The surprise here is the ABV: 70.2%, yet tasters keep saying the alcohol vanishes into the glass. This unaged Guadeloupe agricole from black cane smells like standing in a cane field — grassy, earthy, floral — with lime, grapefruit and sharp pepper underneath. This was a huge surprise because once rested the ABV comes of as very well integrated. I could pick up the flavours as soon as I opened the bottle and they only grew stronger while resting. Fruity and fresh with a real Agricole nose and palate. The price to quality is very good in my mind.

This rum, Bologne Le Distillat 100% Canne noire, is from a single plot on the slopes of the Soufrière volcano in Basse-Terre. It’s a limited edition of 7500 bottles made from black cane. It’s distilled in the distillery’s copper Creole column whereafter it rested for some months before bottling at its natural strength. The nose is complex, fresh, dry, salty and a little bitter with scents of pepper, licorice, lime and grapefruit. At the palate it’s sweet, round, flowery, oily and fruity with flavors of citrus and sugarcane. The finish is long, lively, floral and fruity.

Bologna calls in the heavy artillery with this raw, single-varietal (black cane) monster. The nose is immediately apparent, with its strong vegetal, earthy, herbaceous and floral overtones. You'd think you were in a sugarcane field. Behind this fresh, wet nose, however, lie citrus fruits and notes of spice and pepper. A slightly tense Bologna that's just waiting to be released. The palate is lively and very spicy. Aniseed pops up alongside lime, sugarcane, chili and earth to remind us that this is a beast that's hard to tame. It feels like the breath of the desert on the palate, with a lovely aromatic intensity. The alcohol, however, is very well integrated. The finish is long and warm. Once again, the spices (chili pepper) wage a merciless battle against the planty, herbaceous aromas to establish their supremacy on the palate, with citrus standing in ambush. Powerful yet well-structured and balanced, this Bologna will be the perfect companion for a Ti Punch from hell.

Exciting profile, I'm generally really a fan of Canne Noir. Here, however, the earthy notes dominate a bit too much and the fine sweetness from the nose gets a bit into the background, especially in the finish. Still a really strong BdC with incredibly well-integrated alcohol.

The raw column spirit, that's life? What aromatic intensity, from a nose almost vanilla and aniseed, in the middle of a field of daffodils, to a mouth of exceptional sweetness. Red fruits, citrus, a peppery finish slightly leaning towards damp earth. Superb to finish a meal. Alcohol clearly well integrated, only a warmth on the finish remains.
