Matusalem Gran Reserva 15 Años
Opinions land all over the place here: plenty call it a friendly first rum, others find it thin, a bit hot for 40%, or just plain average. What most agree on is the profile — vanilla, caramel, a little wood and honey, light body, short finish. Some taste a bourbon-like or brandy edge and a touch of bitterness. Easy Dominican/Cuban-style sipping, nothing complicated.

This was one of the first aged rum I tasted and definitely the first Cuban styled. So now many years after I’m quite sure that that affected my rating. Have to get it a second chance if I run into it.

Solid discount store rum.

6,8:On the nose, there is a basic similarity to his younger brother-10y.We have strong, almost Madagascar vanilla, viscose butter and certainly some nice, smooth caramel and a very light coffee note.Airing brings more concentrated vanilla/caramel dimension, with toasted coconut and wood and sweet spices. In comparison to his younger brother, this rum is more smooth and rounded. 7,5:On the palate, it is only slightly sweet, characterized mainly by a caramel aroma, vanilla, spice, some fruitiness-peach and subtle hints of wood.Let s not forget buttery notes of creme brulee, tiramisu. There is no alcohol burn, except maybe for rum beginners. 7:The moderately long finish again features caramel, vanilla and is smooth..

Thus rum originates from Cuba but destilled and matured in the Domenican Republic today, following the old Cuban methods to the point. Beginners may want to add an icecube when enjoying this rum. It is a rum in the cheap end so don't expect too much 😊

An absolute evergreen for me. Available almost everywhere and always at a very good price. I don't share the sometimes poor ratings here (<6). With only 5 grams of sugar (ALKO) added, in this price range, much more honest and likeable than other sugar water. I stick to it: Perfect for beginners or easy sippers.

Smells much better than it tastes. The caramel smell does not arrive on the tongue

Not bad catch for beginners it this price category

You can find Matusalem in every bigger supermarket, that's why it was also one of my very first rums ever. After years, I'm coming back to it to see how it tastes today. On the nose, the holy trinity: vanilla, caramel, wood, and the alcohol is also clearly noticeable on the nose. On the palate, a similar game: lots of vanilla and caramel, and despite only 40%, the alcohol is noticeable. For the price, there are better ones, whether you're a beginner or not.

Bcp trop classique et sucré En resume, mes notes de degutation : Au nez : Caramel En bouche : Caramel, Vanillé La finale plutot orientee vers : Caramel. J'ai remonté la note car c'éait un peu méchant mais bon...

Nose: Alcohol and wood along with spicy notes. Taste: Semi-sweet, taste of burnt sugar with bitter finish. You can mostly taste the wood with candied fruit and vanilla although the taste is not intense and rather seems diluted. Finish: Very short. Overall I am not impressed and can think of dozen rums in this price tag which are much better in terms of value against what you get for your money.
Review by Jakob Deiner
That's basically what I'm looking for - both in the nose and taste, purely the "classic" rum aromas of distinct vanilla, some caramel, and oak. Mild, creamy, sweet, but not over the top, still definitely a real rum. Super! Drinks: - Neat: 4.5/5 - Rum Cola: 4/5 - Rum Punch: 4.5/5

I think this is a good entry into rum. It is cheap and easy to drink, though the taste is not that prominent. I found the nose to be very cocoa-like and sweet and I got notes of cocoa, oak and molasses
Review by Fabrice Rouanet
Easy-to-drink rum, with aromas of honey, caramel and vanilla. Nothing complicated but does the job without great richness or aromatic intensity. The finish is short but not unpleasant, with the aromas from the nose and palate.

Edit: Yes, you have to admit it, you can't deny the initial sin of tasting every rum. Possibly still suitable as a beginner's rum if you're more into the sweet stuff. Again, a little too sweet and artificial as a mixer. Just a sweet rum
Review by Arya_NBV
Sipping rum. Got it as a gift. Special story, not a special rum. I'll enjoy drinking the bottle, remember the story behind the gift, and that's it...

