Enjoying a few samples while watching a tv series about WW2. Nose Fresh, medium intense, wood, light roasted, light tobacco, dried fruit, light leather, faint plum. Palate Fresh, oily, medium intense, warm, wood, light roasted, faint coffee, light chocolate, light orange, light olive, medium dry. Finish Long, wood, light roasted, light mint, light bitter, medium dry, oily, faint tobacco, light leather, Empty glass Prunes, light chocolate, light leather, light earthy, faint coffee.

Not a rum for a sober palate. The Versailles profiles take me 3-4cl to really arrive. The first impression was not great for any of them. But later they unfold quite a bit of complexity. This one still feels a bit diluted.

Not a loudmouth, more of a connoisseur. But I really like the nose, green apple, Tic Tac Orange (if anyone still knows that), herbs, vanilla crescent cookies, baking mix. On the palate, (slightly sharp) spice and a good amount of barrel / tannins in the finish.

24/01/2026: tasted @ Liquid Leuven 2026. This was a huge surprise for me! I didn't expect to like it this much. Beautiful delicate notes of almond, frangipane and whipped cream. The ABV is perfect in strength. I was able to get my hands on a full bottle at release price, so very happy!

A typical Versailles, which, unlike the nose, is quite astringent and dry on the palate.

Nose Quality tobacco, cigar on the nose. A scent between papyrus and tissue paper. A mentholated aroma, herbal with lemon balm essence. A bit of china oil. The papery scents are really intriguing. Lots of leather. Slight caramel notes underneath. A more delicate nose than I expected. A biscuit-like side; reminiscent of Petit Beurre and edible microgreens, grassy side. Wafer. Spoiled red plum. Old furniture, old wood. Maybe a slight dampness. Maybe fresh almond or unripe almond. A floral note that opens up over time; like violet tea and rosehip. Maybe honeysuckle and a bit of flower honey in the background. Although there's a slight vanilla underneath, the wood influence can't be said to be strong. Extremely complex; it reveals its complexity not through a single aroma group but several. Despite its age, the green notes create a back-and-forth between liveliness and rawness. 87 Palate The body is medium or slightly below medium on the palate. A side like dry rosebuds and lemon peel is added to the nose. Interestingly, a slightly spoiled side evolves. Quite a dry palate. The leather side is still here, tobacco is reduced but still present. I might not believe it's barrel strength here. Lots of black pepper, some allspice. Maybe a bit of green anise on the palate. Plum kernel and dried apricot. An unnecessary antibiotic-like bitterness. That off-flavour I can't quite define unfortunately leaves this far behind my expectations. 81 Finish Here, the very clear black pepper combines with an interesting umami side creating a side like a well-sealed steak au poivre. I guess that off-aroma is at least partially hidden within this illusion. That unpleasant spoiled aroma is not felt as much on the palate. Medium-low intensity, medium length finish. Again lots of tissue paper, earthiness and a musty, moldy side. Unnecessarily slight bitterness. At the very end, that spoiled note shows up once more, spoiled celery. Unfortunately, that aroma spoils this for me a bit as well. General impression: I wasn't sure if that off-flavour I mentioned only affects me like this; in a bottling where everything goes so smoothly, I've never had an aroma so repulsive to me before (at least not at this level). The wood influence is different. Need to see what others think. 82

23-01-2025 Had expected something different from a 34 year old Versailles. Believe it’s a mix of overweight of continental aging and the low ABV. I was missing a stronger nose and a deeper taste. Did not linger long on the palate
