CDI Grays Mauritius (Perola) 2009
One of the best Mauritius molasses rums people here have tasted, and the Armagnac cask is why. It smells of fresh peach, apricot and vanilla, with mint and menthol running through the palate and a wine-y fruitiness from the finish. At 53% the alcohol is barely there — several call it dangerously easy to sip. The menthol streak isn't for everyone.

Peach-and-Armagnac Mauritius, easy at 53% Widely loved and a repeat bottle-killer here — the Armagnac finish adds fruit and depth without dominating. A couple of tasters find the menthol or thin mouthfeel not their thing.

Wow, Mauritius really is full of gems! Except for the finish, which could have been longer, for me it's flawless. The nose is very rich in fruit, particularly quince, spices and butter caramel, with a few notes of milk chocolate as well, superb. The fresher palate passes quite quickly, with a lingering menthol base and grapefruit. It sparkles in the mouth! It's very successful. I don't know what the finish brought to it, but it's very, very good.

Note: Employment at Perola GmbH (spirits industry), partial professional involvement with evaluated bottlings. All reviews are my personal, unpaid opinion. Clearly milder and more drinkable than the 11-year-old without finish. The additional 20 months in the Armagnac finish have perfectly softened the rum and taken off some of its edges. The 11-year-old is much funkier and more intense, this one is much more harmonious but still has enough power. Interesting are the light peach/apricot notes with eucalyptus and dark chocolate with cappuccino, cinnamon, nutmeg, and nuts, plus a bit of lemon peel, and right at the end comes again the characteristic menthol/grapefruit peel note for me. I also really like it, almost even better depending on the mood! 😁🥳 In any case, both bottlings are in my opinion absolute Mauritius Gray's benchmarks! 👌🏽

The Gray is a little too unbalanced for me.... The spice and wood influence dominate too much and cover up the fine fruit and plant flavors. I still like the finish with the minty note the best.
Review by Mirco
Ripe Mauritius rum with clearly recognizable cask influence. On the nose bright fruit, grape, vanilla and a light spice, plus a noticeable wine character from the Armagnac finish. On the palate soft and round with sweet fruit, wood and subtle herbal notes, overall clean but a bit less focused. In direct comparison the Cognac version seems more precise and coherent, while this finish scatters a bit more. Still a decent bottling with solid depth.
Review by Jakob
A nose length ahead of the eleven-year-old, here with an additional Armagnac finish. The same brings a few new flavors into play and softens the somewhat rough finish slightly, but here too I lack a tad of balance for an even higher score. However, a positively surprising release remains, which is one of the best Mauritius rums to date.

This is my first Mauritius molasses session, after having already tried it yesterday. In a direct comparison of the Savoir Faire 2009 for LMDW, the Savoir Faire 2010 for LMDW, and the CDI 2009 13 yo for Perola. In terms of profile, the Perola CDI and the LMDW are very similar, but the differences are clearly noticeable. Here too, we have the peach iced tea reminiscent of TDL, along with wood and slight roastiness. The CDI is a bit lighter, a bit flatter. More citrus fruits, less coconut-chocolate. At 53.1%, it is extremely relaxed to drink, with hardly any alcohol burn. The fruits remain very present in the mouth, still fresh and ripe rather than dried. That’s pretty cool. The mouth reminds me of the Cadenhead TDL 2002 (mango eau de vie), which might also be due to the slight mint. The finish is as fruity as the palate, but it is accompanied by a very bitter vegetal note that I can hardly identify. A fairly long-lasting lemon acidity remains. Out of my trio, the 2010 LMDW is the best; the intensity on the palate more than makes up for the restraint on the nose. Alcohol integration, balance, complexity—all top-notch. The 2009 is very, very close behind. Here, the old apricot and higher complexity really convince, but the slight bite costs a few points. Maybe the difference is more about the mood of the day than the taste. The CDI is very good but falls a bit short. It’s lighter and therefore leans too much on the fruity side.

I like it very much! Due to the minty notes, I would probably blindly classify it as TDL. Very exciting!
Review by Gunnar Böhme "Bauerngaumen" 🤓
The farmer's palate says:Clearly softer than his little, untamed eleven-year-old brother. The latter's powerful performance is nevertheless a tad more pleasing.Genial pair of brothers.

