More than one taster called this a "coup de cœur" — and the reason is that menthol note. Eucalyptus, mint and cough-drop cherry lead, with grapefruit and bitter orange underneath and a solvent, glue-like nose that hides where it's from. Cask strength and a little sharp-edged, drying and astringent, but genuinely different. Many rate it a favorite Mauritius bottle.

Very convincing Mauritius rum and for me a clear reference for this origin. On the nose, ripe tropical fruit, grape, vanilla, and a clean wood spice, noticeably more focused than many other bottlings. On the palate, dense and balanced with sweet fruit, spice, a bit of honey, and a fine, elegant structure. Everything feels precise and harmonious without being overloaded. A bottling that shows how good Mauritius can be when balance and maturity come together.

Note: Employment at Perola GmbH (spirits industry), partial professional involvement in bottlings reviewed. All reviews are my personal, unpaid opinion. Awesome stuff. Very powerful and intense, the cognac cask is not too dominant at any point, but it does make the whole thing very dry, furry, and astringent. The intense bitter notes of grapefruit peel, bitter orange, eucalyptus tea, menthol mouthwash, and a slight sour cherry throat lozenge are simply amazing and extraordinary. Very unusual mouthfeel! Definitely my personal benchmark rum when it comes to Mauritius in general and the Grays distillery! However, the 2-year-old Armagnac barrel is a little more "relaxed" to drink in direct comparison.

An absolutely positive surprise, something really happens here in the glass. A very nice fresh minty note, dark fruit, a little boisterous alcohol at the back. Nevertheless, there is very little comparable quality at this price level.

I do not know so many rums from Grays, but I would call this one rather atypical. I had this rum as a blind sample and have typed on tdl vintage 2001-2003 because of the mint note. Usually Grays has more of an orange note. Therefore somewhat atypical, but in any case very good and exciting.

Edit: found a little bit left and tasted it again. Really nice menthol-cherry notes that I didn’t notice so clearly the first time. Compared to the New Grove I tasted before, this is a huge step up. Much bolder and more complex.

For me, one of my favorite purchases this year. The price-performance ratio is really very good here and I really like the flavor profile. I much prefer this to its sister bottling with Armagnac-Fisnish. Update: The last dram still tasted wonderful. The great combination of menthol, fruit and wood maturity still works long after opening

What, only 11 years in the barrel? Would have held the R(h)um blind for significantly older. Therefore, good example of the fact that for the quality / taste / character fermentation may well be more decisive than the storage time, as I could learn in a Velier tasting at the 11th GRF (although only in an aside😉). Surprisingly deep and heavy and very adult on the palate, while the nose is quite restrained. A powerful lad that carries the fur inside. Reminds me distantly of a Savanna.Still runs under the radar, clear recommendation.

Immediately red fruits, sour cherry, and hardly any woodiness or toastiness on the nose. I like it a lot already! I can definitely taste the influence of the barrel on the palate. It results in a beautiful blend of fruit, barrel, mint, and eucalyptus—great! The long finish is very consistent with the impressions on the nose and palate. A very good rum, but also anything but a daily sipper — quite sharp with some rough edges.

Awesome! Incredible value for money. Grays keeps surprising me! We’re right in the TDL universe: powerful red fruit like blackcurrant and a little bitter black cherry. A dark and dirty side. And a superb menthol/eucalyptus freshness. A cognac cask that ties it all together and rounds it out. My rating might seem a bit high, but this rum deserves it given its price and I really like it!

A really excellent rum. Very, very minty on the nose, also eucalyptus and herbs. On the palate, mint dominates. Besides eucalyptus and menthol, you can also detect some sour cherry.

Nose first full-on glue, solvent, paste. Then also vanilla and something fruity like grapefruit/cherry? On the palate first mild, cherry is clearly noticeable, becoming stronger, nice bitter notes, probably from the wood, minty, spicy with a long finish. Very very drinkable!

Again here great aromas, the nose with plenty of solvents doesn't initially hint where we come from. On the palate then more on the bitter side with bitter-sour notes with orange and a portion of grapefruit. Compared to the Armagnac Finish somewhat more complex but less rounded. Matter of taste or daily form what one prefers here. Simply great quality.

A real favorite. This CDI is really well done. The woody taste disappears quite quickly to give way to a very pleasant menthol freshness that lingers in the mouth for a long time. Notes of juicy peaches make the tasting even better. I loved it all the more because the price remains very affordable.

Although the nose is a bit weak, the palate really kicks in: very intense floral notes, sour citrus fruits, menthol. Unfortunately, I miss the rounding notes especially in the finish; it's just too earthy and floral for me.

Nice nose, interesting mix of solvent-menthol and tea-eucalyptus root. On the second whiff then grapefruit as lead singer with a light band accompaniment of tropical fruits. On the palate the positively musty notes and malt/leather dominate. Maybe it's the day's form, but I find it quite sharp.

A nice, heavy fruit/mint scent goes straight to the nose. In the mouth, the full flavor diversity unfolds. Foreground is cherry, menthol and cognac, on the second sip a slightly woody grapefruit-mint aroma appears. Really multifaceted and unusual.

I can agree with the impressions: Freshness (menthol, eucalyptus) paired with a nice fruitiness (cherry) as well as spiciness and a slightly astringent finish. Quite interesting, although I'm still not fully convinced by rums with a Cognac finish.

Grays has a distintive trait, that somehow recalls a rum from another area, the TDL distilled more or less in the same period. Less fruitiy than 2009, and a bit more bitter, this rum is still really enjoyable and does have a nice complexity.

Tasted together with two other Grays from Mauritius (RX12864 and RX25094). Dark amber color. On the nose, the most restrained compared to the three samples. There are also spicy/woody aromas accompanied by a fresh menthol note, but clearly much more subtle. The palate impression is then noticeably better. A spicy woody simply delicious combination that, over time in the glass, also develops a slight sweetness balancing the light roastiness. A medium-long finish on the palate flavors. If the nose had been more intense, it would have won with me. So it ended up in third place by a small margin among the three tasted bottles.

That was a nice surprise, the Cognac works pretty well in combination and makes it overall a really nice dram. Could also be a Rum-finished Cognac, you never know (ha!). Oh and in direct comparison with the Armagnac finish (RX12864) I prefer this one. The Cognac is not that edgy and also feels a little more complex.

Perfect condition to taste this rum, a June sunset. Beautiful color, menthol on the nose and palate. Alcohol well integrated, the 57° goes down well. Very good, I never get tired of it.

A New Grove with its classic markers, mint, peach, spices, cognac cask. The palate changes everything, compared to the classic releases, these extra degrees give much more intensity and a certain lightness despite these rather heavy aromas. Note a slight bitterness for a rather dry finish. Great value for money.

The nose already reveals a strikingly fresh mint note, accompanied by fruity nuances - unusual and fascinating. The palate is then really strong: eucalyptus, mint and menthol dominate the taste without being artificial. The finish is long, cooling and pleasantly mentholated, leaving a lasting impression. For the price, this is an absolutely brilliant rum with recognition value.

Apricot and caramel. Creme brulee. Some lime. I get the menthol in thr taste. Oak and cherry tang on the finish. Maybe a little roasty. Quite complex and pleasant. Dark golden pour. Maybe pepper. Sample shared thanks to xamsx.