Great in mixing
Review by ilRummista
A rum for newbies, with caramel notes, quite sweet but with an alcoholic aftertaste. The quality-price ratio definitely plays in its favor among supermarket rums.
Review by RumTaTa
Unbearably sweet! There it makes me no fun to sniff and taste more precisely.
Review by Business Liner Ralf
Elegant blend, wonderfully balanced, fine vanilla and little butterscotch. Actually too good for mixing with cola. Now at Christmas time, great with vanilla crescent cookies.
Review by Ondřej Koller
Vanillish, quite dry, but nice
Review by Heffernan
For evenings when you need something "soft". Drunk neat, a relatively mild and smooth rum, light vanilla, just round. One of my favorites. Comparable to its Dominican brother Ron Barcelo Imperial Dominicano. Can only recommend.
Review by Gerbes
One of my favourite rum in lower price range. Very well balanced. Suitable for casual drinking and as premium topping for cocktails.
Review by Thunderbird
An everyday rum that's good to drink neat or mixed! It's not particularly complex, rather one-dimensional in taste!
Review by Rafael Gonzalez
Not my favorite rum.i dont know if it influenced in anything but i just opened a bottle i had stored from back 2013 and the cork snapped.i had to strain the rum to remove the left over cork over fear that it might affect the taste.
Review by AustrianOak
Sweet, light, very vanilla.
Review by Adam Rajchert
Po prostu przyjemny do picia. Zapach: skórka jabłka, banany, melon lub słodka dynia, wanilia, butterscotch, trzcina, cytrusy Smak: banany, karmel, wanilia, rodzynki, pomarańcze, limonki, melon, brązowy cukier, trzcina, czekolada, orzechy, miód Finisz: słodki, czekoladowy
Review by Maris
Its a combination of bitter and sweet. I know its a sin for 15y old rum to mix it with cola, but I just love this combination. I really really really like it cube libre style.

Noch ein wenig zurückhaltend an der Nase, weiß er am Gaumen zu gefallen. Bei dem Preis sicherlich außergewöhnlich, weshalb man mit einem Kauf wenig falsch machen kann, wenn man Süßrums mag.
Review by Wynton Mangakahia
I think it's a little too light in body. A little drier than I was expecting with a distinct okay flavour with even bourbonesque after-taste.
Review by Rene B
Actually an entry-level rum. But not everyone likes this alcoholic & slightly peppery taste in the mouth / on the finish. Somehow UNBALANCED.
Review by Hordamer Mendelbaum
Honey, caramel. Menthol. Mellows nicely on rocks
Review by Pedro Jnv
Quietly average, the advantage is it is not too sweetened.
Review by Sebastiaan Linssen
Pleasant rum for its price.

Sharp but full flavor
Review by alexbool
Pretty nice. It is more delicate on the nose than your typical Dominican rum with more spices and nuances. On the palate it is mild and balances light caramelly and woody notes with just enough sweetness. I like how it is a very balanced and mild rum.
Review by mph1lly
I thought this rum is okay as a Latin style. Caramel and prune come to the forefront for me and I also immediately got an acidic kick. But the long after taste is dessert-like caramel and warm. Simple non complex rum.
Review by Tobi tobi
The best rum in this price range.
Review by frseec
A good rum for beginners. The smell is sharp and sweet. On the palate it is very light. It stands out through sweetness, sharpness and a woody profile. Because of its lightness it is pleasant to drink.

Read full review ›Rum without added sugar with a simple flavor profile of vanilla, chocolate and cocoa, which is not a problem to drink in the evening in front of the TV or with friends at a party. If you're a rum fan and haven't had a Matusalem buying Gran Reserva 15yo won't hurt your wallet.

Read full review ›If you're fans of cask strength rums around 60% with esters from Jamaica or Barbados, this probably isn't for you. But for others, it will find its place. Matusalem is a pleasant, smooth rum in the Dominican style, perfect for a nice evening with friends, even if your friends aren't rum experts. A nice bottle at a reasonable price of 690 CZK.

Read full review ›The rum doesn't burst with tropical fruit. Its a light smooth easy drinking rum with hints of vanilla and a smokiness in the profile. All in all a good rum at a good price. It doesn't offer any surprises but for any lover of Cuban/Dominican style rums this is sure...