Really good New Grove. I'm already a big fan of the distillery and the rum shows all the great markers: yellow fruits and generally fruity, dark chocolate, caramel, mint, vanilla, vegetal and spicy additions. Very complex and very good. Price also more than fair.
Review by zabo
I matched this from Gunnar’s split against the S.B.S Mauritius from 2009. Gotta say, I like this one a lot better, though I don’t think it’s necessarily a revelation. But honestly, for the price, you can’t go wrong.

What a grenade.

Excellent value for money. More rounded and spicy than the 11-year-old. I like the 11-year-old a tad better due to the intense minty cherry note.
Review by Fuwi
I want to like it, really! But the menthol notes are just not my thing, I'm terribly sorry! The nose is already very interesting, fresh peach and vanilla, plus mineral notes. On the tongue comes the mint and menthol, especially in the finish. Fruity notes and black tea with light spices and the character of an Armagnac, that comes out even more clearly. Overall certainly a good bottling, unfortunately I just don't like menthol.

8,2:On the nose, minty molasses, fresh with tea, waxy, medicinal, strong barrel impact with toasted wood notes like caramel, spicy, Armagnac barrel finish is obvious, raisins, bump into our nosetrils, strong. On aeration, peaches, grapefruit arise, sweet notes with pastry, chocolate, some leather, peppery touch, menthol hints. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is slightly alcoholic, fruity with peaches, dried apricots, grapes, sour cherry, lemon peel, Armagnac barrel finish is obvious, molasses is minty, fresh with tea, the wood is toasted, sweet with caramel, burnt sugar, pastry, cocoa, leather, spicy with cinnamon, vanilla, salty and slightly medicinal with menthol hints. 8,3:The finish is medium long, dry&tannic, slightly medicinal, molasses is minty, earthy with tobacco, vegetal with eucalyptus, black tea, fruits are citrus with grapefruit, lemon peel and yellow with peaches, as the oak is toasted with pastry, dark chocolate, nuts, spicy with cinnamon. Edit:3.10.26

Again, a finish. Let's see how much the Armagnac barrel works.Nose: oh yes, very clear Armagnac influence. Very intense sweet apricot and sweet peach, plus cherry and pleasant grapefruit. Some fresh, unobtrusive mint coming in now as well. All somewhat muted by fragrant cherry wood, dark caramel, a light smoky note and some chocolate, white chocolate. Liked it. 84Palate: wow, a nice flavor development. First briefly restrained, then it opens up immediately, slightly salty attack, then strong spicy and immediately peach and dried apricot, continuing with fat, almost bacony pecan to tangerine. Still fruit bread out the back. The Grays is wonderfully there, that Armagnac finish fruits it up. 86A very positive surprise.

09.03.2023 Having a few samples at home. Colour Medium dark in colour. Nose Fresh, light wood, light roasted, light peaches, light mint, spice, light caramel. Palate Fresh, light wood, light earthy, peaches, oily, faint smoke, lightly dry, dried fruit. Finish Medium to long, wood, light roasted, raisin, fruits, light peaches, spice, faint ginger. Needs to rest for a while to really open up properly.
Review by Chrischi78
A powerful release with an exciting Armagnac finish! The oak, dark chocolate and spicy tobacco notes perfectly complement the fruity rum. The finish stays warm and earthy – an outstanding Mauritius rum with character! Mega value for money!!
Review by Timo Groeger
So four rums left for today :) I just wondered if this is a TDL?! Because here mint is predominantly recognizable on the nose and palate. But it’s probably a Mauritius rum, I’m curious about the next Mauritius :)
Review by Skyfly
After Artur's Weird and Blind Tasting, a relief - peach iced tea, caramel and mint from nose to finish. Also, the whole thing, especially late in the finish, strongly reminds me of Armagnac, which is really a dream with additional black tea and tobacco.
Review by Eugene227
Review by Mopar Rules
this one is not convincing even given the fact that I am still a bit Covidised
Review by Boletus
The influence of the Armagnac is constantly present with its high-gloss polished oak, the dark chocolate with wine berries, the spicy tobacco and leather notes, as well as the aromas in the finish reminiscent of a warm deciduous forest floor, but everything blends with the fruity rum into a harmonious overall picture. Great stuff, really fun!

