More than one taster swears there's Caroni hiding in here — this 1991 TDL leans dirtier and more tarry than the usual mellow Trinidad style. Expect oak, tar, tobacco and a little coconut, with tropical fruit and a dry, dark-chocolate edge. The nose wins people over; a few feel the palate can't quite keep up. At 64.5% the alcohol sits surprisingly well-integrated.

Steffen's book has already reported in detail on the proximity between TDL and Caroni. Aromatically, I also find typical HTR notes here and therefore consider a blend of TDL and Caroni to be probable. I like it very much, in view of the general data (ageing, flavor profile) it is definitely a PLV tip for me - today, far less balanced official Caroni releases cost considerably more. In direct comparison to other Caronis of the higher category, it is of course somewhat behind, but for the second series it is a very appealing release.

nose: it's shy, with a bit of furniture wax. Surprisingly fresh, I find it dense in alcohol and it really stings the mucous membranes. You can hardly perceive some fragrances of orange, chocolate, peach if you look closely. It's also floral, with a very slight coconut sweetness that reminds me of Foursquare. Meh... 🙄 Disappointing... On the palate: a very slight menthol reminds us of the Angostura distillery and its particular markers. There's a certain sweetness, with yellow fruits (peach). You feel the alcohol but everything is dull, dissipated, volatile. finish: alcoholic, slight hydrocarbons, all the aromas are dissipated, and a bit of menthol remains but too light.

This is not a cheap rum but we'll worth the present price tag. A nicely balanced rum with a light dry touch to the palate. I may have to add a bottle to my collection. A very old lady indeed and a good one.

08-11-2025 - Rate 9.1 Have had this one on the radar for some time. Enjoyed many different TDL’s this year and this is one of the better once. Nose is oak, tar, spice and a hint of coconut. Palate is close to the smell with a hint of dried fruits and pepper. Medium finish dominated by tar and oak. 19-07-2026 - Rate 9.0

Relatively dirty and slightly reminiscent of caroni. In addition, unusually little wood for a 31y old rum. Very mild and balanced, almost palatable! Alcohol perfectly integrated. Delicious! But not necessarily worth 400€+. Nevertheless, probably the best really old "TDL" I've tasted to date. I wouldn't be surprised if a few sips of Caroni had gone in here! 😃

Tasted 2 years ago, as a sample, I had overrated it. With hindsight and all the TDLs tasted since, especially the 2000-2001-02-03-08-09, these 1991 vintages are often quite light, soft with a lack of aroma concentration. A relative complexity thanks to the years of aging balanced by light olfactory markers. Final rating to come.

Trinidad yes, but it doesn't taste like "pure" TDL. The typical TDL markers with mint and peach stay strongly in the background. Instead, it shows some dirty Caroni markers. I need to get some similarly aged TDLs sometime.

Amazing! The 91 TDLs I know were rather boring so far and went in the direction of Foursquare. This one is a mix of a Caroni and a Foursquare. Definitely exciting!

Excellent t.d.l., with an indulgent nose of caramel, vanilla and chocolate mixed with a touch of shoe polish and leather. On the palate, it's just as delicious, with a nice dryness on the tongue, and tropical fruits are also present. Dark chocolate mixed with a wilder side gives this juice a very interesting profile. You could stay for hours. Very long finish.

Tasted at the UK RumFest, and not a fully in depth tasting - overall impressions were of coconut, vanilla and oak. The Famille Ricci stand had lots of great rums on offer and guys were very friendly.
