Here's the twist: the nose reads like a proper Mauritian rum — nutty oak, dried fruit, a bit of peach and tropical fruit — but on the palate the peated whisky cask takes over. Smoke, big tannins, earth and a dry, roasted finish push the original rum into the background. Several tasters felt the whisky "renversé la table" and buried the rum's identity.

Tasted again. Okay, on the nose it's a rum, quite woody and nutty, a bit like an old Clemente. On the palate, the whisky overturns the table, big tannins, a little cereal, light smoke. The wood is very present, but it's a success.

Just an hint of usual new grove loads of tropical fruits, and a layer earthy and dirty due to the finish, but the latter doesn't improve much the drinking experience

#4954 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Light wood, faint roasted, fruity, light caramel, dried fruit, faint coffee. Palate Oily, round, light wood, light coffee, light nutts, dried fruit, faint orange, spice, faint peat. Finish Medium long, light wood, light roasted, dried fruit, light nutts, spice, faint peat.

Tested at RhumFest Paris 2025. I like more and more what New Grove does but I am not thrilled by this finish in French whisky cask. I find that the original rum's typicity loses a lot. You keep very pleasant yellow fruit but the whisky takes over. Pleasant despite that but surely not necessary.

New Grove tried several whisky cask finishes, but you can't say this one is the most accomplished. The nose is influenced by Rozelieures with its smoky and peaty side but remains balanced thanks to spices, caramel, dried fruits, and peach that remind us of the rum's identity. The nose is pleasant and shows good aromatic integration. Then comes the palate, and that's day and night. The palate is completely crushed by the whisky which leaves little room for the rest. The smoky, woody, and peaty side dominates and totally unbalances the profile. The alcoholic side highlights a somewhat imperfect integration on the palate as well. It might please a whisky lover, but not a rum lover. The finish, quite long, is exactly in the same register, the woody and peaty notes take over in a dry and rough finish where the rum has definitely faded away. Of the three finishes offered by New Grove, this one is for me the least convincing, the profile being totally unbalanced and having lost its identity.