Review by primus
Pleasant on the nose, tasty fruity and intense. Slightly alcoholic. Equally intense on the palate, you get what you could expect with a hint of menthol. Good mix of barrel and fruit. Unfortunately too short finish.
Review by Christian Rudt
Very interesting bottling. Armagnac finishes have what. Especially the smell is simply class, here we then also experience on the palate rather sour cherry with neat cocoa while in the nose still apricot / peach dominates. Finish then a lot of cocoa with some cinnamon and the peach comes back a bit. Should be tasted!

Review by Bavarian Rum Lover
Much softer, rounder, milder and more drinkable than the 11-year-old brother with cognac finish. The Armagnac barrel used here is not in the way but supports and transports the flavors wonderfully. For me, the clearly better bottling.
Review by Jan Lu
Interesting taste experience. Smells very fruity and especially like Armagnac. This is also reflected in the taste. Added to this are lots of mild spices and a light barrel aroma. The sweet notes only come in the finish.
Review by DerAlexausHRO
Dry, sweet, woody, then comes fruitiness. Definitely an interesting rum that stands out. I don't think it will be my favorite, but it's interesting all the same.
Review by Rene Pfeiffer
For under 70 euros a great rum. The Armagnac finish is noticeable, but not intrusive.
Review by Righrum
A great 2009 from New Grove..this vintage has already delivered nice rums, and this one confirms the good feeling. Fruits, peaches especially, fresh mint and some sweetness from the barrel and, I think, some added caramel.
Review by Andi
Nice dark fruity notes, slightly bitter woody with hints of eucalyptus. Great stuff for the price, was really very positively surprised. Mauritius convinces me more and more lately.
Review by Buddudharma
The profile is pleasing, with wood, spices, and a fresh candy note. However, the mouthfeel is too thin to justify a better rating.
Review by Jussi Piirainen
On the nose: Interesting, i get mint, peaches and vanilla mainly. Peppery and barrel influence is there. Taste: Barrel influence and spices up front and then i get mint, tea and little bit of fruits. Quite pleasant and somewhat a mild mouthfeel Finish: Quite short finish, i get mainly mint and menthol. Interesting range of flavours on this one. Due the the flavour profile its quite easy to sip. What drops the score is that its just not for my palate
Review by Martin Spooner
On the nose a nice fruity apricot story. Not too intense. On the palate a knockout for me. Very nice fruity peaches. Also stays very nicely long on the palate. My secret favorite distillery by now.
Review by ThreeH
Review by Nivius
Besides the inflationarily high number of releases that nobody needs, CDI really did something awesome here. The Armagnac cask is so dominant that you could confuse both the nose and the palate with a real Armagnac, if it weren't for those dark-fruity-floral aromas in the medium-long but intense finish that I had with all New Groves I've tried so far. Also, you really have to be careful not to like this rum too much. Since it was available partly under 70 bucks, it's a real price-performance killer.
Review by Wernie
My first Grays, so completely unbiased about this ;-) Great interplay of fruity, spicy and woody notes on the nose. No idea how it would smell without the finish, but here it fits really well. A nice sweetness from first contact to finish, interspersed with peach, menthol and then spicy woody aromas, I like it very much and it makes me want more. Quite easy to drink as well.
Review by Alex Kunath
Next Bottlekill...Also very tasty...the finish comes through nicely on the nose. On the tongue fruity tart.
Review by Schorgelorsch
Leckerer Vertreter seiner Art. Angenehme Minznoten
Review by Lot-NAS
It is a really nice dram but I think that I prefer my Armagnacs and Rums to be in separated glasses.
Review by xasmx
Reminds me of the 2001-2003 TDLs. A very nice rum, but doesn't quite rise to the level of the best TDLs. The mouthfeel is kind of thin for my taste and does not have the dirty industrial notes of the TDLs.

Is in no way inferior to his younger sister. Also top PLV!

Typical peach from New Grove. The Armagnac finish gives a lot of power and depth. For 53% still very intense and long-lasting. Definitely a great value for money winner!

Fantastic aromas, a bit complex. A fresh fruitiness with apricot and peach. Peppery vanilla and wood. The taste is also complexly peppery, fruity, mint, wood and a bit of cinnamon in the background. Very tasty! Long and nice aftertaste. ———————— After a second tasting, I raise it a bit. It's very good! From 8.2 to 8.5.
