), roasted notes, toasted wood, chocolate, coffee, caramel, toffee, pastries and tobacco give a warm, intense but very tasty and complex combination. The alcohol is present but well integrated for its high level (good aeration is nevertheless necessary). The profile could make one think of a Demerara blind tasting. The finish is very long, playing on the flavors perceived on the palate with finesse and elegance. We find the harmony of the palate on the sweet and warm notes, spices, toasted oak, dark notes (dark chocolate, leather, coffee), tobacco and fruits (dried raisin and apricot, coconut). A reference among the New Yarmouth 1994 and a flagship for Swell de spirits, who offered this cuvée among the first bottlers, and at a more than reasonable price.

My sample stood in the almost empty bottle for a few days as the remainder of the division - that should have been sufficient aeration 😉 Nose: coconut flakes³, very warm, bourbon and vanilla. Very similar to Foursquare, only more intense. On the palate it really gets going! The high alcohol content transports a lot of aromas. The facets are very similar to the experience on the nose. Late in the finish, the rum turns without warning towards smoke and bacon, very cool! Super rum! But falls short of my expectations. I have the RA NY 1994 in the other glass for comparison and the Swell cuts a better figure there, especially with the twist towards smokiness. The special thing here is not an extreme but the good balance, which comes into its own even better with a few drops of water.

Great. Really tasty 94NY. Very mature with lots of roasted notes and some burnt caramel ... I really like it. Going towards a nutty dark demerara profile with a slightly medicinal note makes this one of my favorite NY94s ... at least my top pick of the less fruity ones.

Very good NY! I liked a lot the dried apricot notes paired with roasted almonds and coconut. The barrel notes are well noted! The alcohol is well noted too, could be integrated much better.

And for the second time today in the 9 range. Wow, an absolutely great rum. It's a mix of fruit and sweetness, with vanilla and tropical fruit on the nose and then vanilla and coconut on the palate. A dream.

28.03.2024 Retasting at Swell de Spirits Masterclass and I stick to my score. ------------------------ #4189 Darn this is a nice rum. We'll balanced, complex and super ABV integration. Fruity with a spicy/warm palate and wonderful curtains in the glass. It's intense and dry but in the most wonderful way. I love the smoky touch on the palate and finish. The empty glass gets more intense on the smoke and caramel as well as a light touch of chocolate. I'd love to have one of these on my shelf 😊 Price to quality is very good in my mind. This is one of those rums where I can lean back and say "Damn life is good".

Another excellent 1994 New Yarmouth. Dried fruit and red fruit, wood, spices, roasted aromas and caramel. Also slightly smoky. Everything can also be found on the palate and in the long finish. I like it very much.

A very nice 94 New Yarmouth but aren’t most of them? All the typical notes are present. The nose is very fruity with wood, spices and a nice sweetness. The mouth is similar and I had a slight tobacco note during the finish.

Charred coconut shell and fresh coconut flesh are very present in nose and mouth. For the age, surprisingly little wood, which is surely an advantage for some who don't like tannins. What really flashes me here is the finish: the coconut is complemented by chocolate and you immediately think, yes exactly, that's how Bounty should really taste.

Even though the 1994 New Yarmouth releases usually have only minimal differences, they consistently perform at a high level. This bottling from Swell de Spirits is no exception, which I like very much due to its aroma balance.

Before we proceed let’s just appreciate the label for a second. That being said, here we go: The nose is really complex, warm lots of vanilla and caramelised sugar from every king. Some dried fruits, wood and spices in addition. Smells really promising. And it delivers. The palate is great, providing all from above, while still being kind of sweet and almost astringent at the same time. The finish is slightly too bitter (woody) for my liking but a few drops of water are doing now harm here. Quite the opposite, it gets even more balanced and underlines the sweetness, vanilla and spices. 9.1 with some water, 9.0 without.

On the nose dried fruit, toffee, blood orange, cola, earthy or almost dusty notes, blackcurrants, dried herbs, old wardrobe... Really good 94er NY, I have to try it again in direct comparison against the Royal Cane. Edit: tasted today against the Distilia Lignum Vitae. The Swell seems a bit too smoky in direct comparison, especially on the palate, which now leads to a deduction of points.

So here it is, the first NY that I really like. A real bomb. The alcohol is super integrated. Flavor-wise it goes towards nut, coconut, wood and light roasted notes. Update after the Swell tasting: everything as before :-) great rum

👃 magnificent nose, on the altar of olfactory concentration; cooked vanilla with its homemade caramel, my grandmother’s flan, Strasbourg fudge, cookies fresh from the oven, 70% pastry chocolate in its milk cooked in a pan, coconut and roasted hazelnuts, dried fruits when opening the bag, apricot liqueur, dry and spicy wood, slight polish and noble wood furniture care products. The kind of nose you can sniff for hours. 😋 Wow! You can feel the power, and I find it superbly integrated, serving an explosion of indulgent flavors; loose dried fruits at the local grocer (toasted coconut, apricot, papaya, mango, dates), turning into a concentrated caramel of fruit juices, the crème brûlée again, delicious, accompanied by Bourbon vanilla and a bit of 100% cocoa. A deep oak woodiness, present, structuring this palate, between a toasted and smoky aspect, evolving towards dried tobacco leaves. A profile that wonderfully combines indulgence and roasting. ⛳ Very long, warm, comforting, vanilla caramel, roasted wood, spicy, cocoa, pod, dried tobacco leaf, wood smoke, return of dried fruits in bags (coconut slices, apricot, mango cubes, dried papaya, medjool dates). The empty glass releases an enveloping smell of freshly roasted coffee beans. The next day, a fine dusty caramel. 📝 A dry, indulgent, precise, complex New Yarmouth, mixing Jamaican intensity without the exuberance of esters with this undeniable Demerara/Foursquare melting pot. 🏅 A high-flying selection from Mika, in the top 3 with the Hampden 2011 and the TDL 2000 clos des spiritueux. Among also the best NY 94, even if for now I prefer the Rum Artesanal 25 years by 1 point.

For me no fruit notes, rather roasted aromas and some leather. Overall reminds me more of a Foursquare than a New Yarmouth, but the NY basic DNA is recognizable in the background. I find it tasty and the quality is definitely noticeable, but I can't fully understand the big hype around the bottling. For me, compared to the RA 94er NY, it's a bit weaker.

The best NY I had. Amazing notes of glue. Smoke. Fruits. Incredible not much to say. Very intense, this rum deserved a reduction. It is indeed pleasant but I find it quite simple: coconut, vanilla, smoky and a little fruity like plum complete the whole. The alcohol gives a spicy aspect.

KD clearly woodier than my reference from RA. Clearly more bitter. Overall somewhat less balanced. The Swell surprisingly reveals new facets. Clearly less wood than the KD. Instead milk chocolate, hazelnut/nougat and unfortunately also smoky/peaty. The two bottlings from Distilia come closest to my reference from Rum Artesanal. 1994 New Yarmouth simply has outstanding quality.

Among all the rums I've had in the glass so far, this is my personal favorite. As with the other NY I'm a bit overwhelmed to describe what I can taste out of it. Extremely round and delicious - a Minuszieger point is that in the bottle is so little in it.

Had only a few 94er NY in the glass so far. But the impression that they are all great is confirmed once again. I'm quite sure I would find only minor differences in a blind tasting. But at that level, that's forgivable.

From afar, glue notes on the nose. However, not unpleasant. Caramel nutty scent on the palate, extremely complex. Really great aromas... coconut with a good intensity. Great stuff.
