Made for drinkers already deep into Caroni's petrol-and-tar world — this is a heavy one. Tar, rubber and charred oak lead, with leather, tobacco and pepper close behind, and only late-arriving pineapple, mango and dried fruit to lift it. At 66% the alcohol is loud; several tasters say it could sit better, and one notes this leans smokier and woodier than a classic Caroni, missing the usual caramelized mango.

When this one was poured there was no doubt where it was from. The lovely Caroni notes were there right away. Runner and tar mixed with roasted wood and light fruits. The leather note is very light and I loved the empty glass. Yum 😊

Day 23 of the Samples de Luxe calendar. Caroni on the nose! Mechanical workshop and very ripe tropical fruits, but also vegetal aromas. The palate is marked by alcohol, but immediately fills with deep, complex aromas. The finish is marked by wood and a certain bitterness, but is not as long as some Caronis. The empty glass expresses all the complexity of this rum, which, like all Caronis HTRs, undoubtedly needs plenty of oxygenation. The slightly disappointing finish lowered my rating. Repeated and clearly not as good as the "Tresspassers".

A Caroni that plays on raw strength with great intensity. The oil notes of tar and rubber are immediately perceptible, before a hint of freshness appears, followed by red fruits, then exotic fruits (pineapple, mango) that bring greediness. The woodiness is dry and intense, with lively spices, leather and empyreumatic notes that leave a lasting impression on the nostrils. A fine concentration of Caroni DNA. The attack is very powerful, marked by wood, leather, spices (pepper), tobacco and smoky, even burnt notes that take over the palate. Tar and rubber recall Caroni's typical dirty side, while a bitterness emerges on the palate with a certain astringency. A hint of fruitiness emerges with pineapple, citrus and dried fruit. The 66% is present and could be better integrated, but the rum's structure is there and well developed. A rough, even beastly Caroni. The finish is very long, taken up by bitter notes, tannins, a woodiness incensed by spices and smoky notes. Hydrocarbon notes follow, with leather, tobacco and dried fruit. A lively, provocative Caroni that needs time to be fully appreciated.

The strongest Caroni taste ever. Sooo oil there. Unfortunately I dont know if I like it or hate it. ... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory a rum that was added at a ratio of 1:10 to a navy blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

Haaa, the nose is coming together. It is different from the traditional Caroni! This is more typed on wood and spices. All encompassed by the typical hydrocarbons of the distillery but in lesser measure than usual. It is more solvent. It is promising... In the mouth, it is woody. Woody smoked-toasted even! There are plum, raisins, tobacco, mango in the background. The finish is very long on peppery with a slight astringent note. Quite a nice length, I really liked it. It's been a long time since I had immersed myself in a Caroni, phew, it's good! Again a huge thank you to ROA for this incredible tasting. And moreover, it seems that I will even have the right to a small sample of the last releases to continue ...

Very good Caroni 98 but doesn't quite play in the Champions League. Overall a bit too much on the smoky side and I'm missing the usually so present caramelized mango note here - which is rather replaced by not quite ripe pineapple as well as some tobacco. The alcohol could be integrated slightly better. All in all, though, that's nitpicking at a high level and a good 98 Caroni overall!

Very smooth and soft vanilla. From first sight It don’t even remind Caroni. After time. Heavy charred oak. Coal. Really smoke rum. Rubber. “Used sweet chawing gum”. Not much fruits by now. Palate are strong. Cola. Liquorice. Tobacco leaves. Minty pears. Apples. Fruitiness comes out only more like 15 mins in glass… Don’t rush. Take a time. On nose it really somehow reminds me island scotch whisky. Banana… lots of bananas
