Sip this one slowly and neat — it's a 31-year-old Enmore from the wooden Versailles still, and it drinks dry and woody. Pencil shavings and licorice on the nose, then herbs, tea, roasted notes and dried apricot on the palate. Several tasters loved the intensity; a couple found it "too herbal" and slightly hot. Big, austere, not for cola.

When nosing this rum it was the smell of my old friends wood workshop. An intense, well balanced and complex rum with nice deep dark flavours. The wood is heavy in a good way and the light fruit and vanilla compensates for it really well. I like the nice clear licorice in there as well. A great rum with even greater history. This rum was made in the original destillery before it was closed down 😊

Similar to the second batch, it offers a blend of dried apricot, toffee, the slightly metallic minerality of the typical pencil shavings notes, as well as spices of licorice, pepper, aniseed, wood... aromatically complex, slightly drier at the back than Batch 2. With its pointed finish, it is just ahead of Batch 2 in my estimation, but this can also be the other way round depending on individual taste. Either way, both rums are convincing and are at a high level.

Enmore 1990 Blind tasting No.3: This is a very successful bottling with plenty of aromas and a nice interplay between nose and palate. There is a nice fruitiness on the nose, pleasant spices and wood appear on the palate. For me, this bottling is in 3rd place out of 8.

Cross Tastinge across 12 bottlings of 1990 Versialles destilled Enmores. Looking at the cask strength / 50%+ ABV bottlings in the line up (CG, DT, Duchess, Greenheart I & II, RdL, Sponge, TWJ), all deliver on the classic Versailles notes: Pencil, herbs/anis, some continental fruits and a wet/moldy woodiness. Quality wise I don’t see an outlier tbh, all very enjoyable. Noticeable, however, is a very intense nose on the Sponge, which adds lots of resin and „woody“ notes to the mix,probably paying tribute to its (partly) maturation in wine casks. This is clearly outstanding out of the batch. Bonus points for the older Greenheart and TWJ for highest intensity on the (continental) fruit notes for me. DT and The Duchess gravitating more towards spicy notes in the mix. Same overall verdict for the palate. All rums in the batch are of high quality and there is no dramatic outlier (good or bad), except for the Rum Sponge. While I enjoyed the nose, on the palate the bottling is overwhelmed by wine notes. As for a lot of finished/double matured releases I just don’t see the point and here don’t like it particularly. Among the other bottlings: the DT is particularly nicely balanced with a pleasant sweetness working nicely with herbal and more darker notes. Very enjoyable. My favorite on the palate is probably the younger Greenheart (at least in this sitting). Almost as balanced as the DT but with a bit more anise and herbal notes for a bit more excitement. The older Greenheart is also very nice, with a bit less sweetness yet also very nicely balanced. TWJ and The Duchess are overall a bit more in the harsher side concerning alcohol integration, yet still very good. Very strong bottlings of the vinatage overall and a pleasure to have some side by side. Cheers to Alex for curating (most of) the tasting set! 🙌

RumX Blind Tasting 8x Enmore 1990 Rum No. 3 Once again a representative of the typical profile. Mirabelle plums, pears and licorice on the finish. Nice (not bitter) tea can also be found. Many thanks to Alex for organizing!

Community Tasting Enmore 1990. No. 3. Old varnished wood on the first nose, followed by fresh herbal notes (menthol) and tropical fruit on the second. The wood dominates, with a fair amount of astringency coating everything and making this rum austere and strict. The finish is moderately long, with lingering bitter notes. An assertive, very woody rum, and I can understand why it might displease. But I like it without getting too excited. You feel like you're in a three-masted sailing ship.

Community Tasting Enmore 1990 VSG/MEV as a blind tasting. Clearly fruitier on the nose than Rum 1&2 ... even a little floral. On the palate rather wood, licorice, roasted notes and herbs. A little too herbal for me, but the best so far in terms of intensity. Tasted were: Rum 1 = rx1560 Alambic Classic Rum 2 = rx3280 Cave Guildive Rum 3 = rx12797 RDL Rum 4 = rx 1432 Rum Nation Rum 5 = rx 5924 Duncan Taylor Rum 6 = rx 5423 Moon Import Rum 7 = rx 17311 Rum Sponge Rum 8 = rx 12427 Greenheart My ranking: 8 > 7 = 5 > 6 = 3 > 4 = 2 > 1

Another one from the Enmore Megasplit by Alex. But somehow I still can't really get to grips with this profile. It's all too licorice and herbal for me. We'll see when I taste the others whether it becomes more accessible for me. Conclusion now, not bad but not my thing.

Watching the Tour de France and tasting a few samples. This will be a wonderful afternoon. A good start. This one was immediately recognizable as Guyana. Nice dark and roasty. Wood, leather, and pencil shavings are also noticeable.

RumX Community Tasting - Enmore 1990 (thanks to Alex!) Beautifully fruity on the nose, with nice herbal notes. The palate is even more dominated by the herbs and vegetal notes. I like it very much.

No3 des 1990er Enmore Tastings, thanks to Alex Kunath. Unfortunately this one I drank in one go, and therefore have to go back to my notes. I remember that I did not care much for the nose, while the tongue was very malt and wood heavy, along with the typical notes and herbs, and the licorice at the end. Unfortunately the alcohol was not good integrated, but out of the bunch this one was one of the top performers.

An Enmore style two rooms two ambiances. The silky and non-aggressive nose is loaded with aromas. Beautiful floral and herby 'Versailles' notes mingle with shimmering spices (licorice, anise, chili, pepper), then dried and indulgent fruits (raisin, apricot) balance everything against the wood. The vanilla is also very soft and pleasant. A sensual and balanced nose. The profile changes tone and becomes sharper, more marked on the palate. It becomes warm and more mineral, while keeping the Versailles markers: herbs (tea, thyme), wood and spices described earlier become drier and more powerful on the palate. The aromas brought by dried fruits, vanilla and citrus offer some sweetness and comfort, but the alcohol could be integrated a little better overall. A changing profile, rather complex and offering a nice aromatic intensity. The finish is long, dry and tannic, even metallic. The vegetal side lasts with its tea herbs and thyme, alongside the woody pencil shavings and barrel. The spices and leather leave an indelible trace at the back of the palate. A characterful, lively Enmore / Versailles that leaves you wanting more, we are in the upper range of the Enmores of this vintage.

Nose a bit closed up, quite intense in wood, a bit metallic, some yellow fruit, a bit minty. I find it a bit sharp in alcohol. Might be too inexperienced to fully appreciate.

... Enmore - drive distiller, now just a functional distillation device. Apparently the only wooden still in the world which is very popular. The Enmore rums have a flavour of ash, leather, heavy wood, which will delight especially the lovers of whiskey. And if in the traditional Guyanese way the producer adds a little molasses to the rum, you have a unique very distinctive and heavy rum in the bottle. One of my favourites.

Guayan Tasting 1990 by Alex. All rum has been in the air for 30 minutes, equal rights for all :-) No. 3 is much more elegant on the nose, with nut and leather aromas. Unfortunately, there is not quite as much of this on the palate. The alcohol is at the start again, but less than in 1 and 2, but the finish is not as long.

One of my oldest rums. The nose is already very interesting, metallic with pencil shavings and spicy influences, on the tongue an interesting play between burnt sugar, mineral notes and a strong spice that with anise and rosemary tastes very much like licorice. At the end also the slightly bitter influences of the metallic notes. Interesting overall impression.
