Longueteau Papillon Blanc
Ti punch drinkers and anyone who likes a fresh, grassy white agricole will feel at home here. It leads with sweet cut cane and a light floral, citrus lift, then turns peppery and quite hot at 53%. Several tasters found it a strong-value everyday blanc; one called it one of the best-value white agricoles around. A couple noted it runs a touch bitter or metallic.

#5106 13.02.2025 Running some samples at home while relaxing on the final days of my vacation. Nose Round, balanced, fresh, light floral, sugarcane, light citrus, light olive, mineral. Palate Round, light oily, light citrus, light olive, faint salt, mineral, floral, light herbal, sugarcane. Finish Balanced, light oily, fruits, olive, light salt, mineral, light floral, sugarcane. Empty glass Sugarcane, light floral, light cumin, lemon. The flavours spread as soon as you start pouring this rum into the glass.

I’ve built my own calendar with samples from Rhum Attitude. In slot #1 I had the Papillon Blanc from Guadeloupe named after the islands nickname. It’s an Agricole from the Esperance distillery owned by François Longueteau. The distillery also produces the brands Longueteau and Karukera. It’s distilled in a Creole column and is a blend of 70% blue cane, 20% red cane and 10% yellow cane at ABV 53%. A very good start for the calendar.

Sugarcane, citrus fruits, pepper, and floral notes clearly dominate and give it the typical Agricole character. It feels authentic and natural but could have a bit more depth and length. Overall, it is a successful, uncomplicated representative of its kind.

La Route des Rhums Advent calendar 2022 No. 5. Again an unaged Agricole. But I don't like it that much. Nose as usual tropical fruits and Agricole. On the palate then quite alcoholic. Also sugarcane comes through. But I find it too bitter for a better rating.

Extra nose (fresh and sweet cane), palate a bit livelier with a peppery touch. For me, one of the best quality/price ratios among white agricoles. Works very well in ti punch, even neat with a little lime zest.

Nice discovery this Papillon! The nose is very aromatic, fresh cane, really pleasant, with a charming spiciness. The palate is also pleasant despite a metallic side and the alcohol is slightly burning. The finish is average.

Very good white, a surprise for an entry-level and a nice bottle. Fresh cane nose. Soft palate then strong alcohol well integrated. Good length in the mouth.

Nose: Way too “new make-y”. Lots of boiled leek. Dijon mustard and white vinegar; vinaigrette (?), boiled artichoke. A bit of zesty lemon. Grappa. Grape seed. Spoiled green grape. Slightly yogurty side. Banana leaves. Way too vegetal, boiled vegetables here. Boiled corn!! Very sulfurous. Maybe egg yolk. I didn’t quite know how to handle so much sulfur. It calms down a bit over time but unbalanced. 75 Palate: Starts better as sulfur fades to the background. That rotten hazelnut and pistachio note I got before from Longueteau. Lively and obvious vegetal character; lemon balm extract again. Those steamed banana leaves from the nose are still here. Low sweetness. Alcohol well integrated. Some citrus and green plum pickle. Light yellow fruit; maybe via lacto-fermented apricot. Leafiness. Slight bay leaf maybe. Cooked yellow plums. Much better than the nose. 81 Finish: Here light black pepper, some banana and indistinguishable but reminiscent of red berries notes. Cooked leek and boiled corn keep sulfur here but a bit in the background. Alcohol fruitiness over time. Aeration helps. Young banana. Again salty green plum. Slight lactic undertone, maybe margarine. Very light green olive. Medium-plus intensity. Medium length finish. 81 Overall impression: I’m not surprised people enjoy it as ti’ punch; on its own it has glaring flaws (sulfur!). Not shallow or empty but not quite “ready” enough. 78 Total: 79 Price performance: Medium-good, medium (especially if not considered as a final product) Would I buy again?: I don’t think so.

Whoa, this one is powerful! That was my reaction tasting it neat. A good floral scent comes from the bottle and on the taste, cane and chili/pepper fill the throat, you immediately feel it's 52 degrees. However, I liked it more neat than in a ti punch. Up to you to judge but this rum is a must-have in your collection.
