Here's the twist: at 50.6% this Guadeloupe agricole barely feels like it. The nose is the best part — caramelised dried fruit, cinnamon, a little chocolate and papaya freshness. Then several tasters hit the same wall: the palate turns thin and watery, with a citric acidity and a short finish that feels light for 14 years in the cask.

Have had this 14yo Montebello from the Carrere distillery for a while and now it was time to test it. The Carrere distillery is quite young. They started up 1930 and from 1966 it has been operated by the Marsolle family. It’s vintage 2000 bottled 2015 at ABV 50,6%. There’s just 1250 bottles blended from four different ex bourbon casks. It’s extremely elegant and smooth and it’s actually quite hard to understand that the ABV is 50,6%. To feel the elegance of this rum it’s in my opinion important to keep it for a while in your mouth before you swallow.

Unfortunately, with a steadily declining level from nose to palate. What starts really appealing smell leads to a thin, watered-down taste film of fruit acid and toasty spicy notes on the tongue, which can hardly entice me to take more sips. Unfortunately, a really weak representative of Montebello.

The nose is very tasty, with lime, honey, typical agricole notes. The palate is rather disappointing, thin, unpleasantly sour and the first impression somehow salty. I expected much more from this one.

After buying the 10 year old I had to try this one as well. It's fresh and the Agricole notes are there as well. A well rounded yet light rum in the flavour profile. Fruity with spices and a hint of nougat on the palate. There is also a light bitterness on first contact with the palate but it subsides with the following sips. In my opinion the 10 year old is better balanced than this one.

Montebello 2000 – 50.6% Historic family distillery on the east coast of Basse-Terre, Montebello produces its agricole rums with a column still. This 2000 vintage, bottled in 2015, aged 14 years under the tropical climate of Guadeloupe, in the house's traditional containers. A total of 1,250 bottles were produced at 50.6%, from the blend of 4 ex-bourbon barrels. Interesting nose on caramelized and roasted dried fruits, but a palate too discreet, a bit too restrained for my taste.

The nose is quite light with a nice woodiness and beautiful freshness. The fruits are also present. On the palate I find it a bit watery, which is a pity! There is a certain acidity that also bothers me! A nice freshness remains on the quite pleasant finish.

A very promising nose, very gourmand and fruity, a very withdrawn palate, a slightly acidic soapy side, a bit watery too, and a really short finish, especially considering its 14 years. I expected much more, disappointed...
