Most tasters land in the same place: a genuinely good 1998 Caroni, just not one that reinvents the vintage. You get the classic tar and rubber, dark chocolate, coffee and a raisiny sweetness, with the 62.9% surprisingly well tucked in. A few call it the lighter, rounder side of Caroni; one felt it flattens a bit at the finish. Dirty in the best way.

Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad that produced rum at the height of its glory, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is truly a unique rum.

Another rekindling at the GRF and I really like this profile. ----- Back on track with a nicely balanced release with all the right flavours. Love the chocolate and raisin that blends well with a light coffee note in between the tar and rubber.

A pleasant, rather restrained nose. But on the palate comes a wonderful roastiness, chocolate and umami. Very horny 1998 Caroni!

A sample taken at the German Rum Festival 2024. Tasted in parallel with CoR cask #9. The nose is intense with a mix of pastry and tropical fruit, almost like a nice Foursquare. The impression here is brighter than for cask #9. Machine shop aromas are present but in the background. The alcohol marks the very first mouthful, but the aromas invade the mouth immediately afterwards. A fuller, more generous palate than cask #9. The finish is long, with pastries, fruit and a refreshing vegetal edge. The empty glass is marked by vegetal notes. A very fine rum, very close and yet much better than its brother (#9).

Powerful and edgy - fiery spice, rubber and tar notes, wood, coffee, roasted notes, and a bit of licorice in the finish. There's also a subtle heavy sweetness of dried fruits and caramel. A very solid 1998 Caroni.

Despite many similar releases, the continental 1998 profile always produces delicious drops. Nice fruity nose with raisins, a few red fruits, caramel, cola, coffee and toffee. The palate is then beautifully dark with coffee, dark chocolate, dirt and 98 sweetness. Great mouthfeel.

Today in a quick test 3 '98 Caroni. The 15-year-old from Velier, the Rum Nation, and the No.3 from Colours of Rum. By far the loser is the Rum Nation bottling, the narrow winner is the CoR. But all three can’t threaten my previous favorite of the '98s, the Precious Liquors.

One of the greater bottles from this vintage. Everything one could expect, dirty and with just the right amount of rubber and tar :) It feels sweet and not overly complex in the beginning but opens up really nice. So take your time and enjoy.

Notes from Whisky Live Paris 2024 - to be reviewed and deepened. From one cask to another, the caliber changes. Here chocolate, coffee enhance the flavors, more pep, more rubber present, and some spices. A very good moment!

A very good, but in my opinion not a fantastic 1998 Caroni, something was missing to be outstanding. Slightly flattening towards the end, but still a complex play of the known Caroni aromas. Not bad, but not one I would buy the bottle of.

A very good rum with an excellent rating, once again with a very interesting and distinctive Caroni nose! It's a little sharp on the palate, and I find the cask 9 more interesting! A powerful, aromatic rum with a beautiful balance.
